Macquarie University was a pioneer in many fields in the openness of its admissions procedures, in the semester and point system, in the advising of students, in widening students choices, in aspects of small group and external teaching, in the educational use of the library, in academic self-appraisal, including the guidelines for grading. Founded to be different, we re a university that crosses traditional boundaries. welcomed nontraditional students pioneered academic self appraisal and the now-common grading system introduced childcare on campus for first time in Australia helped develop calculator for visually impaired appointed Australia s first female Vice-Chancellor helped make wi-fi a reality opened Australia s first not-for-profit private teaching hospital 4

Among top 2% of universities in the world, top 10 in Australia (Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities) 5 stars in all QS categories: Teaching, employability, research, internationalisation, facilities, innovation, access and specialist subjects (QS 2015) #18 most international university in the world (Times Higher Education, 2015) Top 100 in the world in 9 subjects (QS subject rankings 2015) #1 MBA in Australia / #68 in the world (Financial Times, 2015) 120 researchers ranked in the world s top 1% (Essential Science Indicators 2014) 85% of research rated world standard or higher (Excellence in Research for Australia, 2012) 5

6 The challenge WHO ARE WE NOW? For more than 50 years we have been quiet pioneers. In our second halfcentury we must share our story with the world. [We need to] more effectively raise our voices, inspire our students, and champion our staff and our researchers, so that we may take our rightful place on the global stage as a university that leads the world.
