1 WESTERN ROAD SURGERY PATIENT NEWSLETTER JULY 2008 We are finally starting to see some sunshine and hopefully we will all benefit from the warmer weather. I would like to take this opportunity to remind anyone who is travelling to the far flung corners of the world to organise an appointment with one of the Nurses to ensure you are up to date with the recommended vaccinations. Please also make sure that you take your first aid kit, sun screens and any spray/creams recommended to keep the bugs at bay. For those of you holidaying in the UK or countries a bit closer to hand, you will still need protecting from the sun and the bugs so please ensure your travel kit contains all the necessary items to keep you well and safe. We can t stop people laughing at your passport photo, but we can vaccinate you against travel-related diseases Enjoy the summer. Julie Jackson Practice Manager

2 Are you thinking of Travelling Abroad? It is worth remembering that vaccinations are recommended for many countries. Vaccinations are available from the surgery by making an appointment with the Practice Nurse who will discuss and plan your requirements. Please allow 2-4 weeks before you travel in order for the vaccines to be effective. For more extensive travel i.e. Trips lasting more than 1 month, please allow 2 months before your departure date, as a course of vaccines may be required. Useful Travel Information Web Sites MALARIA It only takes one bite! One bite from a mosquito could potentially put you in hospital or even kill you. Before you travel visit the Practice Nurse for advice on malaria protection.

3 HEATWAVE In a severe heatwave you may get dehydrated and your body may overheat. If you already have a heart or respiratory problem, this may make your symptoms worse. Additionally, it can cause heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Keeping yourself cool will reduce the risk of illness. If you start to feel unwell, it is important to seek medical advice as soon as soon as possible. The symptoms of heat exhaustion include headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, muscle weakness or cramps, pale skin, and a high temperature. You should move somewhere cool and drink plenty of water or fruit juice. If you can, take a lukewarm shower, or sponge yourself down with cold water. Heatstroke can develop if heat exhaustion is left untreated, but it can also occur suddenly and without warning. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, an intense thirst, sleepiness, hot, red and dry skin, a sudden rise in temperature, confusion, aggression, convulsions and loss of consciousness. Heatstroke can result in irreversible damage to your body, including the brain or death. The above is an excerpt from the NHS Heatwave booklet which is available in the surgery waiting room or on line at (please look in the health education section)
