2 School counselors work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, students, parents, and the community to provide a comprehensive guidance program that is an integral and essential part of the total educational process.

Change agents who impact school climate The school s first base for mental health triage Educators teaching parents and students on an enormous range of issues spanning academic, career and personal-social development Consultants for teachers and administrators on developmental issues Attuned adults practiced in being present for children and teens at critical times without sacrificing the momentum of instruction for other students Able to provide one of the few private and emotionally safe settings in the very public arena of our schools

5 The Efforts of Our Counselors, Combined with Effective Programming and a Genuine Fidelity of Implementation, Can.. Increase test scores Improve student grades Affect numerous data elements academics, attendance, bullying, retentions and more Increase the relevance of school for students through career planning and goal setting

6 Counselors Are Reshaping Their Profession in This Time of Enormous Change For instance, they now have requirements for evidence-based practices Through recent neuropsychological discoveries counselors have gained new knowledge of how the brain works Our daily dependence on the growing digital world is increasing the likelihood of interpersonal isolation The effects of a struggling economy that are forcing families and institutions to re-evaluate their expenditure of time, energy, and money

7 The Big Picture for Every Counselor The developmental needs, interests, and goals of each student are addressed in the areas of: academic growth personal-social skills educational and career decision making community involvement to assist all students in acquiring the necessary skills, attitudes, and knowledge to become productive citizens in our diverse society.

8 Academics Counselors collaborate with teachers, parents, school psychologists, speech and language pathologists, exceptional student educational coordinators, and administrators to assist students in learning more effectively and efficiently They Gather, analyze, and interpret educational data and psychological records to identify strengths and weaknesses for academic improvement

9 Academics continued Counselors conduct Student Success Skills training to enhance student performance and improve attitudes toward school They implement academic improvement programs such as peer and cross-age tutoring, mentoring, and remedial activities to address individual student needs and competencies Counselors apply progress monitoring strategies to provide effective interventions to increase student achievement

10 Personal-Social Skills Counselors facilitate small and large group guidance activities to encourage students to develop the needed skills to interact and communicate effectively with others They implement prevention programs and other student support services to promote positive school climates Counselors assist students in learning to recognize cause and effect of behavior and to make responsible choices

11 Personal-Social Skills continued Counselors support character education to assist students in building positive feelings toward themselves and others and to respect and value diversity Counselors teach conflict resolution and coping skills needed to deal with life s challenges and enhance problem-solving skills They provide assistance with crisis management and referral to community resources

12 Career Counselors provide career infused education to develop career awareness and increase positive feelings and understanding of the relationship between educational achievement and career planning They assist students in exploring and applying the knowledge of their personal interests, abilities, and values toward the choosing and planning their postsecondary education and/or career path They teach the skills to locate, evaluate, and interpret career information

18 Mission Statement The Student Development Plan, based on National Standards, serves to provide every student in Palm Beach County with the academic, personal/social and career competencies necessary for life-long success.

21 To Implement the Student Development Plan, the School Counselor: Coordinates guidance services provided to all students Facilitates the delivery of activities aligned with the required student competencies Manages the comprehensive developmental guidance program Collects data to assess measurable student outcomes

22 Evidence of Success M.E.A.S.U.R.E. (Goal Setting/Action Plan) Mission, Elements, Analyze, Stakeholders Unite, Re-Analyze, Educate Counselors conduct a needs assessment based on the analysis of data. Counselors set goals for each domain with the principal and staff based on School Improvement Plan. Counselors develop and implement an action plan. Counselors submit the action plan to the Department of Supplemental Educational Services.
