Overview 1.1 Master Programs The program MSc Economics is a general economics master program with interdisciplinary structure (economics combined with pol. science, bus. admin., or sociology) and emphasis on European issues. Five different specializations are offered: European Political Economy European Labour Markets and Innovation European Finance European Social Security and Health Systems Empirical Analysis 2

3 As a sixth variant the double degree program MSc Economics (European Economic Integration) is offered (jointly with the University of Warsaw and the University of Bergamo). The program MA International Economics and Public Policy is a joint master program with the department of political science: The program MSc Survey Statistics is a research-oriented master program in survey statistics (jointly offered with FU Berlin and Universität Bamberg): 3

4 1.2 General Profile duration of program: 2 years one semester can be spent abroad (DAAD scholarship holders: DAAD s agreement is required) Double degree option for the MSc Economics (in cooperation with the University of Warsaw and the University of Bergamo) language of instruction: English (exception: MSc Survey Statistics) preparatory courses: Mathematics for Economists and Introductory Statistics academic mentoring 4

5 1.3 Program Structure The master programs are decomposed into modules. Most modules last one semester, few modules last two semesters. All modules have a weight of 10 credit points (CP); in German: Leistungspunkte (LP). The only exception is the master thesis (30 CP). In total, 120 CP must be completed. When the examination of a 10-CP-module is passed, the grade has a weight of 10/120 (that is, 1/12) in the overall grade of the program. 5

8 The modules of the first semester Advanced Microeconomics Advanced Macroeconomics Econometrics are compulsory modules. During the second and third semester the students can choose among different options. For the module container Economics: Core one of the following modules can be selected: Incentives in Organizations and Innovation Political Economics Ökonomik des Wohlfahrtsstaates Monetary Policy and the EMU Elements of Statistics and Econometrics 8

9 For the module container Economic Methods one of the following modules can be selected: Elements of Statistics and Econometrics Applied Microeconometrics Using Stata Monte Carlo Simulation Methods Applied Time Series and Financial Econometrics Multivariate Statistics Statistical Modelling Experimental Design 9

10 For the module container Economics of European Integration one of the following modules can be selected: European and World Trade European Environmental Economics European Energy Economics International Labour Markets Monetary Policy and the EMU For the module container Economic Analysis one of the following modules can be selected: Industrial Organization Empirical Labour Economics Health Economics Advanced Topics in Economic Analysis or one of the previously listed modules that has not been chosen for some other module container 10

11 For the module container Elective any of the previously listed modules can be selected as long as it has not been selected for some other module container. Also modules offered by selected other departments can be chosen. Two addtional modules (20 CP) can be chosen that do not count for the overall grade but, if you want, can be listed in the diploma. When you have completed the three compulsory modules, for each module container one appropriate module, and the master thesis, you will be awarded the degree M.Sc. Economics. 11

Economics (European Finance), then for the module containers additional restrictions must be adhered to. 12

22 6. Curriculum During the first semester of the MSc Economics the modules Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomicss, and Econometrics must be chosen. During the second and third semester there is a high degree of flexibility. 22

24 7. Support Each student has a professor as academic mentor. The mentoring relationship lasts throughout the entire course of the master program. The mentor s main task is to help the students with their academic planning. However, the mentor can also be contacted in case of serious other problems or worries.
