1 THE COCA-COLA COMPANY LONDON 2012 SUSTAINABILITY GUIDE FOR SUPPLIERS SUPPORTING OUR SUPPLIERS TO BECOME MORE SUSTAINABLE OUR VISION: The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are an opportunity to deliver both a world-class event and a lasting legacy in terms of sustainability. As a headline sponsor, The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC) is committed to supporting the Organising Committee (LOCOG) to deliver this vision. We aspire to set the benchmark for sustainable events, which other organisations around the world will seek to follow. For TCCC, sustainability is multi-faceted. Environmental stewardship is central, and we aim to enable a zero-waste Games, and to reduce and compensate for greenhouse gas emissions created as a result of activating our sponsorship of London However, being sustainable is about much more than just the environment. At The Coca-Cola Company, it also means promoting health and wellness. These three pillars form the backbone of our Sustainability Policy for London 2012 (which can be read online at and we have set ourselves ambitious objectives for each. In addition, we are implementing the BS 8901, the new British Standard for sustainable event management, with the aim of mapping and mitigating our impacts, and tracking our positive contributions. OUR EXPECTATIONS: As a supplier to our London 2012 operations you are central to our success in delivering our plans sustainably. We want to do business with responsible suppliers; businesses that treat their staff and sub-contractors well; who understand the nature of the products and materials they are supplying and who recognise their responsibility to protect the environment and foster good relations with local communities. This document outlines what we expect of our suppliers according to each of the three pillars of our Sustainability Policy, and highlights resources which can help you to improve the environmental and social impacts of your organisation. When tendering for business with The Coca-Cola System, please be aware that your proposal will be judged, in part, against these credentials. BENEFITS FOR SUPPLIERS: The event industry is changing. Suppliers that show their commitment to sustainability are differentiating themselves and improving their chances of winning new business. Old wasteful and inefficient methods of production are no longer acceptable and consumers of products for the events industry (including TCCC) will no longer tolerate ignorance about sustainability and environment stewardship. It is in both our interests to be leaders in this field.

2 1. ZERO WASTE GAMES We envisage a world without waste, where our empty packaging is viewed as a valuable resource for the future. We are taking giant steps towards reducing the waste produced in our manufacturing processes and in ensuring the recyclability of our packaging. As well as playing our part to encourage recycling inside Games venues, we will seek every opportunity to use and procure materials with recycled and reusable content. We support the use of products that are designed with minimal packaging and which can be reused or recycled. We expect our suppliers to strive to reduce waste by: sourcing raw materials from sustainable sources; maximising the use of recycled content in products; minimising the use of packaging; considering reuse possibilities; and managing waste and resources in the most environmentally responsible way. Our partners at LOCOG have created a series of sustainability codes and guidelines which apply to all supplier and licensees. 3 2. REDUCING AND COMPENSATING FOR CARBON EMISSIONS We are committed to growing our business without increasing our carbon footprint. We are taking substantial measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our activities at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and will compensate for any created. A substantial part of our environmental impact at the London 2012 Olympic Games owes itself to embodied carbon associated with temporary materials and our suppliers production processes. We therefore expect you to minimise the embodied impact of your products and services, and to consider the emissions associated with all your business operations - production, storage, transportation, and ultimately disposal where re-use of materials is not possible post Games. We may need your support in calculating our carbon footprint. In due course we will contact you outlining what information we require. 4 3. PROMOTING HEALTH AND WELLNESS We are strong supporters of London 2012 s pledge to use the inspirational power of sport to get young people active, regardless of their physical ability. We support the national charity StreetGames, which helps young people in disadvantaged communities to get active. We also strive to create a workplace which promotes staff wellbeing. We expect our suppliers to promote the wellbeing of their employees by creating and maintaining a positive health and safety culture. 5 ADDITIONAL SUPPORT Our partners at LOCOG share our values on sustainability and have developed sustainable events guidelines and a comprehensive sustainable sourcing code. These invaluable tools can be found at: BS 8901 AND ISO : We have signed up to a new global standard which supports us to embed sustainability into every aspect of our London 2012 event management: the BS We are currently self-certified and operating our systems to all the requisite standards. In addition to achieving BS 8901 we are committed to achieving ISO , the International Standard for Sustainable Event Management which is due to be published in summer In the future we hope all our suppliers involved in event management will implement this system. The British Standard itself can be viewed for free at most UK libraries or can purchased from the BSI at: They also offer a straightforward how to guide to applying it: SEDEX: LOCOG s Sustainable Sourcing Code mandates that suppliers of certain categories of goods and services within Olympic venues are required to sign up to SEDEX (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange). Where relevant, suppliers for Coca-Cola s Olympic Games Project are therefore obligated to disclose their supply chain and register their production sites. SEDEX is a secure, web-based system through which suppliers share data with their customers and stakeholders on four key issues: labour standards, health and safety, business integrity and environmental matters.
