Most Common Disposal Method To The Dump Syndrome Landfills: Barometers of all industry C&D land fills 6 total in Oklahoma, as of 1994 APAC-East Quarry Landfill (918) Creek County Landfill (918) MSW land fills APPLYING IT TO TULSA 9
APPLYING IT TO TULSA C&D waste Tulsans CAN divert from landfills Asphalt shingles Concrete, brick and pavers Dimensional lumber Scrap metal Carpet? Sort of. Interface FLOR has a national take-back program. Contact Jim for details: (918) C&D Recycling Resources APAC-Oklahoma, Inc. (918) Harley Hollan,, Del Lankford (918) American Waste, Tom Hill (918) There are a ton of scrap metal recycling facilities to choose from. There are probably others make a call and ask! 10
APPLYING IT TO TULSA C&D waste Tulsans CAN NOT divert Most carpet unless you ship to Little Rock or Dallas Fiberglass insulation Drywall, plaster, gypsum (on individual basis only) There are resources available in other states to handle these items but not in Tulsa at this time Keep asking your waste management providers to offer solutions and alternatives to the landfill. 11

LESSONS LEARNED LESSONS LEARNED Lessons Learned from OBGREEN (OBGREEN: name of my residential retrofit project) 1. We diverted over 4,000 pounds of metal 2. We reused 90% of all framing 3. We reused 75% of all hardwood flooring 4. We salvaged a 200ft wood fence that looked on the brink 5. Chose durable, recycled content in building materials that we could afford 6. Researched/compared every product, looking locally first 7. We re going to reuse parts of the current driveway to make a permeable patio and paths throughout the landscape 13
LESSONS LEARNED Lessons Learned from OBGREEN (OBGREEN: name of my residential retrofit project) 1. Don t t settle for the Status Quo Syndrome be vigilant 2. Get buy in from top management with the companies you intend on using for waste management hauler and processing facility 3. Conduct a job site walkthrough with service provider 4. Accountability is KING 5. Knowledge is power 6. When No is good 7. Ask for signed affidavits Trust and Verify People remember 10% of what they read, but 80% of what they experience. --William Glasser 14

Commercial Construction Waste Management Lorrie A. Hoefling, LEED AP, GAC, HCS LLC. 17
COMMERCIAL CONSTRUCTION WASTE The First R: Consider how to lower the amount you have to deal with in the first place. This is done by Proper estimating of material quantities Lots of waste can be saved Process begins as early as the initial design Charrette 18
CONSTRUCTION WASTE RECYCLING Reduce construction waste in landfills Construction and demolition waste in the US typically amounts to more than 45% of the typical municipal waste stream Massachusetts recently banned construction waste in land fills 19
CONSTRUCTION WASTE RECYCLING Divert construction, demolition, and land clearing debris from landfill disposal Redirect recyclable material back to the manufacturing process Determine which facilities recycle specific materials It can help reduce disposal costs and efficient use of materials Operations Y? N Construction Waste Management MRc2.1 & MRc2.2 Recycle 50% of construction waste Recycle an additional 25% of construction waste 20
CONSTRUCTION WASTE RECYCLING Centralized cutting area makes it easier to recycle waste Multiple bins labeled from side and above When you are on a dense site one dumpster is good investigate co-mingling as an option 21
CONSTRUCTION WASTE RECYCLING Materials to be Recycled* Land clearing debris Clean dimensional wood Plywood, OSB, & particle board Concrete Asphaltic concrete Concrete masonry units (CMUs) Bricks Rigid foam insulation Asphalt shingles Paint Window glass Carpet & carpet pad Plastic film Polystyrene (HDPE) Gypsum wallboard Cardboard, paper & packaging *These are C&D items that are being recycled throughout the United States, not necessarily in Tulsa. Contact the M.e.t or your local recycling facilities to see what can be diverted from the landfill through recycling. M.e.t. phone:
CONSTRUCTION WASTE RECYCLING Strategies Develop and implement a waste management plan, quantifying material diversion by weight. This will be needed for LEED credit Use incentives such as free food to encourage waste recycling 23
CONSTRUCTION WASTE RECYCLING Strategies Add a special conditions clause to incorporate into subcontracts with a list of materials for recycling Be direct with subcontractors - make them accountable for recycling 24
CONSTRUCTION WASTE RECYCLING Strategies Talk to vendors about not using palettes or set up plan to return the palettes Steel container can be located in the plan plumbing and other trades that employ metal items can be dumped into there also 25
Building Deconstruction or Unbuilding environmentally preferable way to save and reuse building materials, preserve resources and avoid waste Reclamation Station, LLC.
Purpose: WHY UNBUILDING? Save landfill space Retain embodied energy Save items which are no longer made Provide jobs Use materials locally 27
Determine Level of Involvement Visual survey Permits Hazardous Materials Salvage potential Reusable Materials YOU NEED A PLAN 28
WHAT CAN BE SALVAGED? Flooring Doors Hardware Windows Sinks, Tubs Staircases Banisters Newel posts Plumbing fixtures Lumber Lighting fixtures Cabinets Bricks Fret work Fences Old garden items 29

City of San José CASE STUDY #1 Construction & Demolition Diversion Deposit Program (CDDD); Stephen Bantillo,, Program Manager CDDD is San José é s s incentive program to encourage the recovery of C&D debris San José will collect a deposit and fully refund it if the C&D debris is diverted from burial in the landfill 1. Pay Your Deposit 2. Recover/Recycle Your C&D Debris 3. Apply For a CDDD Refund Used $750,000 in seed grants from industry to kick-start the program 7,000 deposits per year $15,000,000 in unclaimed refunds in a liability account 31
The Reuse People CASE STUDY #2 Mission: to reduce the solid waste stream and change the way to built environment is renewed by salvaging building materials and distributing for reuse. Accomplished through a few integrated programs: 1. Sales and distribution of materials through The ReUse People (TRP) retail-warehouses and those of TRP partner retail-warehouses. 2. Contractor training, marketing, deconstruction project oversight and the administration of tax deductible donations in all TRP regions. 3. The ReUse Institute (TRI) providing basic deconstruction training for the un and underemployed 32
