2 2 The Sceptre A Letter from the Principal - Dear Families and Friends of CKS, As I have said before, growing up in New England instilled in me a deep love for the season of fall. I wonder at the deep colors of the leaves turning; I revel in the crisp mornings; I give thanks for the great harvest that come from summer s work; it is also a time of excitement as schools open and children gather again to learn. This fall was especially blessed as we had the wonderful opening of our new facility at CKS! The completion of this building is a demonstration not only of the generosity of our community but a daily witness of God s presence. Our campaign was made possible by the faith of our leaders and the sacrifice by many during a time when it did not seem possible. But as Scripture teaches, anything is possible with God. So, I am excited to present this annual report as testimony of how all in our community give glory to God in our lives by our commitment to serve God through the education of the faithful. Along with greeting over 259 students, Pre K through 8th Grades, we welcomed back many of our teachers and celebrated the addition of others: Rachel Mathew and Natalie Dunton (Pre-K), Lina Wellborn (Sixth Grade), Rhonda Keckley (Library/Learning Specialist), Valerie Jackopin soon to be Valerie Czechowski (Music), and Christine Linck (Development). We are thrilled to now have our Preschool on campus with 20 new smiling faces. If you need a lift, come to our Pre-K!! As always, worship continues to be central to our lives as the school offers thanksgiving and remembrance to God and the communion of saints through our weekly Masses with Father Dexter and Father Joe. We celebrated the sacraments with our Second and Eighth Grade. And sent the Class of 2011 off to do great things in high school they are missed but the Class of 2012 has already taken on great leadership along with the other students in our Junior High. On Grandparents Day in October, we had a packed house with grandparents coming to share the day with their grandchildren and our first concert on our new stage! We hosted the Community Celebration of Art, a Chess Tournament, and our first volleyball and basketball games. We are looking forward to our Christmas Pageant in three weeks! Our students continue to rank as one of the top schools in nation and Diocese. Like all schools in our Diocese, our test scores place us above the national average. Our students continue to use their gifts given to them by God and give thanks in how hard they work each day. In addition, we are called by God to be a people who partners for the future of the Church in the world. Many classes have participated in service projects Operation Shoe Box for the troops, lunches for Room in the Inn, a dinner for Hospitality House, to name a few. After Halloween, one of our parents organized a collection of leftover candy there were boxes full. As a school we sent over forty baby bottles full of donations to babies at the Hope Clinic in addition to what the church collected and currently are collecting two hundred and fifty hot chocolate boxes for the Ladies of Charity Christmas Food baskets. Throughout this annual report, you will see the many great things that Christ the King School has to offer beyond its building. I hope you enjoy seeing the children live out the mission of our school as much as I do. I know that none of this would be possible without your prayers and commitments to our parish school. I thank you for your generosity and ask that you keep our community in your prayers. With your support the children of Christ the King School and Parish can live out God s mission of love, compassion and social justice to the world. Peace, Christine Caron Gebhardt Principal ON THE COVER: The 7th & 8th Grade Cheerleaders won the Spirit Award at the 2011 Parochial League Cheerleading Competition, coached by CKS alumna, Rachael Barrett ( 05). 11 Father Ryan Marching Band A Dream Season - by Lisa Horak The 2011 season was record-breaking and awe-inspiring for the Father Ryan Marching Band. Members of the band performed on the highest level, carrying themselves with the most spectacular class that embodies the nature of Father Ryan High School students. The band won accolades at each contest they participated in this year. Father Ryan students and CKS alums Nick Horak ( 08), James Della Croce ( 09), Catherine Weiss ( 10), and William Downey ( 10) all had a part in Father Ryan s Marching Band 2011 awardwinning dream season. The band supports FRHS athletics performing at football games. The band also has a competitive season participating in local, regional and national marching contests. The contests provide the band with the opportunity to compete against other music ensembles and vie for awards in music performance, visual effect, best auxiliary (color guard) and percussion. The band participated in five contests this year, and at each contest the group captured the hearts and imaginations of the crowds and judges. The band was named Grand Champion, taking first place in four of its five contests for the year a major accomplishment for any band nationwide. The band made history at the Bands of America regional competition on Alabama, winning the contest and being named Grand Champion. In the Bands of America Grand National competition, the band competed against top bands nationwide. At the contest, the group competed against 92 bands, some that had members, and stood out as something fresh and exciting. The Father Ryan Marching Band finished its season ranked 15th nationally, and 2nd in their class, the highest ranked Tennessee band in over 10 years a tremendous accomplishment, and a true testament to the hard work and dedication of the band s program directors, Mr. Jeff Schletzer, Mr. Derek Schletzer, Mr. Dustin Schletzer, Mr. Jeremy Frey and all the students that participated this season. We are honored to have the Schletzer s on our staff at CTK managing our music programs. While at The Bands of America Grand Nationals, the band made such an impression that out of 92 bands competing, Father Ryan was awarded the Al Castronovo Esprit De Corps Award. The award is a special award not based on any scores from the competition and is open to all bands participating in the contest. The Bands of America staff evaluates groups throughout the event and select the one group most exhibiting pride, spirit, enthusiasm, friendliness, and unity of purpose for the activity of marching bands in this The Sceptre country.the Father Ryan Marching Band was awarded this award out of 92 bands in a ceremony at the Finals full retreat in front of thousands. While the season officially ended at the Grand National competition in Indianapolis in November, the accolades continue. The Marching Band has been nominated for the John Philip Sousa Foundation s Sudler Shield International Award recognizing excellence and innovation in marching band. Results are expected in December of this year. Coming off a dream season and looking ahead to next year, the band has much to look forward to. Recently, the band was selected to participate in the Macy s 2012 Thanksgiving Day Parade - a huge honor for Father Ryan, its students and directors. The parade, first televised nationally in 1947, draws some 44 million viewers not counting the 3 million people who line the 2.5-mile Manhattan route. Congratulations FRHS Band and CKS alumni on your award-winning season! The FRHS Marching Band is looking for new members to continue its legacy of success. Musical experience is not necessary dedication and a good attitude is! For more information on becoming a member of this exciting group, contact Derek Schletzer (schletzerd@fatherryan. org).
