The Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies is a new General Plan within the existing Bachelor of Arts Degree Program in the Faculty of Arts and Science. The Liberal Studies program is aligned with growing recognition of the value of a liberal arts education with its focus on skills such as critical thinking and communication, and is designed to provide students with an integrated liberal studies education, structured around modes of critical thought, and focused on breadth rather than specialization. It also responds to increasing demand from undergraduates for a program that will prepare them for work in the 21st-century, in jobs that may not yet exist but that will require them to have the transferable skills that can be gained through an interdisciplinary approach to intellectual inquiry, argument and analysis. Last Revised: November 03, 2015 Page 1 of 22 Page 8 of 75

9 The BA in Liberal Studies will start with a required foundational course, LIBS 100, which will introduce students to approaches, methodologies and fundamental questions in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Students will then be required to select courses from each of the four modes of critical thought: scientific inquiry and reasoning, insights into contemporary society and culture, critical perspectives on history, and academic writing. Finally, a required capstone course, LIBS 300, will enable students to draw on and synthesize their learning using a collaborative, project-based approach. By fostering an interdisciplinary approach to intellectual inquiry, argument and analysis, the BA in Liberal Studies will prepare students for more in-depth study in a specific field or to enter a professional program such as law, as well as provide them with a strong comprehensive educational foundation and the adaptable skills for any career path or life activity. The BA General in Liberal Studies is being developed as an online program to attract new, distance students to Queen s. It will be offered through the Continuing and Distance Studies unit (CDS) in Arts and Science, using existing administrative structures and infrastructure, and following the Faculty s well-established practices for high quality online learning. Almost all of the courses that will contribute to the Liberal Studies Plan are already offered online through CDS; by drawing these courses into a coherent, yet flexible Plan with critical foundational and capstone LIBS courses and a strong academic rationale, the Faculty of Arts and Science can build on its existing strengths and play a role in meeting the needs of the distance community. The development of the concept of the Liberal Studies Plan, has involved broad consultation with colleagues across the Faculty of Arts and Science. A working group comprising faculty members from History, Philosophy, Physics, and Languages, Literatures and Cultures developed the plan, the framework and learning outcomes of which have been approved by all departments whose courses are included in the plan as options. The Plan will be offered by the Department of History in partnership with a wide range of departments in the faculty, drawing on their individual academic strengths and benefitting from the expertise and experience of faculty members in different areas. We believe it will attract students of the same exceptional quality as we find in the constituent departments on campus, and will expand the University s community of learners to those not physically present on campus. The BA in Liberal Studies will uphold Queen s values of intellectual integrity and freedom of inquiry and the exchange of ideas, while providing greater access to students from diverse backgrounds through the online delivery format. The structure of the BA in Liberal Studies is consistent with the Faculty of Arts and Science policy for BA General Plans. The Plan is made up of 30.0 units of specified core and option degree-credit courses, which are combined with electives to complete the 90.0-unit degree program. The BA in Liberal Studies will only be available for admission through distance studies since we do not admit on-campus students to 3-year General degrees. Consistent with our current policies, we will allow on-campus students to graduate with this degree if they are unable to complete their Honours program and have met all the requirements for the Liberal Studies Plan. 10 Part B Evaluation Criteria Part B is to be completed by the Unit/Faculty. In accordance with Queen s University Quality Assurance Processes (QUQAPs), the criteria should be regarded as the minimum criteria upon which the new program submission will be assessed. Further information can be found in the QUQAPs Guide. 1. Introduction 1.1 Describe how the Program is consistent with the University s mission and values as well as the academic goals of the Faculty(ies) and Unit(s). In its focus on the student learning experience, the 2011 Academic Plan emphasizes the need for the institution to develop and nurture the fundamental academic skills on which inquiry-based learning depends: critical reading, effective writing and communication, numeracy, inquiry, critical thinking, problem solving, information literacy, academic integrity, effective collaboration, intercultural literacy. Further, the Academic Plan highlights the importance of providing inter and multiple disciplinary opportunities for students to develop diverse approaches, methods and perspectives. The BA in Liberal Studies responds to these recommendations by providing a systematic framework within which to develop fundamental academic skills, provide interdisciplinary experiences through new foundational and capstone courses to explore the relationships and interconnectedness among the sciences, social sciences and humanities, and select from a wide range of multidisciplinary experiences to contextual and enrich their learning. Writing skills will be fostered though the required Academic Writing component, one of the four modes of critical thought that make up the degree plan. In addition, the Academic Plan emphasizes the role that peer interaction plays in fostering deep learning. Following the established quality standards for online course design in Arts and Science, all online courses include collaborative group activities and peer interaction, regardless of discipline. In this way a learning community is established regardless of the physical location of individual students. 1.2 List the Objectives of the Program (or Programs) and specify the anticipated learning outcomes and career paths [Refer to Undergraduate Degree Level Expectations (UDLEs, p.31 of QUQAPs] The primary objectives of the BA in Liberal Studies are to provide an integrated liberal arts education focused on transferable skills such as critical inquiry, problem solving and collaboration, and to attract new distance students to Queen s University. Cumulative learning outcomes acquired through successful completion of the core, option and elective courses that comprise the degree program map on to the Undergraduate Degree Level Expectations in the following way: Depth and Breadth of Knowledge On successful completion of the BA General in Liberal Studies, students will be able to: identify foundational concepts from a range of disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, and natural and physical sciences; describe the connections among the disciplines; discuss the process of development of intellectual thought over human history. 11 Knowledge of Methodologies On successful completion of the BA General in Liberal Studies, students will be able to: identify the primary methods of inquiry in a range of disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, and natural and physical sciences; select the appropriate methodologies to critically evaluate historical events, societies and their artefacts. Application of Knowledge On successful completion of the BA General in Liberal Studies, students will be able to: critically evaluate historical events, societies and their artefacts using appropriate methodologies; construct multidisciplinary knowledge, individually and in collaboration with peers, that addresses the common topic of inquiry; demonstrate problem-solving skills, habits of mind or ways of thinking when approaching problems. Communication Skills On successful completion of the BA General in Liberal Studies, students will be able to: communicate information, arguments, and analyses accurately and reliably to a range of audiences. Awareness of Limits of Knowledge On successful completion of the BA General in Liberal Studies, students will be able to: identify gaps between foundational concepts from humanities, social sciences, and natural and physical sciences and the shortcomings of each. Autonomy and Professional Capacity On successful completion of the BA General in Liberal Studies, students will be able to: construct multidisciplinary knowledge, individually and in collaboration with peers, that addresses the common topic of inquiry; communicate information, arguments, and analyses accurately and reliably to a range of audiences. The program is not aimed at a particular career path but will instead provide a broad liberal arts education that can support any number of career endeavours that involve writing, critical thinking, and synthesizing of information. Graduates will have the transferable skills to be successful in a variety of areas, including careers in government, education, and business. The program may also afford students the opportunity to ladder the credential into a second degree or certification that relates directly to particular career or professional training such as law. In a January 2014 report compiled by the Association of American Colleges and Universities and the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems, How Liberal Arts and Sciences Majors Fare in Employment, the authors examined US census data and concluded that studies in liberal arts fields can and [do] lead to successful and remunerative careers in a wide array of professions. 1.3 Explain how the objectives will be achieved (e.g. course work, teaching and research seminars, independent research, laboratory and technical training, internships, practica, major research papers, and thesis) The objectives of the BA in Liberal Studies will be achieved through online courses designed using best practices for active learning. Engaging students in active learning increases their knowledge of content and promotes critical thinking and problem-solving abilities while instilling a sense of belonging to the learning community, increasing communication with the instructor, and enhancing student persistence in online courses. Core and option courses in the Liberal Studies plan will provide opportunities for students to share Last Revised: November 03, 2015 Page 4 of 22 Page 11 of 75

12 their work with their peers, and to engage in activities such as debates. In the capstone LIBS 300 course, students will complete a collaborative group research project. 1.4 Address the appropriateness of the proposed nomenclature (e.g., BAH, BSCH [degree programs only]. The designation of the program as a Bachelor of Arts is appropriate since the plan is founded on an arts and humanities-based education, rather than on the natural and physical sciences (BSC). BA indicates that its learning outcomes are consistent with the degree-level expectations of a three-year program (in contrast to the four-year BAH). 2. Program Regulations 2.1 Admission Standards - Provide the Program s admission standards, including degree, diploma or certificate and course requirements and any other specific standards with reference to learning outcomes and expectations of the Program (e.g. Grade 12, undergraduate degree, etc.). If applicable, indicate policies/procedures to encourage applications from qualified under-represented groups (e.g. Aboriginal people, visible minorities or persons with disabilities). Admissions standards for the BA Liberal Studies are the same for the BAH degree at Queens, as specified in the Faculty of Arts and Science Admission Regulations 2 to 5. For graduates with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma: minimum overall 75% average on six 4U and 4M courses, including ENG4U and no more than three 4M courses. These standards are the same as for admission to other BA General programs offered online in the Faculty (BAs in English, History, Psychology and Global Development Studies). 2.2 Language Requirements Please specify the Program s English language requirement, including, if applicable, required English as a Second Language Assessment scores. The English language requirements for the BA Liberal Studies are the same as for all Faculty of Arts and Science degree programs, and are articulated in the Faculty s Admission Regulation Program Structure and Requirements Describe the Program under the following headings (where applicable) 3.1 General Program Requirements Describe the program duration and rationale, total number of courses, examination, etc. The structure of the BA in Liberal Studies is consistent with the Faculty of Arts and Science policy for BA General Plans. The Plan is made up of 30.0 units of specified core, option, and supporting degree-credit courses, which are combined with electives to complete the 90.0-unit degree program. In addition to 9.0 units of required courses (LIB 100 and LIBS 300), students will select option courses from each of four modes of critical thought: (1) 6.0 units from Scientific Inquiry and Reasoning (e.g. Math, Biology, Computing, Psychology, etc.); (2) 6.0 units from Insights into Contemporary Society and Culture (e.g. Film, Sociology, Philosophy, etc.); (3) 6.0 units from Critical Perspectives on History (e.g. History, Religious Studies, Classics, etc.); and (4) 3.0 units from Academic Writing (Writing courses). The balance of the degree program will be freely chosen electives. 3.2 Course Requirements In Table 1 below, list core (required) courses, optional courses (e.g. select X from the following list) and elective courses (indicate level and disciplines). Distance studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science does not distinguish formally between part-time and full-time studies, but, based on data from other online degree programs offered through Continuing and Distance Studies, we anticipate that about half of the students will complete the program on a part-time basis. There will be no minimum number of units in which students are required to enroll concurrently or per year. It is intended that students will take LIBS 100 as a foundational course early in their program, progress in meeting the program outcomes as they meet the learning outcomes of the option courses, and finally, complete the program with the capstone course, LIBS Progress Evaluation - Describe the frequency and method of monitoring student progress and how it will be administered. Student progress and performance will be monitored using existing practices and protocols in the Faculty of Arts and Science and participating departments, such as the annual assessment of students overall GPA in order to determine their standing. 16 3.7 Other - Comment on any special matters and innovative features (e.g., the Program will be fully accredited by Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing). N/A 4. Program Content 4.1 Explain how the curriculum addresses the current state of the discipline and fields of study. The curriculum requires students to take courses in the Liberal Arts three domains humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences and comports well with similar programs offered at other universities, such as the Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree at Harvard University. Given the broad range of courses students must take to complete the program requirements, they will encounter innovative research and teaching in a variety of subject areas, and the structure and expectations of the program will require them to synthesize what they have learned and to apply it to real world situations. The focus on transferable skills, not just knowledge, places the BA in Liberal Studies on the leading edge of contemporary curriculum design. 4.2 Identify any unique curriculum or program innovations or creative components. The capstone course, LIBS 300, is unique because it engages program students in a capstone project that entails both individual and collaborative research that must derive from the Liberal Studies three domains. In the course, students will be able to draw together the disciplinary perspectives of the courses they have taken pursuant to the program and develop a multidisciplinary approach to the capstone project. 4.3 Academic Integrity - Explain how the Program educates students on the importance and role of academic integrity. All courses that comprise the program include in their syllabi Faculty of Arts and Science regulations related to Academic Integrity, and instructors use strategies to ensure academic integrity in the online environment. Students are provided with guidelines for the responsible use of material that is not their own and for the documentation of such material, particularly in research-focused courses such as LIBS 300. 20 5.2 Describe how the proposed methods of assessing student achievement relate to the Program learning outcomes and degree level expectations. The methods of assessment within each option course will vary from course to course and will be appropriate to the discipline or subject in question. These may include self-assessment quizzes, tests, exams, essays, written assignments, group and individual creative assignments, and group activities, both synchronous and asynchronous. LIBS 100 and LIBS 300 will require students to draw together and to synthesize the broad approach to knowledge that constitutes the liberal arts. LIBS 300, in particular, will require students to deploy the liberal arts three domains in an effort to individually and collaboratively understand and interpret a salient issue of real world application and public interest. 5.3 Outline the plans for documenting and demonstrating the level of performance of students (must be consistent with the OCAV s Undergraduate Degree Level Expectations - Refer to p.31 of QUQAPs) Level of performance will be attested by the grades students receive in the various courses that comprise the program and LIBS 300, which must be taken by all students in the program, will enable a summative assessment of students success in meeting the UDLEs. 6. Mode of Delivery 6.1 Explain how the proposed mode(s) of delivery meets the Program learning outcomes and the degree level expectations. Comment on the relationship between mode of delivery and accessibility requirements. All courses are online and the mix of subjects covered, assignments, and assessment tools that students will encounter in the program will give broad preparation and diverse experience to students as they meet the UDLEs. CDS (and ITS) ensures that all online courses meet level A standards of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. Course notes use HTML pages accessible by all screen readers. All videos and audios have close captioning and/or transcripts. Level AA standards must be in place for all courses as of In the meantime, CDS responds to individual student requests (through Disability Services) and adapts material as needed. CDS also consults with the Adaptive Technology Centre and Disability Services Office to ensure individual student s needs are met. 6.2 Distance Delivery - Where students may take the same Program, or elements of it, in two different modes of delivery, indicate how consistency in Program requirements and standards will be assured. Describe how a learning community will be fostered, how regular interactions with faculty, students, etc., will be assured, and comment on access to materials, resources, and technology. Quality standards are ensured by new courses going through the standard Departmental and Faculty curricular approval processes. Courses that are offered both online and on campus must share the same learning outcomes; this is ensured by the academic Department formally verifying their approval of common student learning outcomes when an existing course is first developed into an online version. A learning community is created through the peer interaction that is included in all online courses, and through online office hours with instructor and TAs, which are conducted both synchronously and asynchronously. All course materials are available online; textbooks are purchased through the Campus Bookstore and delivered to off-campus students. Students have access to Library holdings and resources, and support services are available online, phone or in person. Technology needs are clearly articulated for enrolment in courses, and technological support is provided to students by both ITS and CDS. Last Revised: November 03, 2015 Page 13 of 22 Page 20 of 75
