PORTLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE, Portland, Oregon Instructor, 1997 to 1998 Taught medical-surgical nursing theory and skills to second-year nursing students. Class content included, but not limited to: Fluid and electrolytes, acute cardiac health problems, urinary system health problems, resume writing, interviewing, legal aspects and preparing for the NCLEX. Clinical practicum: 16 hours/week in sub-acute care setting (Fall and Winter Terms) and coordinated preceptorship experience for student clinical practicum (Spring Term). Initiated a new clinical experience where student teams provided nursing care for a group of clients. Students functioned in roles of nurse manager, medication-treatment nurse and care giver. Very positive student response to this management-focused clinical experience. Academic advisor for ten students. Instructor, Taught medical-surgical nursing theory and skills to first-year students. Classroom content included: Nursing theories and conceptual frameworks; homeostasis; nursing process; health promotion throughout the life cycle; stress and illness; legal aspects; drug properties, classification and actions; cardiac assessment; respiratory assessment; sensory assessment; sleep assessment; chronic cardiac problems (congestive heart failure, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease); fluid and electrolytes; documentation. Clinical practicum: 10 hours/week in the following setting: long-term care and acute-care medical-surgical units. Academic advisor for students. 3

4 Participated in Student Success Program - activities promoting success of ethnic minority students. First Year Coordinator, Planned and coordinated required orientation day for first-year students and their families. Coordinated academic scheduling (classroom, lab and clinical) for class of 85 first-year nursing students. Coordinated faculty planning for the three nursing courses taught in first year of nursing program. Facilitated integration of community-based learning experience for students in all first year nursing courses. Classroom content: fluid and electrolytes, respiratory (COPD), cardiac (congestive heart failure, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease). Nursing skills: physical assessment, IVS and IV medication administration, respiratory support, and urinary catheterization. Clinical practicum: 12 hours/week in the following settings: rehabilitation (3 weeks), acute care - medical-surgical units (12 weeks). Taught in a professional issues course.
