Frank Falcone, Marywood University, AGSCCU Secretary/Treasurer, submitted the Treasurer s Report. The document is attached.
2 Candace Hetzner, Boston College, was elected to be the AGSCCU Chair for Jennifer Latham, Fordham University was elected to be the AGSCCU Chair Elect for Lewis University sought institutional membership into AGSCCU. By unanimous vote, Lewis University was welcomed to the AGSCCU. Chake Kouyoumjian posed the following discussion question for the conference: How has the recession impacted Catholic University operations? Loyola Marymount University s Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, Dr. Joseph Hellige, has been promoted to CAO and Senior Vice President. A landmark change in LMU s 100 year history, following a national search, has been the appointment of David Burcham, the first lay President. LMU has met its enrollment goals. The fact that public universities have had to undergo budget cuts has helped some private universities in achieving and even exceeding their goals. LMU is hosting the next AJCU Graduate Deans meeting in March Boston College had a downturn in master s level enrollment due to the economy. Lewis University, near Chicago, has been growing rapidly at 6 to 8%. Their capital campaign has been focused on tuition relief for students. Assumption College made their undergraduate enrollment goals this year, but did not for the previous two years. The University has turned to the graduate operations to generate additional revenues. Seton Hall University has many acting administrators presently. The Board and the Bishop are considering changing the by-laws so that a lay person may become University President. Seton Hall has experienced a 5% budget cut in the Arts and Sciences budget. They have been given a mandate to increase graduate enrollment. Seton Hall fielded their largest undergraduate class in 30 years. Seton Hall School of Business experienced 28% increase in revenue in They admit students three times a year. The Seton Hall Stillman School of Business recently underwent successful general business reaccreditation. Seton Hall recently received accreditation for the Accounting program. Seton Hall University is now only one of two Universities in New Jersey that holds accounting accreditation. The faculty is reviewing the academic curriculum, but Wall Street employers do not want online programs. Notre Dame University has a mandate to meet all undergraduate student need. Need has risen 30%. All graduate students are funded. Notre Dame University is engaged in several construction projects including an engineering building, law school annex, and a dorm. They have received $118.9 million in sponsored research. At Notre Dame University, graduate assistantship stipends have been increased. Notre Dame covers a significant portion of the health premiums of graduate students with stipends. Health insurance premiums may pose a challenge to the University if the increase in costs is greater than 20%. The Health Care Reform Act is a source of premiums increase.
3 Notre Dame University has many married graduate students. They have been working on a new maternity policy. Notre Dame University will grant a leave to the primary caregiver of a newborn. They will continue to pay the student s stipend and the University s portion of health premiums during that time. Overall applications increased 17% at Notre Dame University. Students delayed commitments to near the deadline. Recession may have helped them with recruiting this year. Notre Dame University has the following new programs: Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, PSM in Global Health, and a new master s program in Classics. They are trying to decide what the optimal size for graduate programs is and get academic programs to identify the measures of quality. They invited the group to submit ideas to them on these topics. Notre Dame University has put a professional development program in place for graduate students on ethics. They are encouraging graduate students to get external funding and have provided workshops on how to do so. They want to develop a system to capture who is submitting grant applications. Duquesne University is building new dorms presently while new revenues are coming from online programs which is new for us. They have a new PSYD Program. Duquesne University has a marketing strategy where they will give a tuition discount in any graduate program with excess capacity. They completed a successful pilot program in Education with this strategy. Loyola University Maryland did not meet UG recruitment goal due to strict transfer policy problems. There are only a limited number of assistantships to support graduate students. They have tight controls on hiring affiliate faculty presently. They have a new graduate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences. They will be hiring 21 new faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences. Graduate revenues are up in Psychology and SLP. They have entered a new capital campaign. Marquette University was the first Catholic University with coeducational classes. They are celebrating 100 years of women in higher education. Father Pilarz will be the new University President. Marquette University is starting a new Ph.D. in Physical Therapy. The UG discount rate is up while graduate enrollments are up a bit. St. Mary s College of California has plans to build new library and athletic center. Presently, they are undergoing a culture change that features graduate education more extensively. They are having a strong recruiting year due to budget cuts in California. Graduate enrollment is up 10% in the past two years. Creighton University has had double digit enrollment growth in the past four years. Master s programs in negotiation and security analysis have strong enrollment. They have a new Ed.D. Program in Interdisciplinary Leadership with 19 students. Creighton University will have a new President in July, The University is undergoing a prioritization process, and the graduate level is hoping for additional resources due to enrollment growth.
4 Catholic University completed its accreditation process this year. Catholic University is a tuition driven institution and does not depend upon its endowment for operational funding. Catholic University has leased a lot of land in Washington D.C. to commercial interests that assists them greatly. Catholic University has a new President and undergraduate and graduate enrollment has increased. Fordham University is working on assessment across academic programs. Fordham University had decrease in enrollment in Fall 2009, but recovered in the Spring 2010 semester. Applications for UG programs were up at Fordham University for Fall They exceeded revenue projections. Fordham University saw increases in enrollment in new M.S. Ethics and Society, M.S. in Urban Studies. They will have a new M.S. in Applied Psychological Methods for Fall They tried to use existing classes and interdisciplinary approach to decrease curriculum costs. Fordham University is conducting analysis of graduate school financial loss. They were conservative with budgets and more money was put into financial aid. All graduate enrollment sectors were up with fewer masters level students, but current students have taken heavier credit loads. Alumni have increased giving to the Graduate School over the past year and studentalumni collaborations have also increased. Loyola University of Chicago was not hurt by the recession. They are in the midst of a building campaign to support student activities initiatives and to get more LEED certified buildings. Graduate school enrollments are robust and have exceeded targets for the past two years. Doctoral level enrollments are steady. Loyola University of Chicago is working on a new strategic plan since new capital campaign went well. As per University President, the graduate school will get a $3 million endowment by year end. They are also working on assessment with academic departments on qualities they desire to achieve at the University. Loyola University tracks students grant activity. Students get $300 by going through the Office of Research Services. It has produced growth in grant applications. Graduate and undergraduate students have gone through mentoring program that has aided with degree completions. They have a new doctorate in bioethics and will have an MA in Digital Studies by next Fall. At Saint Louis University, the Graduate School was dissolved last year. They are presently searching for a Vice-President for Graduate Education. Respectfully submitted, Frank T. Falcone, Secretary/Treasurer
