1 Associate Degree Nursing Program Advisory Committee Meeting Wednesday, May 6, :00-9:30 AM, IC 1037 Present: Linda Barkoozis, Lynn Bell, Bob Berry, Margaret Delaney, Lynn Engelmann, Dilyss Gallyot, Deb Jeffay, Donna Perchatsch, Jim Ryan, Pattie Skriba, Anne Stezowski, Karen Solt, Maureen Waller. Welcome - Dr. Lynn Engelmann Introductions Approval of Minutes Motion to accept as presented Jim Ryan. Seconded Deb Jeffay. Update of LPN Program Transition Course LPN to ADN NLNAC Fall approval / accreditation without areas needing improvement 100% pass rate. Low attrition, 37 out of 40 graduated Engelmann discussed transition course, 5 credit hours. Approximately 20 LPN students will be taken in this fall. Bridge course will be into 2 nd level ADN Program; transition N 2109, N 2110 Fall, 2 Spring courses N 2201, N 2202, N 2110 Fall or Spring. Deb Jeffay, 6 applications from LPN and 2 from outside good faith effort will be made to accept as many PN students as possible, but limitations based on clinical site availability and faculty. Need transition for new faculty; invitation to members to address specific issues for new faculty orientation and support. Advisory committee meeting minutes kw 05/06/09 1 of 6
2 New Health Science Center Karen Scott discussed program transition to new facility moved in by summer term May 26 th Sciences also in by this time Engelmann - 3 laboratories, plans for human patient simulators, tech ready. Solt - Carl Perkins Grant; if all goes as planned, sites funds will be designated to purchase state of the art Sim mang. Fall Alumni Reunion Benedictine Program Update Gallyot - November 13, reception and reunion in the new Health Sciences Center. Margaret - 2 cohorts - COD and tuition teaching. 16 COD 06 cohorts full for next 2 years. 30 students per cohort initially for the COD cohorts. 2F or 2E will be available for teaching. Students are doing very well in the program. Engelmann - 40 December graduates from Collaborative efforts were excellent. Masters prepared nurses for hospitals, primarily Edwards were teaching. Would like to continue those collaborators efforts and include these members in a summer orientation / faculty development opportunity. Gallyot - positive experience for collaborators. Engelmann - preparation needed; in response to that need Dr. Caputi developed materials in the classroom which are available for use as a starting ground graduates for this May Increased # of students admitted for Fall Advisory committee meeting minutes kw 05/06/09 2 of 6
3 (continued) Program Update NLNA Accreditation Med-Surg I and Med Surg 4 courses may be the areas in need of clinical placement assistance. Admitted students had a cut-off of 3.4 GPA. HESI / Reach was used in the past as a preadmission test. NLN Pax RN will be used in the future. Rubric used for admissions highlighted admissions committee and faculty identifying students at risk on re-entry into the program. Faculty working on success plan from admission to graduation. Berry - letter, committee meeting addressing post areas of concern and the students plan for improvement. Students taking pharmacology, skills review and other specific coursework / resources based on needs identified. Students take ownership. Jeffay - would like courses / process from admission committee, positive responses from students. Recently received word that we were not approved; 5 of 7 standards were positive; 2 areas of concern that are being addressed. Skewed variables may have played a role. MSN faculty only will be in the lab working with a consultant. Ryan - what are the implications Engelmann - past, we were not accredited when partnerships ADN - BSN transition courses. One student interviewed in military position that stipulated accredited program. North Central accredited. State Board of Nursing accredited. Advisory committee meeting minutes kw 05/06/09 3 of 6
4 (continued) NLNA Accreditation Agency Updates - Lynn Bell Berry - RN to MSN at Elmhurst College. RN to MSN at Loyola University. Jeffay received calls for concerns about not being accredited by NLNAC. A faculty member who said we were not accredited and the students should be concerned. R/T accreditation; where should these calls go if they are beyond Jeffay s review. Ryan - also want to know how to curb poor information. Solt - we will be more proactive with our communication; this has been worked on. Barkoozis - clarifying with the students. Perchatsch - has not impacted or hold anyone back in her class that she is aware of. Dealing with H1N1 and anxious parents. Enjoy having the students in N 1207; good reports from students as well. Anne Stezowski (Elmhurst) Joann Wagner in a different position. Having ICRISP system consolidating units and restructuring, census is decreasing. Increased focus on outpatient treatment. Engelmann - options for placement and clinical sites. Outpatient care. Stezowski - Immediate care may be an option for students; will decide among administration. New hospital - on schedule for 2011; rehab projects within the current hospital as well. Reimbursements are down due to decrease # of patients with increased hiring of RNs has slowed down, hired 3 of 4 COD graduates (very positive feedback). PCT who moved up to RN position. 6 (continued) Anne Stezowski (Elmhurst) Employee Survey Moderate Feedback Unable to say how many will be hired, 3 positions posted. Berry - very difficult to find RN positions. Jeffay - 3 level tier of PCTs with Good Sam. Patricia - process laid out of 3 different levels and experiences PEP - PCA enrichment program. 1 st level - no CNA 2 nd level - CNA 3 rd level - enhanced CNA / casestudy not all are nursing students. Jeffay - help recruit high school students as they only need to be 16 years of age. Engelmann - possibility of links to hospital. Patricia - residency program restructured, med-surg employed. 68 new grads on waiting list, anticipate hiring new graduates. Waller - 20 of 40 December 2008 graduates still unable to find jobs. Engelmann - accountability legality of RNs holding PCT positions. Patricia - need to be in positions where their skills can continue and be honored. Trends in hiring decreased opportunities for volunteering. Link will be sent out via , please take time to give feedback or forward on to those who evaluate graduates.
