4 Welcome Message As the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, I am very pleased to welcome You to the 2014 International Conference on Signals and Electronic Systems, ICSES This is the ninth conference under that name, and the thirty-first organized by the same community of scientists working in the area of circuits, signals and electronic systems. Each previous conference provided an excellent opportunity to present new scientific results, to discuss topics of interest, and to acquire ideas for further research. It is up to You to make the Conference another successful event in the ICSES series This year, ICSES appears to be a rather small event there are only 34 accepted papers. In this situation, we decided to organize a one-track conference with oral sessions only. It is really a pity, as years ago it was always the most important occasion to gather the society of Polish scientists working in fields related to electronics and signal processing. The event is now supported by IEEE, and part of the papers will be published in renowned journals. I would like to express my deep appreciation to all Organizing Committee members and in particular to Mieczysław Jessa for constructing the technical program. I would like to thank the International Scientific Committee members and reviewers for offering their time to review the submitted papers. 9 Practical Information Weather A characteristic feature of the Polish climate is that there are often changes in weather. Within the course of a week large temperature variation may occur. Therefore, it is recommended to take some warmer and some lighter clothes, and also a raincoat or an umbrella. The main features of September weather in Poznań are (source: - reasonable chance of long lasting precipitation, - almost no chance of subzero temperatures (during the night) and snowfall, - sunshine reasonably guaranteed; more sunny days then days without sunshine, - average maximum temperature 18 C, - average minimum temperature 9 C, - average hours of sunshine per day 5, - average days with precipitation per month 13, - average mm precipitation per month mm. Electricity Electricity standard in Poland is 230 Volts AC, 50Hz. Standard European appliances do not need any adaptors. E and C plug & socket types are used. The proper plugs are shown bellow. 9

10 Time The time in Poland is the same as in the whole Central Europe, i.e. GMT +1.. In 2014, during the period from 23 March to 26 October one hour must be added. 11 Invited Talks Thursday, September 11, 2014, Heterogeneous 3D Systems-on-Chip without External Power Supply Maciej Ogorzałek, Jagiellonian University, Poland Abstract: Since the launch of the Smart-dust project aimed at development of millimeter-scale circuits which contain all-in-one sensors, processors, communication and power supply parts considerable advance has been made in technologies which might be useful in construction of autonomous self-powered circuits and systems. The 3D chip technology and possibility of inclusion of heterogenous technologies brings new solutions for integration of new building blocks into one system-on-chip. These new technologies based on new nano materials offer construction of ultra-capacitors (of capacitances in the range of 1000 Farads per cubic centimeter). As possible energy sources the revolutionary nano-batteries based on nano-wires and nano-tubes attract a lot of attention along with a wide range of energy scavenging devices that could be used to load the battery. Unfortunately such components can not be fabricated in silicon and possible integration into one chip brings many new problems and challenges. In this presentation we describe the idea of a system composed of a functional part (processing layer) + energy storage device (ultra cap) + energy source (nano-structure battery) + energy scavenger all integrated into one chip in 3D technology. 11

12 Maciej Ogorzalek (IEEE Fellow-1997) is Professor and Head of the Department of Information Technologies, Jagiellonian University Krakow, Poland. He held several visiting positions in Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Japan, Hong Kong he held the Chair of Biosignals and Systems, Hong Kong Polytechnic University under the Distinguished Scholars Scheme. Author or co-author of over 280 technical papers published in journals and conference proceedings, author of the book Chaos and Complexity in Nonlinear Electronic Circuits (World Scientific, 1997). He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Circuits and Systems Magazine , Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems Part I, and , he was elected Member of the Editorial Board Proceedings of the IEEE He serves also as an Associate Editor International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos (since 2004), Journal of the Franklin Institute (since 1997), and Member of the Editorial board ofthe International Journal of Circuit Theory and Applications (2000-). He served the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society in various capacities including 2008 Society President. He was CAS Society Distinguished Lecturer ( ) and received the 2002 Guillemin-Cauer Award, IEEE-CAS Golden Jubilee Award and IEEE-CAS meritorious Service Award. In 2012 he has been elected member of the European Academy of Sciences. He was co-organizer of the CAS-FEST event devoted to Heterogeneous nano-circuits and systems at ISCAS 2012 and guest editor of a special issue of IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Circuits and Systems (with Giovanni DeMicheli and Subasish Mitra) devoted to this subject. 12

13 Friday, September 12, 2014, Two Decades of Audio Compression: the Evolution of Tools Maciej Bartkowiak, Poznań University of Technology, Poland Abstract: A short overview of recent advances in audio lossy data compression will be offered, based on the standard techniques developed by ISO/IEC and MPEG. A perspective of over 20 years of development will be illustrated by some milestones, and the outlook for future trends will be given. The main focus of the presentation is on the evolution of various coding tools. It will be discussed, how the main approach to compression gradually changed from the waveform coding principle towards parametric coding. The cumulative result of various enhancements to the well established scheme of perceptual coding will be demonstrated in figures and audio examples. Maciej Bartkowiak graduated from Poznan University of Technology in 1993 and received a PhD in signal processing in He is currently with the Chair of Multimedia Telecommunications and Microelectronics, Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications of Poznan University of Technology. He is an author and co-author of over 60 papers on digital image and audio processing. His main research interests are analysis, modeling and data compression of audio signals. He participated in the development of MPEG-D USAC by ISO/IEC/MPEG SC29 WG11. He is a member of the Normalization Commission for Multimedia (NKP288) by the Polish Normalization Committee (PKN). He is a member of EURASIP, IEEE SP Society, Audio Engineering Society and PTETiS. 13
