Issue 31 June 2011 Dr McClelland - Sabbatical Dr McClelland is taking a sabbatical from work this summer in order to train for and compete in the World Masters Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, California. Her last day at work will be Thursday 26 th May and she will be returning on Wednesday 10 th August. Whilst she is away her patients will be looked after by Dr Sally Wraight. Dr Wraight has worked at Rosebank previously and we are very happy to welcome her back with us. Dr Wraight will be covering all of Dr McClelland's usual surgery hours on Monday,Wednesday and Thursday. Extended Hours Surgeries From the beginning of July the Extended Hours Service will cease to exist. Adequate funding for this service has been withdrawn by the North Lancs Primary Care Trust and we regret we are therefore unable to continue to provide. DR CORBETT - FY2 REGISTRAR I am from Wellington in Shropshire, went to the university of Liverpool where I spent the last 2 years of studying in Barrow-in-Furness, worked as an FY1 there in endocrinology (general medicine) elderly medicine and upper GI surgery. Moved to Lancaster for FY2 and worked in lab medicine, (focusing on microbiology) followed by orthopaedics before joining you at Rosebank! 1
In aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care This will be held at our Galgate Site - Highland Brow On Saturday 2nd July 2011 At 10:00am until 12:00Noon There will be tea & cake / second hand book stall / tombola etc Please come along and support us 2
NATIONAL CHLAMYDIA SCREENING ARE YOU AGED 15-24? This Practice is part of the National Chlamydia Screening programme. We offer a free, confidential and simple urine test to screen for Chlamydia. Chlamydia is the most common sexual transmitted infection (STI) in the UK in young people under 25. Most people who catch it don't get any symptoms and do not know they have it. If untreated, Chlamydia can cause health problems including reducing fertility. It is easily treated once detected. Please ask at the Reception Desk for further information. CRYOTHERAPY (WART CLINIC) The Cryotherapy clinic ( wart clinic ) has been running for 20 years now. We use liquid nitrogen to freeze a variety of skin problems. The RLI has supplied our liquid nitrogen for the past 6 years or so but unfortunately will no longer be able to do this as they will no longer be getting it themselves. Freezing therapy for warts has been less popular for a number of years as the treatment is painful and the evidence shows that it is no more effective than using wart paints and sandpapering. We have continued the service until now through patient demand. However, because of the difficulties with supply, we have decided to discontinue the service now. The Physics Department at Lancaster University has kindly agreed to supply the nitrogen for our last two clinics in May and June; the service will cease thereafter. We hope this will not cause too much inconvenience. The doctors and nurses are happy to advise patients about the best treatments for warts and verrucas when necessary; your pharmacist will also be able to advise you about the various treatments that are available. 3

BOOKED YOUR HOLIDAY? THINKING OF BOOKING YOUR HOLIDAY? Remember that some holiday destinations may require or recommend vaccinations. Please make an appointment with the Practice Nurse to discuss whether vaccinations are required and for general travel advice. Remember - if you are booking a last minute trip, it may not be possible to book a last minute appointment for travel advice. Ideally check 8 weeks prior to travelling. The type of vaccines you require can depend on your destination, type of holiday and the amount of time you will be away. A few of the more commonly used vaccines are:- Hepatitis A This is transmitted via contaminated water and food. It attacks the liver and causes jaundice and fatigue. The vaccine needs to be given at least 2 weeks before travel. A second vaccine if given 6 months after gives 10 years protection. Typhoid Fever This is also caused by contaminated food and water, and causes high temperatures, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. The vaccine should be given at least 1 week before travel and lasts for 3 years. Tetanus & Polio vaccine Ensure these are up to date. Other vaccines are required for different parts of the world and at different times of the year. Rabies Rabies is a fatal disease and is transmitted via the salvia of a rabid animal through a bite or a scratch. It occurs on all continents of the world but there is a particular high risk in Africa, South America, Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Rabies is preventable via vaccination with a 3 dose schedule and is available at Rosebank for a cost of However, it is important for travellers to seek medical attention following potential exposure to obtain a booster vaccine. Travellers with no previous vaccination history following a potentially rabid bite will need an Immunoglobulin administered plus the complete course of vaccine. Unfortunately the immunoglobulin is becoming increasingly difficult to get hold of in some of the high risk countries and therefore pre travel 7
vaccination is highly recommended. The practice nurse will be able to advise you on potential risk for each country visited. Malaria This is prevalent in some countries and is a dangerous disease, which is spread by mosquitoes. Malaria produces a high fever and can in some cases affect the kidneys, liver, brain and blood, and can be fatal. Your Practice Nurse will tell you the type of tablets you will need for your destination. Even if you have taken the medication and you develop a fever or feel ill while abroad or up to 3 months after you return, see your doctor. Travelling around the world always brings some risks to your health, so in order for you minimise most health hazards - seek advice. Measles Outbreak in France There has been a recent upsurge in measles cases linked to France. The Health Protection Agency is advising that all travellers to Mainland Europe should ensure they have adequate immunity (x2 doses of MMR or equivalent). Please ask the practice nurse if you are unsure about your immunity status. Eat & drink safely If you have any doubts about the purity of the water, use only bottled water for drinking and cleaning teeth. Do not have ice cubes in your drinks and ensure the seal on bottled water is intact. Eat only freshly cooked food that is hot or food you can peel. Take care in the sun Ensure that you have a high factor sun cream over exposure can cause sunburn, which leads to premature ageing of the skin and can lead to skin cancer. 8
You can now order your prescription on-line and this will benefit you in the following ways: 1. You can order on-line at your own convenience 2. This may save you a journey to drop your prescription request off at the surgery 3. Free up the telephone if you wish to make an appointment 4. No errors - you get exactly what you order 5. This is easy and convenient to help give you a better service If this is something you would be interested in; please ask for information at the Reception Desk and the Receptionist will issue you with a starter pack with all the relevant instructions for you to order your prescription from home. 9
