26 Entrance Requirements ABB Finance, by its nature, is a highly quantitative discipline. A -level Mathematics is not necessary to enter the BSc Finance, but you should have an aptitude for and enjoyment of mathematics if you apply for this degree.

28 What is the problem? Governments have been spending more than they have been earning Has led to them taking on a lot of debt Some countries are almost bankrupt

31 What could happen? If banks do not get their money back they could also go bankrupt If businesses cannot borrow money they may also go bankrupt This would lead to lower wages and higher unemployment

32 What can be done? Resolving the crisis will cost somebody a lot of money The big question is: who will pay?

33 Borrowers pay Could require Greece and other countries to pay back their debt Would mean they would cut spending on healthcare, education etc, and increase the amount of tax they take from their citizens May lead to political instability

34 Banks pay Could let Greece and other countries go bankrupt and force banks to lose their money Would lead to banking instability and increase the risk of a new Credit Crunch

35 Euro countries pay Richer countries who are not in as much debt could pay off some of the Greeks' debts German citizens would have to cut their spending and pay higher taxes, to help countries who have been reckless with their own finances

36 European Central Bank pays ECB can essentially print money and pay off the debts with the new money This leads to inflation as the higher amount of money leads to higher prices Everyone in the Eurozone would be affected by the higher prices

37 What would you do? If you had to advise Eurozone finance ministers on what to do, what would you recommend? Who should bear most of the cost?

38 Can you make money from the crisis? Professional fund managers have to try to make money for their clients even during a crisis Where could you invest now?

39 Stability Some investments have stable prices and are not affected much by financial instability Could invest in gold, or large stable companies like electricity suppliers

40 Take a risk on things improving If you are optimistic about the crisis being resolved you could buy assets which have recently fallen in price, and hope that they rise again Could buy government bonds of Greece and other risky countries, or invest in bank shares

41 Take a risk on things getting worse Can profit from asset price falls by short-selling Could make huge profits if short sell bonds or shares and those countries or companies go bankrupt
