16 Challenges & Possibilities for R&D In 2008 the establishment of research, studies and business centre valley NEMUNAS - was initiated with the purpose to concentrate research, studies and business potential in agriculture, forestry, water and food husbandry, as well as human resources and RED infrastructure for the implementation of perspective RED projects in the fields of agro-biotechnologies, bioenergetics, forestry, food technologies, safety and healthiness, for training of highly qualified specialists as well as to for commercialisation of scientific results, transfer of technologies and establishment of the new knowledge-intensive business. 23 Laboratory of Environment Monitoring The purpose of the laboratory - applied and basic research in area of ecology, environmental science and environmental engineering. Research area: Dug wells and surface-water quality and its dynamic studies; Various agrotechnologies influence on soil and groundwater quality; Forest vegetation studies of forest outskirts; Sources of pollution impact on forest ecosystems components; Electrochemical and chemical tests of organic and conventional agricultural plant production.
