1 App Design Proposal App Inventor Name: _Tracy Lloyd Submission Date: November 6, I. Planning Table (30 points) The Name of Your App Details Notes for Yourself Category of Your App Why are you building this app? For example, what kind of contextual problem (daily life, learning, instruction, work etc.) are you solving? User Group(s) (age/job/education level etc.) Social-Emotional Learning/Communication To provide assistance with emotional regulation for children who are prone to emotional meltdowns in the classroom. Children with emotional regulation difficulties Autism, autism spectrum, sensory overload issues, Sotos Syndrome and others with behavioural problems as a result of emotional disregulation. User Test Plan Who are the testers? o My daughter o My daughter s EA When do you plan to test your app? o Third week of November How do you plan to test your app? o Send ipod to classroom with EA and have her monitor use of app. Where do you plan to test your app? o In daughter s classroom and at home. How does this app work? Provide one-paragraph narrative below to briefly describe how users interact with the app. The child will slide his or her finger up along a thermometer until she reaches her level of emotional disregulation. Once she stops the button for that level will click and the corresponding face (emotional representation) 1

2 will be highlighted. The child can then click on the face to go to a screen where she can draw how her body is feeling on a blank outline of a human body (i.e. headache, pounding heart, etc.). A help button (question mark) will also pulse and the child (or TA) can click on help to receive strategies on what to do based on the level of emotional arousal. User test results (if you have done it for this app) What did the users say about your app (e.g., fun factors, visual appeal, navigation, buttons, colors, etc?) App not completed. Dissemination Plan Future development plan for this App To whom and how do you plan to promote/distribute your app? Do you plan to use it with your students or at work? Initially I plan on using this app with my child at home and, possibly in the classroom if approved by the teacher and TA (and it tests out properly). If this app is successful, I would like to look into marketing it to the creator of the 5-point scale, Kari Dunn Buron. (e.g., features or function to add; reasons for your future development plan etc.) Possible future version upgrade to include educational assistant tool based on the emotional cascade (represented by an arch; see 5-point scale). Possible revision to allow for customization of app with regard to strategies (i.e. EA can assist child with entering her own strategies which will be stored in a TinyDB). I am uncertain about the copyright/legalities surrounding the creation of this app. The creator of the 5-point scale is Kari Dunn Buron ( tscale.com/index.h tm). This is a system my daughter is currently using so was the inspiration for my app; however, I realize I probably won t be able to market it in its present form. Possible redevelopment of app interface in order to market it (i.e. volcano erupting or sun rising). 2

(e.g., buttons, labels, images, animations, textbox for input etc.) i. Buttons for each level on the scale with colours ii. Buttons for each emotion (face icon) iii. Buttons for each strategy (question mark) iv. Label for title of screen b. What are some Non-visible components you plan to have on the component designer? (e.g., sound, location sensor, TinyDB etc.) i. Rising pitch sound ii. Button click sounds iii. Vibration sounds c. Why do you need those components mentioned above (aesthetic, relevance function etc.)? i. Buttons are necessary to provide full interactivity for the app. The user needs to feel connected to the app and to know exactly what is happening as they interact with it. ii. Colours are needed to correspond to the scale and to simulate a rising temperature (or emotions) iii. Rising pitch sound is needed to correspond to finger moving up scale with higher pitch indicating more emotional arousal. 1. Needs to be gentle enough, however, so as not to increase emotional arousal. iv. A vibration as each new level on the scale is reached and with each button push. 1. To provide tactile feedback to child who may not be attending well visually due to increased emotional arousal. Screen 1 User Interface 3
