Students are able to follow along and repeat lessons as needed. Each lesson has five or six practice worksheets, allowing enough practice for those who need it, while students showing early mastery can quickly skip to the assessments. Practice sheets include review of previously-learned concepts, so students are encouraged to complete at least one sheet with each lesson. Lessons tend to focus on the how and why of math instead of rote ( drill ) instruction. Excel Math K 6 th Excel Math Offline: individual student set (worktext), teaching guide, audio tape Description: Excel Math provides math instruction sequenced to build upon previous lessons, causing an integration of lessons, while also spiraling to provide review from previous concepts. Student work pages are set up to allow for self-correction, giving immediate feedback so students can either try to correct errors or seek help. Another key feature is the daily practice of working with word problems to apply the concept learned to contextual situations instead of simply crunching numbers out of context. Saxon Math Homeschool Kit Saxon Offline: textbook, tests, solutions manual Description: Not recommended for Algebra. Strengths: Saxon is an easy-to-implement offline math program that many homeschooling parents prefer. It presents lessons in a looping fashion that requires students to continuously revisit concepts. Weaknesses: Many students find the program boring, and it doesn t work with all learning styles. The use of the D.I.V.E. (Digital Interactive Video Education) CD can counter this drawback for many students. For grades 1-3, incorporating the use of Saxon manipulatives is highly recommended.
5 Saxon Manipulative Kit Complete K 3 rd Saxon Type: supplemental Offline: hands-on math manipulatives Description: For use with Saxon Math grades K-3. The Manipulative Kit Complete covers all of the required and optional manipulatives for the Saxon primary program.
