1 International INTERNATIONAL NURSING PROGRAM IN TANZANIA 2015 Deadline: November 7, 2014 Program Dates: May 2-16, 2015 STUDENT APPLICATION PACKAGE NSCC International creates international learning opportunities for NSCC Students and Employees as part of NSCC s UNIQUE LEARNING EXPERIENCE. ENTREPRENEURSHIP and INNOVATION are a special focus for programs this academic year. Program Summary Program Qualifications NSCC will partner with the Centre for Nursing Studies (CNS) in Newfoundland to participate in this program for LPN (NSCC) and RN (CNS) students in Mikumi, Tanzania. The students will work at the St. Kizito hospital to perform part of the clinical requirement for their program. The faculty lead would act as a preceptor to monitor the activities and ensure the learning is aligned with policy and regulations. In addition, the group will learn about healthcare in the local community by travelling with mobile units on visits outside of the hospital and participate in cultural learning activities throughout the program. This program is open to NSCC students from the following programs: Practical Nursing Successful completion of this program will provide the students with part of a work term equivalency. Faculty Involvement Selected faculty will provide support to the students during all phases of the program and will act as a preceptor to monitor the students learning activities.

2 About the Centre for Nursing Studies The Centre for Nursing Studies (CNS) was established in 1996 and is operated by Eastern Health and is located in St. John s Newfoundland. CNS offers a variety of high quality nursing education programs to prepare graduates to provide excellent patient care across a broad range of health care and social settings. Programs are offered both on-site and by distance delivery. CNS is the largest nursing school in Newfoundland and Labrador with approximately 750 students across all programs, 50 full-time faculty members and, at peak periods, an almost equal number of sessional faculty. CNS provides continuing studies programs (post-basic courses) to Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), re-entry programs for RNs and LPNs, a tailored bridging and re-entry program for internationally educated nurses (IENs), and competency-based assessments of nurses in practice for the Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (ARNNL) and regional health authorities as requested. Enrollment in continuing studies programs is variable depending on health care system demand. About Mikumi, Tanzania and St. Kizito Hospital NSCC has been working in Mikumi Tanzania since 2010 with partner institution VETA Mikumi. During this time NSCC has fostered a relationship with St. Kizito hospital who also partners on several initiatives with VETA Mikumi and is located directly across the road from the campus. St. Kizito Hospital was built 20 years ago by Catholic missionaries and originally served as a dispensary. It later became a hospital and was recognized by the Ministry of Health in January Since then, about 115,000 people have been provided with medical assistance. Over the past five years, NSCC has been working with Mikumi Vocational Training Centre (part of the Tanzania Vocational Education Training Authority VETA) on a Canadian Government funded project managed by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) called Education for Employment (EFE). The purpose of the project is to build capacity of tourism training offered at the VTC, which is adjacent to a national park, and experience a growth in wildlife and adventure tourism. Initiatives have included faculty and staff exchange, teacher training, leadership and management training, curriculum review, library services and IT enhancements, marketing, social media and entrepreneurship training, outreach to industry, tourism industry study tours in Nova Scotia, and NSCC student and faculty study tours at Mikumi. In addition, NSCC is a partner with the VETA ( on a leadership training initiative for managers. The Mikumi VTC is 400 kilometres outside of Dar es Salaam, just outside the Mikumi National Park boundary in Mikumi Town, and is fully equipped with a restaurant, overnight accommodations, a tourist information centre and a conference centre. NOTE: Tanzania is located in East Africa, not in West Africa which is the area of the continent affected by the Ebola Virus. All of NSCC s project locations are constantly monitored for health and safety risks. For more information on Ebola and student mobility click here: Program Components Pre-departure phase will focus on research to be conducted from the beginning of the second term (January 2015) up until departure to Tanzania. NSCC students and faculty will conduct research activities in collaboration with colleagues from St. Kizito Hospital. The purpose will be to learn about healthcare in Tanzania, the capacity of St. Kizito hospital and identify any concerns or problems that could arise. On-site project phase in Tanzania will have NSCC and CNS students job shadowing and helping at the St. Kizito hospital Post-project phase with allow the team to debrief about their experience and initiate plans for future programming.

3 Learning Outcomes To develop a comprehensive understanding of the application of nursing/health care knowledge in Tanzania and assess how the determinants of health and local conditions there impact on people s health status; To develop and refine the skills needed to prepare for and participate in an international learning experience including research, organization, risk management, teamwork, interpersonal communication and cultural competence and sensitivity. To learn how to work collaboratively with other disciplines and across health care sectors. To apply a portfolio and reflective approach to personal learning with the goal of using this international experience to increase the chances of employability. Selection Criteria Must be a NSCC student with a valid passport (or able to get one). Must be a student enrolled in the Practical Nursing Program. Applicants must be in good academic standing. Within two weeks of receiving approval, students are expected to submit a $500 deposit toward the program fees. The dates for the remaining payments will be identified after being selected for the program. Complete applications should be sent via to international@nscc.ca. Paper applications will not be accepted. Applications can be scanned into a single document or sent as attachments. 4 Program Cost The approximate costs associated with this program are outlined below. The exact costs will be confirmed and will depend on the Tanzanian Shilling and US Dollar exchange rate. The following costs will be included in your, Program Fee payable to Nova Scotia Community College. Student Bursary Students will have the opportunity to apply for a $500 bursary from NSCC International (made possible through external funding) to participate in the program.
