2 Outline CORE (Cognitive Radio Trial Environment) project Objectives CORE trial environment CORE2 project proposal Objectives Work packages and tasks WP participation WP plans
3 CORE project objectives ( ) Develop a trial environment for cognitive technologies in wireless communication. Define an interface between cognitive solutions and cognitive networks or devices. Research and develop cognitive solutions for selected use cases. Verify the performance of the cognitive solutions, using the trial environment and the open interface. Clarify the expected changes in the business environment, arising from cognitive technologies. Explore models for the successful regulation, standardization, and commercialization of cognitive solutions and the promotion of new business.
4 CORE trial environment ( ) Priority user 1 Core Client User 2 Core Client User n Core Client CWC s WARP network LTE BS 2 LTE BS 3 User 1 Core Client LTE BS 1 Wi-Fi 1 Centria s core network Cognitive Manager Internet Measurement server VTT s core network QMCP Receiver Cognitive API QMCP Receiver/ Controller Cognitive Engine Wi-Fi 2 Home Agent
5 CORE2 project objectives ( ) Enhance the cognitive radio trial environments from CORE project and trial new spectrum sharing concepts based on CRS technology using the trial environments with a particular focus on Authorised Shared Access (ASA) Active Antenna System (AAS) concept Develop cognitive engines for spectrum sharing and AAS to improve the resource use of future mobile communication systems More emphasis on research part Even ideas that cannot be trialed will be researched Selected and implementable research ideas (new CEs, new use cases) will be trialed
6 CORE2 project objectives ( ) Research the impact of spectrum sharing with CRS on the value co-creation and co-capture, and creation of competitive advantages, through the business models and ecosystems of the key stakeholders in the mobile broadband business. Research future spectrum demand, value of spectrum, stakeholder strategies, and technology maturity in the paradigm shift regarding spectrum sharing regulation. Influence the international spectrum regulation to include spectrum sharing with CRS technology and follow the relevant CRS related standardization activities.

9 WP2 Business, regulation and standardisation Task 2.1 Business studies What is the role/impact/benefit of spectrum sharing and how it might change within the mobile broadband? How the value of shared spectrum could be defined and how it emerges within the mobile broadband? How spectrum sharing affects collaboration and competition within the mobile broadband ecosystem? What are the competitive advantages and the business models of the key ecosystem players and how they emerge in the mobile broadband business?
10 WP2 Business, regulation and standardisation Task 2.2 Regulation and standardization What are the future spectrum demand, stakeholder strategies, and technology maturity in the paradigm shift regarding spectrum sharing regulation? How to influence the international spectrum regulation to include spectrum sharing with CRS technology? What is happening in relevant CRS related standardization activities? Chairmanship of CRS studies at ITU-R WP5A Following of relevant CRS related regulatory activities in different regulatory bodies with an emphasis on the ASA concept. Following of relevant CRS related standardization activities, mainly in the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in its technical committee on Reconfigurable Radio Systems (RRS).
11 WP3 Cognitive radio system research General topic: Spectrum sharing in more practical arrangements Continuum of CORE research on cognitive engine towards more realistic use cases on spectrum sharing with emphasis on authorised shared access (ASA)/licensed shared access (LSA) Research on active antenna systems to optimise resource use New ideas from research are fed into trials Even ideas that cannot be trialed will be researched Selected and implementable research ideas will be trialed
12 WP4 Trial environments Modern CORE trial environment will be exploited to new business potentials: Authorised Shared Access (ASA) Active Antenna Systems (AAS) Vital elements: CENTRIA s field trial solution for cellular systems VTT s cognitive engine CWC s WARP research platform Results of parallel industry projects Core Client Priority user 1 User 2 Core Client LTE BS 2 LTE BS 3 User n Core Client CWC s WARP network User 1 LTE BS 1 Core Client Wi-Fi 1 Centria s core network Cognitive Manager Internet Measurement server VTT s core network QMCP Receiver Cognitive API QMCP Receiver/ Controller Cognitive Engine Wi-Fi 2 Home Agent
