1 4 PROVINcE OF MANITOBA INFORMATION OFFICE LEGISLATIVE BUILDING WINNIPEG MANITOBA Room Phone TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS DOWN, ACCIDENT BULLETIN SHOWS WINNIPEG - Traffic accidents in Manitoba for the first four months of 1947 were only 40% of last year's total for the same period, according to the accident bulletin for April, released by Safety Director W.T. Davies, Manitoba Department of Labor. However, while only two fatalities were due to traffic accidents in April, the accident bulletin points out that it is too early to gauge the current trend accurately. Industrial accidents are causing real concern, Mr. Davies states, as injuries and deaths both show an increase. Three persons were killed and 352 injured in April, as compared with no deaths and.293 injuries last month. Home accidents, due chiefly to falls and asphyxiation) resulted in nine deaths in April - four less than in March of this year. Fatalities due to general causes rose from five in March to 13 in April - six caused by falls and five others due to drowning and farearms. In all, 27 Manitobans lost their lives through accidents during the month of April. _ Words: 180 May 30th, 1947

2 ACCIDENT BULLETIN FOR The Month of APRIL/47 ANALYSIS The Accident Barometer is very unsteady at this time and it is difficult to accurately gauge the current trend. This, perhaps, is the time when suitable publicity would be most fruitful. The Annual Safety Week in Manitoba will provide amply opportunity for this purpose and it is to be hoped that every social, public and business organization will make it their business to promote SAFETY to the full extent of their resources. Traffic injuries are definitely less this month and the overall total to date shows a very marked improvement over the similar period for last year. In fact, we have had only 40% of last year's total for this period.. Industrial accidents continue to cause much concern. An increase is again recorded both as to deaths and injuries. Home accidents are leas but general accidents show a positive increase. These deaths under the general classification included six from falls, three from fire- _.irms and two from drowning. The aggregate deaths from accidents this year show a distinct improvement with 97 as against 111 last year to date, and it is to be hoped that this improvement will continue during the coming months and for the rest of the year. 5U.n.i1ARY OF ACCIDENTS April, 1947 March, 1947 April, 1946 Injured Killed Injured Killed Injured Killed Traffic 81 Industrial 352 Home General Comparison of Accidents Occurring from January 1st to April 30th Injured Killed Injured Killed Traffic Industrial HOMB General Prepared by: Accident 'Prevention Branch, Department of Labor, PROVINCE OF MANITOBA.
