Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills / (Kindergarten 4 th grade) and Prekindergarten Guidelines C. Students will be responsible for purchasing materials needed for student presentation. CLASS OBJECTIVES: 1. Understand and demonstrate the expectations of EC-4 th grade state standards TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) in Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Fine Arts through a variety of activities completed in class. 2. Critically analyze and discuss issues related to young children including principles and classroom practices for teaching young children using developmentally appropriate teaching methods; effective planning, teaching, and assessment methods for young learners according to individual needs. 3. Demonstrate and understand developmentally appropriate activity / lessons with an integrated, constructivist approach, focused on the development of higher order thinking for young children in multilingual and multicultural classrooms. STUDENT EXPECTATIONS: 1. Attendance Policy: It is expected that students will attend all class sessions and actively participate in projects and class discussions. Attendance and participation will count toward the final grade. You will be deducted 3 pts. from your final grade for every absence. You will be responsible for signing-in during each class meeting. I hold the right to drop a student from the course on their third absence.

2 The official UTEP attendance policy for undergraduates is as follows: The student is expected to attend all classes. It is the responsibility of the student to inform each instructor of extended absences. When, however, in the judgment of the instructor, a student has been absent to such a degree as to impair his or her status relative to credit for the course, the instructor may drop the student from the class with a grade of W before the course drop deadline and with a grade of F after the course drop deadline. (UTEP Undergraduate Catalog). 2. Professional courtesy and a positive, collaborative attitude are required in this course. I invite you to communicate with me by phone, via , and during office hours if you have any questions about the course at any time during the semester. It is my job to serve you as your course instructor and to provide you with guidance throughout the semester. 3. In the case of a situation that impacts your performance in this course, please contact me at your earliest convenience. 4. If at any time you do not meet deadlines, you will be assessed a penalty. Repeated missed assignments and deadlines may result in your being withdrawn from the course by the instructor. 5. Incompletes and make-up assignments are highly discouraged. 6. You are expected to produce high quality work in this class. Pay close attention to spelling, grammatical errors, structure, and presentation. I encourage creativity, especially when it is part of a relevant and illustrative oral presentation or hands-on activity. 7. Practice using standard academic language in English, which includes proper grammar in oral language and written language. 8. Cellular phones and beepers should not be used in class, please have them turned off. If a situation arises that requires you have your cell phone or beeper on, you must keep it in silent mode or on vibrate. 9. Students with disabilities: If you have or believe that you have a disability, you may wish to self-identify. You can do this by contacting the Disabled Student Services Office (DSSO) to show documentation of a disability or to register to receive testing and services. DSSO provides the following services: note taking, sign language, interpreter, reader and/or scribe services, priority registration, adaptive technology, diagnostic testing for learning disabilities, assistance with learning strategies/tutoring, alternative testing location and format, and advocacy. 3 GRADING: Quizzes: 15 pts. You will responsible for completing the multiple choice section from each chapter. The following multiple questions can be found on Web CT Quizzes. Deadline for each chapter is noted on calendar. Lesson Plan (L.A., S.S., & Math): 15 pts. (5 pts. each) You will responsible for presenting three literature-based lessons that incorporate LA, S.S. and Math TEKS. These will be individual presentations that will be presented within groups of four, K-3rd grade. You will be graded on lesson plan - aligned with TEKS - and quality of activity. Sample lesson plan will be provided. Grade level will be assigned and lesson plan with be handed in to Professor during presentation. Presentation: 20 pts. You and a partner will be responsible for a PowerPoint presentation on a selected topic from the textbook (topic to be approved by professor).your grade will be based on the following areas and each area will be graded from 0 3. (See rubric below) KNOWLEDGE: PARTICIPATION: LENGTH: CONTENT: ACTIVITY: Shows an understanding of the material and able to answer questions Does their fair share in presenting the material and participates in each part of the presentation. Was the presentation length enough to adequately cover the material. Topic covered thoroughly with enough information given to understand topic and did not exclude any important information or include any unnecessary information. Included class in the learning process and did more than lecture to the class Tests: 20 pts. Test 1 from Chapter 1-7 and Test 2 from Chapter Note: No make-up test will be provided. Online Postings: 30 pts. You will be responsible for various entries during each class meeting. You will be graded on level of critical thinking and length of each entry and reply. You will be expected to reply to each person in your group.
