In both contexts I was a participant observer involved in the daily practices of the school community while collecting data for my PhD study. Qualitative, ethnographic data includes: unstructured observation notes; photographs; and semi-structured focus group interviews with educators, children, and families. I participated in several professional development opportunities for Reggio Emilia educators, in several international Study Tours, and in the 2006 International Winter Institute. I was involved in supporting the schools during Study Tours and in the welcoming of delegates to the International Winter Institute. During these events I often acted as an interpreter (Italian-English and English-Italian) for Reggio Emilia speakers and international delegates The Beehive Montessori School, Mosman Park, Western Australia Teacher, Italian (3 to 12 year-old children) Responsible for developing and implementing a differentiated, outcomes-based curriculum for a coeducational school of 200 children. I developed and implemented the school s LOTE (Languages Other Than English) curriculum, according to the guidelines and requirements of the Curriculum Framework for Kindergarten to Year 12 Education in Western Australia (Curriculum Council, 1998). I introduced an innovative cross-curricular and collaborative approach to LOTE teaching and learning, by integrating learning experiences into existing classroom contexts. I planned and taught daily in accordance with Montessori philosophy, integrating Montessori materials into learning experiences as appropriate. I duplicated, in Italian, materials used in Montessori first language teaching and learning in each classroom, to be selected and used by the children at any time. I taught LOTE in the Special Needs Unit, with children affected by Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other behavioural and learning disorders. I integrated diverse cultural backgrounds, ages, and language skills into daily learning experiences. Stefania Giamminuti - CV - 3 -
