1 Nursing (A.D.N.) Program - FAQ What is the LPN to ADN Mobility program? The LPN to Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Mobility program at St. Cloud Technical and Community College (SCTCC) is for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) to be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). This examination measures the competencies needed to perform safely and effectively as a newly licensed, entry-level nurse. A student must pass this exam in order to be licensed as a RN. What is an Associate Degree Nurse? The Associate Degree Nurse (ADN) is a Registered Nurse who provides care both interdependently and independently as a nursing professional. RNs work collaboratively with physicians, providers, therapists and other health care members. Often, an ADN degree is referred to as a 2-year RN, whereas a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is referred to as a 4-year RN. Do I have to be licensed as a LPN by the BON at the time of application? Yes, the applicant must have a LPN license, in good standing. License verification will be done at the time of application. The LPN license can be from another state. How long is the program? What degree do I earn? Does it transfer? Once admitted, the LPN to ADN Mobility Program will be 3 semesters in length. It may take additional time due to completion of prerequisites, and students often work on general education requirements while waiting for program admission. Students will start every summer session (May Term) and graduate the following spring semester with a Nursing AS degree and will be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) exam. Some 4-year colleges offer completion programs in which Associate Degree RNs may continue to pursue their Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. These are typically 2-year programs, scheduled to accommodate working adults. SCTCC has a formal articulation agreement in place for the ADN to BSN degree with Moorhead State University. When do courses begin? The Mobility program courses will begin the first day of May term. Classes will be held at SCTCC, with integrated online learning.

2 What are the hours of the program? The program courses will be offered Monday-Friday. Nursing lecture classes will be during the day. Coursework includes lectures, on-campus labs, and clinical experiences at health care facilities in the surrounding communities. Clinicals will be primarily during the days, but may be during evening hours. Students may have to travel a distance of up to 50 miles to clinical sites. Clinical learning occurs in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities in St. Cloud and other outlying rural communities. How many students will be accepted into the ADN Mobility program? 40 students will be accepted into the LPN to ADN Mobility program each year. It is anticipated that many more students will apply each year than SCTCC can accept. A limited number of students will be placed on a ranked alternate list. Students placed on the list will be eligible for last-minute admission to the program but will not be guaranteed admission in the next year's program. All students wishing to gain admission into future programs must reapply, including those not admitted from the alternate list. What are the Admission requirements for the LPN to ADN Mobility Program? The student must have applied and been admitted to SCTCC or have their status reinstated if previously a student. However, acceptance to SCTCC does not guarantee acceptance into the LPN to ADN Mobility Program. Priority will be given to students with a GPA of 3.00 or above in required prerequisite and previous LPN coursework to be considered for admission in the LPN to ADN Mobility Program. The student must be an LPN and have completed courses as listed on the Required Coursework for the LPN to ADN Mobility Program click here. The students will be chosen based on a point system in the proposed LPN to ADN mobility program rubric, which will include: GPA of prerequisite coursework, GPA of LPN coursework, and coursework completed at SCTCC. At this time, we are not requiring work experience as an LPN to be considered for admission. From this rubric evaluation, 80 students will be chosen to take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS-V), which is a multiple-choice assessment of basic academic knowledge in reading, mathematics, science, and English. Upon testing, these areas are then scored on a rubric, with emphasis on the areas of science and reading. Who is selected to take the TEAS-V Admission Test? All applicants are ranked on the admission rubric. The top scoring 80 applicants will be invited to take the TEAS-V entrance exam. The test will be at SCTCC and will take up to 4 hours. The 80 people chosen will be

3 notified and will need to register online and pay for the test (which will be around $35.00). Then, they will be able to register for a date/time to take the test at SCTCC. *Note, if you need disability related accommodations to make these events accessible, please contact Judy Jacobson Berg at (320) or jjacobsonberg@sctcc.edu at least one week in advance of the event. The results of the TEAS-V entrance exam are available immediately to the student. The 40 students who score highest overall on all aspects of the admission rubric will be formally notified of provisional acceptance into the LPN to ADN Mobility Program. The remaining students will be ranked and considered as alternates. How do I apply? Submit an application to SCTCC and make sure you are admitted and then fill out the on-line application to the LPN to ADN Mobility Program. Attendance at a nursing information meeting within a 12-month period is recommended prior to submitting the LPN to ADN Mobility Program application to assure proper preparation for meeting the minimum application criteria. The 2011 LPN to ADN Mobility Program on-line application will be available from February 1st through February 28th, Applications with missing or incomplete information or failure to meet the deadline will not be considered for admission into the LPN to ADN Mobility program. All applicants will receive notification of acceptance or non-acceptance into the LPN to ADN Mobility Program via the provided on the application (SCTCC preferred). I've started a Nursing Program at another college. Can I join into your core program midstream?

4 No. Each college designs and sequences its own Nursing Program courses. Other college's core nursing courses would not necessarily cover the content in the same sequence as those at SCTCC. I've received my provisional acceptance letter; when do I register for classes? What should I bring to orientation? The 40 students that are chosen for the LPN to ADN Mobility Program will be required to attend a mandatory orientation session to the program prior to the start of classes. Orientation will include information on registration, clinical requirements, accounts, student ID badges, uniforms, shoes, and stethoscope requirements. Additional information on what to bring to the orientation will be sent to students after provisional acceptance into the program. Students will need to pass a MN Criminal Background study prior to starting the program. Upon starting clinicals in the fall, students will need to provide proof of current CPR/AED for healthcare providers, their immunization status/history, and complete a general physical examination. A second MN Criminal Background Study will be required in December. Information on when these items should be completed will be given at orientation. How many hours can I work and still do well in the LPN to ADN Mobility Program? It is recognized that many students hold part-time jobs while attending nursing classes, full-time employment is NOT recommended. However, nursing faculty consider that school must be a student's primary priority while enrolled in the program. Student employment is secondary and faculty will not compromise the quality of the learning experience to adjust to individual student employment demands. No special consideration will be given to students who have work/school time conflicts. How many credits are in the program? There are a total of 60 credits in the LPN to ADN Mobility program; 31 credits of prerequisite general education requirements, 11 credits of transferred LPN coursework credits, 18 credits in the ADN program (2 for summer session (May term) 8 for fall and 8 for spring). All core nursing classes must be completed sequentially. Other classes required for the degree are listed on the LPN to ADN Mobility Degree Required Coursework. **Please note that Biology 1325 and Gerontology 1300 may be taken concurrently with ADN coursework, however priority is given to students who complete them prior to admission into the program. How much does the LPN to ADN Mobility program cost? The costs are listed as follows:

5 Tuition is based on 18 ADN credits taken over the summer, fall, and spring semesters. Current tuition is $ per credit excluding fees. Books, instructional materials, lab fees, and uniforms will also be an additional cost and are approximately $1,500. Please note: All prices are subject to change per semester/year. Is the LPN to ADN Mobility program accredited? The program has been approved by the MnSCU system (Higher Education Commission) and the Minnesota Board of Nursing. SCTCC s Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program has applied for national accreditation through the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). This process can take up to two years.
