2 2 BEYO LU BEYOĞLU MUNICIPALITY S FAST-BREAKING DINNER Demircan: We are like a fertile land with our past Through this dinner, important names of diplomacy, business, politics, culture, art and sports were gathered. Mevlevi whirling perfomance took place before the dinner. In this 500 years old msythic place unity and solidarity messages were given. Beyoğlu Municipality s traditional fast breaking dinner brought Jewish, Greek, Armenian, Assyrian Communities leaders and representatives together at Galata Dervish Lodge. During the dinner unity and solidarity messages were given. Mayor of Beyoğlu Ahmet Misbah Demircan hosted the dinner which gathered different religions and cultures. Mayor of Beyoğlu Ahmet Misbah Demircan stressed during his speech; Different cultures have been living in Beyoğlu together for years. With our thousand years of past we are like a fertile land for our thousand years of future and we ll continue tol ive together on this land. Güler: The richness of the differences exists in Beyoğlu President for internal affairs of Turkish General Assembly and AKP Mardin Parliamentarian Güler mentioned that Galata Dervish Lodge is a very important cultural place and Beyoğlu is a district which gathers İstanbul s spirit in one. Living the richness of differences is possible in Beyoğlu. We are living the notions that the modern world is looking for the notions essential for the politics such as differences, indulgence, empathy and negotiation. Çağrıcı: Ramadan is the common value that every religion feel. Mufti of Istanbul Prof. Dr. Mustafa Çağrıcı mentioned that Ramadan brings different kind of sensations and joy. During one month we all live humanism and Islam deeply. We feel the importance of friendship, sharing and breathe it. Ramadan has been a common value of all times like it is today. Bartholomeos: Prayers are the complement of all values. Fener Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitri Bartholomeos said that Fasting will be meaningful if we fulfill some virtues such as going on the right way, being honest and fair, avoid from jealousy and sedition, helpingprotecting needy and poor people, sharing love and joy. Prayers are the complement of all values. Haleva: Ramadan is the month of mercy. Chief Rabbi İsak Haleva mentioned that The message of all religions is that we were all born from the same mother and father. Ramadan is the month of mercy. Whether we behave merciless and cruel to each other how could we wish for mercy from God when we ll need mercy. It is the most important message of Ramadan. A lot of money is allocated to weapons in the world. Is the wish of God that people kill each other? We should be merciful and love each other. Turkey may light and may be the lodestar on this issue. 3 3 WORLD S FOLK HEROES AT BEYOĞLU MUNICIPAL YOUTH CENTER Beyoğlu Municipality hosts an important international youth project entitled Folk Heroes, a common project of Bahçeşehir University s European Union Club, Youth Agenda Foundation and supported by Beyoğlu Municipality which take place at Beyoğlu Municipal Youth Center until the 10th of September Folk Heroes, common project of Bahçeşehir University s European Union Club and Youth Agenda Foundation supported by Beyoğlu Municipality has started at Beyoğlu Youth Center the 4th of September 2011 with the particpation of youngs from Turkey, Bulgaria, Lituania, Malta and Hungary. Youngs from these countries have found the opportuynity to know each other s countries with several interactive activities organised within the project. Each groups have presented their country and folk heroes with drama performances, competitions, simulations and workshops. Until the end of the project, the 10th of september, youngs will prepare a booklet about each countries folk heroes stories and countries traditional stories. Mayor Demircan who attaches an importance to youngs and youth projects since the beginning of his mandat, has visited the youngs during their activities sessions at Beyoğlu Municipal Youth Center. Mayor Demircan talked with them about Istanbul, Beyoğlu, youth and different issues, took information about the project and they have had cheerful moments. Youngs presented their special thanks to the Mayor during his visit and expressed their happiness. BEYO LU OCTOBER2011

4 4 BEYO LU CENTENARY BOOKS AT BEYOĞLU THE 5th ANTIQUARIAN BOOK FESTIVAL Beyoğlu Antiquarian Festival which is organised every year at Taksim Park, has opened its 5th edition this year to booklovers at Tepebaşı from September 5th through 18th. This year 72 Antiquarian Booksellers from different districts such as Kadıköy, Moda, Sarıyer, Ortaköy, Beyazıt, Şişli, Beyoğlu has joined the festival with very precious and rare collections. As every year, readers, renown intellectuals, writers, citizens has showned a very special attention to the festival. The festival in its fifth year, as every year it is the case, creates an opportunity for readers to discover many old precious books which connects the past to the present. These revues which have witnessed the history create new inspirations in our minds and the pictures wink to us from past times. Old banners, signboards, letters take their place in the archives of the collectors. Many prominent antiquarian booksellers offer for sale postcards, photographs in black and white, movie posters, precious books and special collections on the stands during the festival. The stock certificates from the early years of the Republic, the first encyclopedia that describes Istanbul, Ottoman s land title, notary public documents are some of the interesting documents of the festival. The old comic books have already taken their place on the shelves, original cinema posters of the 1950s, the Ottoman tiles, rugs, fabrics and patterns which decorates the books, counted as historical documents are exhibited. Antiquarian booklovers and writers, this year as well find the opportunity to acquire very precious, old documents and books during the festival. Demircan: We keep alive the tradition of the antiquarian booksellers Mayor of Beyoğlu Ahmet Misbah Demircan, at the opening ceremony, during his speech expressed, We keep alive the tradition of secondhand booksellers that feeds the entellectual life in Turkey. The second-hand booksellers deserve more. The second-hand bookselling is an important cultural service. The books are the important veins that gives life to Beyoğlu and our aim is to nourish these veins. Beyoğlu is not just a venue for entertainment, the books are the integral part of the identity of Beyoğlu. We welcome all Istanbulites to Beyoğlu Antiquarian Festival where the precious books are exhibited. Hızlan: The most valuable books are in the second-hand booksellers Doğan Hızlan who is one of the eminent intellectuals of Turkey expressed that whenever he needs any information, immediately had recourse to the second-hand booksellers. He says, Books and libraries have an important role in every person life. The books that we read today possess all a much more older source. These sources constitutes the base of the modern-day pieces. We should definitely research the basis of the books that we read. Culture is transferred from generation to generation through the books. 5 5 THE 4th INTERNATIONAL POETRY FESTIVAL HAS GATHERED POETRY LOVERS IN BEYOĞLU International Istanbul Poetry Festival which is realized in colaboration with Municipality of Beyoğlu has opened its doors to poetry lovers for the 4th time. During the opening ceremony, the Mayor of Beyoğlu Ahmet Misbah Demircan said Beyoğlu is such as a poetry which unites the classic and the modern. The festival brought together famous and important poets from Turkey and different countries. The 4th International Istanbul Poetry Festival has started with the opening ceremony which took place in Pera Museum. During the opening ceremony, the Mayor of Beyoğlu Ahmet Misbah Demircan expressed Beyoğlu is such as a poetry which unites the classic and the modern. Beyoğlu is a masterpiece with its architecture and social life. As the Mayor of Beyoğlu, I feel honoured to serve this district for the second term. We are working with a great passion to conserve the features that make Beyoğlu priviliged. And he said that he appreciated all efforts made during the festival and he thanked warmly the foreign poets who enlivened the festival. Besides Mayor Demircan, Istanbul Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism; Prof. Dr. Ahmet Emre Bilgili, intellectual and author; Doğan Hızlan, the director of the festival; Adnan Özer, poets and a large number of poetry lovers participated to the festival. The festival will be held till 17th of September It will welcome 24 foreign poets. This year s guest country is Macedonia. Within the scope of the festival, lots of events will take place in different cultural centers of Beyoğlu and Beyoğlu Municipal Youth Center. BEYO LU OCTOBER2011

6 6 BEYO LU 1st ISTANBUL FICTS FESTIVAL THAT UNITES SPORT AND ART HAS STARTED IN BEYOĞLU Beyoğlu Municipality welcomed the 1st Istanbul FICTS Festival with an opening ceremony that took place in Beyoğlu Municipal Youth Center in collaboration and coordination with FICTS ( Federation Internationale Cinema Television Sportifs). Within the scope of the festival which continued for 2 days, documentary films about sports, feature-lenght films around the olymic games theme met with the public. 1.Istanbul Ficts Film Festival took place from September 23th through 25th, 2011 in Beyoğlu, the center of culture, arts and sports and has started with the opening ceremony at Beyoğlu Youth Center with the hosting of Beyoğlu Municipality and coordination of FICTS. Mayor of Beyoğlu Ahmet Misbah Demircan, President of FICTS (Federation Internationale Cinema Television Sportifs) Franco Ascani, President of HIS (Sports for Everyone) Federation, Erdal Zorba, General Coordinator of the Festival Can Saraçoğlu, artist Caner Cindoruk, art and sports lovers participated to the opening ceremony. Demircan: A New Festival in Beyoğlu During the opening speech, Ahmet Misbah Demircan pointed out the different aspects of sport and said that, We all need sport for our body and soul health. This festival will emphasize the importance of sport for our both body and soul health, will also revitalize olympic soul and will underline the importance of sport in our lives once more. Demircan mentioned as well, This festival unites art and sport, so in this sense the festival is organised at the right place, at Beyoğlu, the center of culture and art of İstanbul. Ascani: The Festival Spread the Culture Of Sport President of FICTS (Federation Internationale Cinema Television Sportifs) Franco Ascani noted during his speech that the federation have 108 member countries and the aim of the Festival is to spread the culture of sport. Ascani also expressed I m delighted to be in Istanbul. After his speech, he presented to Mayor Ahmet Misbah Demircan a plaquet for his support to the Festival. 12 Films Screened During The Festival After the opening ceremony, some seminars were conducted on different themes of the Festival. Within the scope of the festival; films about sports, sports documentaries, featurelenght films, television programs, commercial films and olympic themed movies competed. The festival concluded with the program that took place in Hagia Irene Museum on Sunday evening, September 25th. The films that were placed in the competition will be rewarded and the best film will deserve to compete in the final phase which will be organized in Milano. BEYO LU OCTOBER2011

7 7 14th INTERNATIONAL 1001 DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL HAVE STARTED IN BEYOĞLU Beyoğlu Municipality hosts the 14th International Documentary Film Festival in collaboration with the Association of Documentary Filmmakers (BSB) with the contribution of the Ministry of Culture on Thursday, September 29. This year, 14th International 1001 Documentary Film Festival is organized with the theme of Confined Spaces/Confined Souls which will take place in Beyoğlu Municipal Youth Center with an opening ceremony. During the opening ceremony of the Documentary Film Festival Show Must Go On was screened which was about children squeezed in confined spaces that couldn t find a playground in Greece. Enza İkah, the musician from Congo who has a life as a film, is going to perform in the night. Demircan: This Festival will enlarge the Confined Spaces The press conference of the Festival was held in Beyoğlu at the Municipal Youth Center. Mayor of Beyoğlu, Ahmet Misbah Demircan, the President of Association of Documentary Filmmakers, Hasan Özgen and the board chairman of 14th International 1001 Documentary Film Festival; Mustafa Ünlü has answered the questions of the press members. Mayor of Beyoğlu who hosts this Festival for the 4th time has denoted during his speech that International 1001 Documentary Film Festival which has a speciality of being a unique festival realized in different continents simultaneously, has gained really an important place all around the world. Demircan also mentioned that this festival is the only platform that the documentary filmmakers from the East and the West can discuss freely. He said that If a country can t produce documentaries liberally, this means that the country is muted. Such a country is not able to think, make a sentence, understand and can t perceive the truth. I believe that through this festival our free spaces will increase. The obstacles in front of consideration, producing and expressing will disapear. Each of the docmantaries explains different people s life and I m sure it will enlarge the confined spaces and all the confined hearts will feel happy. Ünlü: It will be a Colourful Festival The Board Chairman of the 14th International 1001 Documentary Film Festival, Mustafa Ünlü said We have gathered the real stories in confined spaces, the relations between the manager-managed, majority-minority, male-female, adult-child, believerunbeliver, rest-immigrating, investor-worker in all over the world on the 14th year of the festival. The President of Association of Documentary Filmmakers; Hasan Özgen attracted attention to the major role that the International 1001 Documentary Film Festival play in intersocietal sharing, transfer of information-good manners and evaluating a common memory. Özgen mentioned that Today we should produce copyrighted works. The primary conditon for being able to get in touch with the broadcasting and distribution networks is to register the documantaries, in other words obtain the registration permit. The documentary cinema has not reached yet a sectoral structure. Documentary cinema is a cinema with a director without a producer. Documantaries for Children Within the scope of the Festival which will end on October the 3rd. There will be 70 film screenings, 23 of them from Turkey and 47 from abroad. These films can be watched for free in Beyoğlu Municipal Youth Center, French Cultural Institute of Istanbul, Nazım Hikmet Cultural Center and Beşiktaş Municipality Ortaköy Cultural Center. A new thematic section is launched for the 14th edition of the Festival, called Documentaries for Children, documentaries as Rotten Apple, The Game Must Go On, Enda s Day, The Dairymald and the film Her Son and Big Treasure Chest For Future Kids that consists of 12 films, 4 of them will be screened. The documanteries which were filmed for the children, at the age range of 7-15, by the directors all around the world and were inspired by the real life stories can be watched in Beyoğlu Municipal Youth Center and French Cultural Institute of Istanbul. 8 BODY PERCUSSION PERFOR- MANCE IN BEYOĞLU MUNICIPAL YOUTH CENTER The new venue for cultural and art events, Beyoğlu Municipal Youth Center welcomed KeKeÇa (Rythm Your Body) Body Music Group that use their hands, their feet, and their bodies as percussion instruments. The new venue for culture and art, Beyoğlu Municipal Youth Center, hosted a new event untitled KeKeÇa (Rythm Your Body) which is a Body Music Group that use their hands, their feet, and their bodies as percussion instruments. They have performed a fascinating performance at the Youth Center. Most famous body percussion soloist of the World, Keith Terry accompanied the group members Tugay Başar, Timuçin Gürer, Gökçe Gürçay, Ayşe Akarsu and Ezo Sunal. The group which participates to the International Body Music Festival for three years, have presented Turkish and World music by using their body as percussion instruments during one hour. The audience which also followed the rythm along the performance, watched the composition and the choreography with great attention. Famous Turkish singer Rafet El Roman and famous Turkish actor Keman Sunal s spouse, Gül Sünal were also the spectators of the performance. After this cheerful performance, the group announced that 5th International Body Music Festival which will take place in İstanbul, in 2012 BEYO LU OCTOBER2011
