4 BUILDINGS - A CLIMATE CHANGE PROBLEM Critical levels of the Earth s capacity are exceeded: More than 40% of energy consumption More than 1/3 of greenhouse gas emissions. 9 THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS CONCERNING SUSTAINABILITY ARE OFTEN TAKEN IN THE EARLY STAGES OF A PROJECT WHERE TO LOCALIZE THE BUILDING? 9 A zero-energy building is not sufficient in itself, one must also consider the location: If transport is needed to get there, high energy usage and emissions can be the result.

11 MAIN OBJECTIVES Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by min. 30% to zero for all new projects 2. Reduce the use of resources, and avoid materials causing health and environmental damages 3. Contribute to environmentally friendly solutions locally Pilot projects - an important instrument. The three main objectives concern all of Statsbygg s activities but with specific targets.

18 MODEL FOR CALCULATING OF LIFE CYCLE GHG- EMISSIONS FOR BUILDINGS is a holistic life-cycle tool, which calculates carbon footprint/ghg-footprint of buildings based on the principle of Life Cycle Analyses (LCA). Calculates life-cycle GHG-emissions linked to: 1. Production of materials used in the building 2. Energy use in the operation phase 3. Transport of people and goods who use the building 4. Energy use and transport during construction phase The tool is developed by Statsbygg and Civitas AS and is available for free.
