2 Lands Of Fire & Ice Welcome to our South America brochure, spanning the continents from vibrant Mexico in the north to Tierra del Fuego in the south, as well as the remote Falkland Islands and Antarctica. This dynamic region brims with inspirational experiences of all kinds. History comes alive in the cities and towns with their flamboyant colonial buildings, their rich heritage of art, dance and music, and the remarkable remains of ancient Aztec, Incan and other Pre-Columbian cultures. This continent of fire and ice is home to towering volcanoes and breathtaking icefields. Landscapes vary from steaming Amazonian rainforest to the driest desert in the world; all inhabited by strange and diverse creatures. Wildlife lovers will be amazed by the exotic birds and monkeys of the Amazon, the large mammals like jaguar and giant anteaters in the Pantanal, and the unique fauna of the Galapagos. This year we have added another iconic Latin country to our program - Mexico - whose ancient history is visible in towering Mayan pyramids hidden in the jungle, and lavishly decorated tombs and temples. Due to the size of the continent we highly recommend a stay of 3 weeks, visiting just 2 or 3 countries. We offer a range of wonderful boutique city hotels, country hotels, haciendas and eco-lodges to choose from. Our packages are designed to be taken on a private basis for two people and our experienced consultants can tailor-make the perfect itinerary for you. 4 Choosing A Tour To Suit You! We are specialists in tailor-made tours and we believe we're the best at what we do. Our aim is to create authentic experiences, not just an itinerary, and all our tours are custom designed to suit you. With 30 years of operation behind us, we believe our experience is unmatched and we are well qualified to share our expertise with our clients. Deciding on where to travel, when to go, and choosing the right tour to suit your style and budget, requires expert planning and advice. Slowing down the itinerary, staying longer in certain special places, and choosing well-located properties, all enhance the overall experience. Our travel consultants have a wealth of knowledge and are well qualified to advise you. A Questions to Ask successful itinerary needs your involvement. The more we know about what you want from your visit the easier it will be to help you design your perfect holiday. Here are some of the key questions to consider: Do you have a preference for a particular region for example Patagonia, Galapagos, the Andes or the Amazon Rainforest? What time of year do you wish to travel? How much time do you have available? How many people are travelling (any children)? Do you have any particular interests eg. wildlife, adventure activities, history? Do you have an approximate budget? Are you planning to travel anywhere else during this holiday? Do you prefer a particular style of travel eg. five-star, adventure camping, cruising or a combination? Would you consider paying more for a high-end experience and extra amenities eg. private tour guide, luxury accommodation, select small group experiences? For assistance please call our experienced consultants on (03) or or contact your travel agent. Hotel Salto Chico explora City & Town Hotels South America has many world class hotels, as well as fine boutique hotels and plenty of good 3 and 4 star accommodation. 5 Accommodation & Style of Tours Amazon River Cruises Explore the Amazon River and its tributaries on a riverboat cruise from Iquitos in Peru or Manaus in Brazil. Boats offer comfortable or luxury accommodation, air conditioning and good food. Naturalist guides will accompany you on shore excursions to see wildlife or visits to Indian villages. Aqua Amazon Aqua Expeditions Country Hotels, Hosterias & Posadas Country hotels and inns may also be called lodges, hosteria or posada (pousada in Brazil) and the style of accommodation varies a great deal. Some offer boutique accommodation and gourmet meals, whilst others are simple inns. Activities may include guided visits to scenic, cultural or archaeological sites, nature walks, horseriding, etc. Galapagos Cruises The best way to see the Galapagos Islands is by boat. Our chosen ships range from luxury category to first class or superior tourist standard. Select from one of the larger cruise ships which accommodate 40 to 100 passengers, or choose a more personalised cruise on a motor yacht or catamaran, which take from 8 to 48 passengers. with expert naturalist guides. Patagonia Cruises Patagonia is famous for its mountains, glaciers, lakes, fjords and marine wildlife. Explore on a small ship cruise through the waterways of Tierra del Fuego in southern Chile, on board the Stella, Via Australis or the M/V Skorpios. Or further north in the famous Lakes District embark on the Crossing of the Lakes, travelling by boat and bus between Chile and Argentina. Hotel Eolo Eurotur M/C Cormorant Haugan Cruises M/V Scorpios III Australis Fazendas, Haciendas & Estancias The grand colonial estates and cattle ranches created in the 18th and 19th centuries are called Haciendas or Estancias (Chile and Argentina) or Fazendas (Brazil). Some are grand historic houses, whilst others are rambling ranch houses. Some showcase the traditional life of ranchers and cowboys (gaucho) on the grasslands, or offer activities such as horseriding, hiking and birdwatching. Others are more like gourmet retreats. Fazendas in Brazil s Pantanal offer stunning wildlife viewing and excursions in the beautiful wetlands. Wilderness Tours/Hiking South America's spectacular wilderness areas are perfect for exploring on foot, whether on an easy hike or a week long trek. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru is the most famous trek, but there are other great trekking routes in this area as well. Patagonia is renowned for hiking and horseriding, particularly Chile's Torres del Paine National Park and Argentina's Los Glaciares National Park. Another region with exciting outdoor adventures is the Atacama Desert in Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. Accommodation can be in tents, hosterias or luxury lodges. HistorY and CulturE South America has many fascinating archaeological and historical sites from ancient pre-columbian remains to impressive Inca and Mayan ruins, particularly in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, northern Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Guatemala. See extravagant Spanish or Portuguese colonial architecture, such as in Cusco or Arequipa in Peru, Quito in Ecuador, Cartagena in Colombia or Salta in Argentina. Much of the indigenous culture remains alive in the small towns with their festivals, markets and traditional arts and crafts. 6 The endangered Golden Lion Tamarin Luciano Candisani Blue-footed Booby, Galapagos Shutterstock Conservation As a specialist tour company focusing on the wildlife and wilderness of South America, Antarctica, the Arctic, Africa, Bhutan, Canada & Alaska and India, Natural Focus Safaris is committed to helping preserve the natural environment. Over the years we have made significant contributions to conservation societies and research projects in the destinations we visit through our policy of giving clients the opportunity to contribute $8 (or more) per person which we then match dollar for dollar. We don't charge an administration fee so 100% of contributions goes to the nominated conservation project. Featured here are some of the projects we and our clients have contributed to. GOLDEN TAMARIN CONSERVATION Just a few decades ago the squirrel-sized Golden Lion Tamarin monkey was critically endangered and reduced to a mere 200 animals in the wild. A conservation effort was begun to save the tamarin with a breeding program and initiatives to preserve their habitat in the Atlantic coastal rainforests of south-eastern Brazil. Their number has now rebounded to about 1600 and the Golden Lion Tamarin is an international symbol of success in conservation. If you would like to visit the tamarins please see our tour on page 77. GALAPAGOS CONSERVANCY The Galapagos Conservancy (GC) is dedicated exclusively to the long-term protection of the Galapagos Islands and works in partnership with the Charles Darwin Foundation and the Galapagos National Park. Its work has resulted in the eradication of donkeys, pigs and goats from many of the islands and the restoration of the eco-system. One of their most recent projects is Project Pinta: Re-tortoising Pinta Island. 9 30 Years Of Safaris In January 2015 Natural Focus Safaris and parent company African Wildlife Safaris celebrated 30 years of operation - organising tours and safaris to Africa and around the world. Since the year 2000 the Natural Focus division has specialised in some of the world's greatest wilderness destinations - South and Central America, Antarctica, Canada, Alaska, the Arctic, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan. The company is still family owned, with the original founders Steve and Sara Cameron continuing to be involved on a daily basis. Our travel consultants also have a wealth of experience, with many having been with us for 15 or more years. 14 Years OF Natural Focus Safaris Natural Focus Safaris was born in the year 2000 as a separate division within African Wildlife Safaris. As the name suggests our intention was to focus on the natural world in areas other than Africa - with the first tours being tiger tracking in India and bear viewing in Canada and Alaska. Exciting Antarctic voyages, Galapagos cruises, and the Amazon rainforest followed soon afterwards. Today the NFS brand covers a fabulous range of holidays to 9 magnificent destinations, each with its own full colour brochure. Wildlife and wilderness will always be an important part of our company ethos, but we also offer cultural experiences, archaeological sites, cruises, train journeys and even wine tours. Testimonials Don't just take our word for it. Here is what some of our clients have to say: "We had a wonderful holiday and everything went smoothly. There is so much to see in South America and we only scratched the surface. Spending time with our daughter was, of course, an added bonus. All the accommodation was lovely and everything went as per itinerary. Patagonia in winter was like a wonderland - so beautiful. We trekked through the snow and there was plenty to see and do even in winter. There were so few other tourists at the time which made it even better. Thanks for all your assistance in planning our holiday." James & Vicki Sykes, QLD "Just a quick note to tell you we returned from our trip to South American last night after an outstanding 3 week holiday. We had no problems with flights, accommodation, guides or anything else for that matter. Everything went to plan and Wendy and I had a fantastic time. Thank you for all your great work in putting the trip together, great planning results in great trips and you did it all brilliantly. This was our third big trip with Natural Focus Safaris and we will certainly be using you again. Well done!" David & Wendy Graham, VIC "It is hard to imagine any better experiences than those which we had at Tierra Patagonia, El Casco Hotel in Bariloche and at the Cumbres Hotel in Puerto Varas. Tierra Atacama was a wonderful surprise and we enjoyed the desert, especially the Sala de Tara day trip. The Stella Australis voyage was also a standout and especially as we had good weather for the Cape Horn landing. El Chalten was a big surprise, on the good side. We enjoyed the small hotel, the walks and that unspoilt area of Patagonia. Thanks to Natural Focus Safaris for such a wonderful itinerary."
