NETWORKING and SUPPORT GROUPS Wendy Kingston Human Resources Manager Medical Staff Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Why am I up here? Because I firmly believe in the positives and strengths that can come from a group with a common purpose Because I have sat where you are for many a conference and at some point you have to actively support what you believe in Because I am not very good at saying no!
How did I get to be here 1994 Locum Recruitment Officer Norfolk and Norwich Hospital No prior knowledge of medical staffing Became hooked and wanted to learn as much as possible
1996 Medical Recruitment Officer North Hampshire Hospital Rich learning opportunity Departments of Medical Staffing and Postgraduate Education under one manager and shared offices Within the Wessex Deanery with the Dean Dr Hugh Platt, our past president, supporting the regional Medical Staffing Group Introduction to how personally useful such a group can be and how influential could be in regional and national issues Members of the group very pro active two became NAMPS executives
1998 Postgraduate and Medical Personnel Manager - North Hampshire Hospital Continued learning had equipped me for the next promotion Experience of passing on my acquired knowledge to my replacement Much valued knowledge of postgraduate education and training Member of the regional Postgraduate Centre Managers group
2003 back to Norfolk and Norwich Hospital for current role NAMPS, Wessex support groups and networking fundamental to my acquisition of knowledge I could phone a friend to discuss an issue or ask for advice Colleagues to whom you could turn to in confidence when you needed to let off steam to someone who would understand
East of England Experience Medical Personnel Group in existence but in danger of folding as organiser moved on and no successor had come forward Discussed with the Deanery Scope/NHS Partners contact the possibility of them supporting the group 2004 sees me in the chair
Terms of reference Open to anyone who has an interest in Medical Personnel issues Quarterly meetings Business agenda in morning Topical presentation by invited speaker in afternoon
Attendees Regular attendance of 30 per meeting Medical Staffing Managers/Officers HR Managers with Medical Staffing responsibilities Deanery representatives SHA representatives
What we achieve Associate Dean update on Deanery matters Discussion on recent national requirements to share how each Trust is managing them Sharing of best practice and knowledge Update on topical issues with opportunity to ask questions to those directly involved Confidential and safe environment for frank discussion Who our colleagues in the region are Collective agreement that we can call on each other for support
Example of guest speakers NHS Employers Pay Protection New Jnr Drs Contract GMC PLAB Revalidation MMC leads F1 Recruitment Recruitment/selection StRs Boarder and Immigration Agency Work Permits Sponsorship BMA Banding issues Relocation expenses
What individuals gain -1 Experience of colleagues who have been in post for a while Knowing you are not alone there are colleagues out there feeling as frustrated on occasions as you are Informed presentations pay protection saved Trust s Working alone in Medical Staffing for 7 months discovering the group has been a real relief Awareness of how other trusts in the region are handling issues Beneficial outcomes and improved understanding from open discussions ions with Deanery representatives about joint processes
What individuals gain - 2 Being part of the group is essential for continued development of self. Able to pass the information onto the team and enhance their knowledge. Working towards a consistent approach across the region understanding how other Trusts interpret T&Cs Colleagues sharing policies and procedures saves valuable time ESR Deanery interface same understanding gained via 2 meetings would have taken months via individual contacts
Deanery Feedback Having the forum brings benefits to the : Deanery Group Trainees Trainers and ultimately patient care Recent PMETB visit highlighted the groups participation with the Deanery recruitment team as an example of good practice
Key areas for the Deanery Networking and meeting key stakeholders Shared understanding of issues and timetables Open discussion over issues and problems Means of feedback to Deanery and vice versa and identifying actions to resolve issues Forum for shared discussion over new developments eg Deanery interface/immigration/doctors contracts Opportunity to update the group on other related aspects of Deanery work and give a sense of the bigger picture Opportunity to participate in CPD through invited speakers
Must Haves Someone willing to organise and chair Reliable venue accessible to all Balance of members from different backgrounds who will stimulate meaningful discussion Volunteers to take the minutes Funding for lunch not essential but such a welcome change and because we re worth it
Become part of a network National NAMPS Regional/local If you don t t belong to a group find out whether there is one in your locality If you don t t have one start one!
