4 Senior Executive Programmes International Executive Development Programme Our IEDP is, first and foremost, a truly international learning experience. It is designed to lay a solid foundation in the South African context, incorporating an international context with a week at the London Business School, and the study tour. The intention is to promote your personal development at a global level. One of the great strengths of the programme is the wide variety of delegates from both the private and public sector nationally and also from other African countries. This provides a wonderful opportunity for networking and building relationships that will be mutually beneficial long after the programme has ended. Destinations: London, Dubai, Singapore Contact Faith Koroloso on or senamolela.koroloso@wits.ac.za International Learning and Development Program The annual International L&D Study Tour was initiated by Wits Business School in It is based on the understanding that South Africa has a severe shortage of managerial and professional skills and the assumption that learning how some of the world s foremost companies and business schools grow talent and build the skills required to compete in the future, would be of considerable benefit to HR and L&D professionals in this country. In 2011 a number of senior and high potential HR and L&D professionals from some of South Africa s leading companies visited top global companies and Business Schools in New York and Boston and in 2012 a similar visit was facilitated to London and Paris. It has been decided that the 2014 programme will again visit New York and Washington. In Washington we will be attending the ASTD conference. Destinations: New York, Washington Contact Faith Koroloso on or senamolela.koroloso@wits.ac.za Senior Executive Programme The programme is intended to be the pinnacle of the generalist executive courses offered by WBS. This will be done through varied pedagogical methods, including case studies, business simulations, company visits and/or action learning. Delegates understanding of strategic issues in organizations will be deepened. This 12 week course consists of 6 core modules plus at least 2 electives. Some of the core modules include; Communication and voice, Strategic Human Resources, Board-level management of Governance and Corporate Accountability as well as Leveraging Technology and Executive Information Systems for Business Advantage.
5 Africa Now! - Johannesburg, Nairobi, Kigali To prepare companies to assess and seize opportunities in Africa, Wits Business school presents Africa Now! in association with Frontier Advisory, to give managers and investors an on-the-ground understanding of the opportunities and challenges for businesses success in the African economy. The course balances classroom time with in-market practical experience. Two foundation days at WBS develop analytical frameworks, case studies, and discussions with companies that are building businesses on the continent. After this the programme moves into a week immersion, split between Nairobi and Kigali. The international module focuses on innovation and competitiveness, and will specifically address the following sectors: Banking and Financial Services, Infrastructure, ICT, FMCG, and the Public Sector. Destinations: Johannesburg, Nairobi, Kigali Contact Virginia Matshaba on or xoliswa.matshaba@wits.ac.za Boardroom Dynamics for Women Executives (Equivalent to NQF level 9) WBS is responding to the transformational necessity to increase the pool of women executives in South Africa. This will take place through the judicious use of examples, exercises, assessments and through the specific mechanism of women only admission. The programme achieves these aims by using an integrative approach that includes modules to enable a thorough understanding of both the internal and external environments, including relevant legislation and the media.

7 Management Development Programmes Management Advancement Programme The Management Advancement Programme (MAP) is designed to assist managers whose experience and primary activities have been in a specialised functional area. The objective is to give managers broad exposure to the fundamental nature of the management process and human behaviour within organisations. The MAP programme has been run by the business school for over 25 years and has a good reputation among employers. The programme is aimed at middle managers who want to fast-track their careers. Participants who successfully complete the programme will receive a certificate of competence. Contact Khosi Nkosi on or khosi.nkosi@wits.ac.za New Managers Programme The New Managers Programme is Wits Business School s entry level programme for managers. It is oriented at new managers or managers growing from a technical specialist to a general management role. The NMP is a first step for career progression into a general and senior management position, where the ability to understand the different areas in a business and to adopt new and improved ways of managing self and others is a key criterion of success. This is accomplished by enhancing skills in analysing and evaluating complex information and increasing understanding of organisational dynamics. The use of group work in the learning process ensures that all participants profit from interaction with their peers. Contact Jackie Mthembu on or jackie.mthembu@wits.ac.za Accelerated Development for Emerging Managers (Equivalent to NQF level 6) A persistent paradox in the South African labour market is the growing number of young unemployed graduates and those with equivalent post matric qualifications eager to enter the world of business management. However, the business sector regards them as unemployable because they lack the necessary day-to-day organisational experience and realities. This programme is designed to fill the gap by flexibly combining core management courses with selected personal life skills and sector-relevant electives per cohort. The aim of the programme is to transform participants into self-reliant managers by providing them with the critical tool-kits required for a successful management career.
8 Finance Programmes Finance for Non-Financial Managers Finance for Non-financial Managers is an exciting and relevant four-day short learning programme aimed at helping you better understand the way your company works with its finances. This easy-to-understand overview of finance in the workplace will empower you to interpret financial statements, analyse the numbers, and make better business decisions. Participants will also gain an insight into why, and how, important financial decisions are made. In addition, the use of relevant South African case studies will help you to apply the knowledge to your own unique business environment, as you are guided and stimulated by some of the top financial lecturers in the country. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance. Contact Anne Badcock on or anne.badcock@wits.ac.za Technical and Financial Evaluation of Mineral Projects This specialist course is designed to help participants develop strategic approaches for evaluating projects at the pre-feasibility stage. The course also aims to cover the underlying accountancy, financial and technical principles which apply to mineral projects, and to demonstrate how these influence the way a financial model is constructed. Particular attention will be given to the treatment of the key independent variables, such as gradetonnage relationships, and the way these influence the rate of mining, associated costs and optimization of the net present value of a project. Contact Brigitte Lerena on or brigitte.lerena@wits.ac.za Certificate Programme in Finance and Accounting (Equivalent to NQF level 6) The Certificate Programme in Finance and Accounting will enable Professionals, Managers, Business Analysts and Technical Specialists to participate and cope with the complexities of financial decisions and long-term financial commitments which are an integral part of every business s success or failure. For those without a finance background, it is an essential prerequisite for promotion to senior levels in the organisation. Heightened competition, technological changes, volatility in inflation, interest rates, taxation, foreign-exchange rates and world-wide economic uncertainty must be dealt with on a daily basis. Participants will be given the tools to obtain a strategic perspective on the financial management of their businesses. Contact Nerina Corken on or nerina.corken@wits.ac.za Financial Reporting for Non-Financial Directors A major feature of the disclosure philosophy in the corporate governance system is the requirement for companies to produce audited accounts and to make these available to relevant stakeholders and the public, by delivering them to the registrar of companies. Directors of Boards are entitled to rely on accountants and auditors to provide such information; however, they have the legal obligation (that cannot be delegated) to approve the financial statements, and express opinions regarding their accuracy and compliance with accounting practices particularly International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). It is for this reason that all directors must be familiar with the fundamentals of financial literacy and basic accounting conventions as well as the business in which the company is engaged in order not to breach their duty of care and diligence.
9 Development Finance in the BRICS Economies As BRICS becomes more increasingly institutionalized, it will begin to challenge the economic architecture set out by the Bretton Woods institutions and set up a new agenda for the development finance space. Join us for this four-day short course and be better equipped with knowledge about the BRICS economies by enhancing your capabilities and competitiveness in financing this fast growing trade bloc.

Contact Nerina Corken on or nerina.corken@wits.ac.za Thinking & Planning Strategically In the context of ongoing turbulence and change in South Africa and the global environment, it is important for managers to be able to plan ahead and use tools of strategic thinking to transform their organisation in alignment with emerging opportunities and threats. This four-day full-time programme meets the needs of middle- and senior-level managers from either the private or public sector who have responsibility for company direction, strategy creation, planning and macro-decisions-making within their organisation. This four-day programme will educate delegates on how to use a selected framework to gain a holistic perspective of their business operations as well as mapping the upstream supply chain and downstream distribution network. 13 Project Management Programmes Project Management Programme (Fundamentals) This five-day full time programme provides participants with an insight into the technical, financial and organisational aspects of project management. Project definition, planning, implementing and control phases are covered, using methods and techniques which can be adapted to suit projects of any size or complexity. Participants will receive detailed information using appropriate computer software, and spend half a day in the computer laboratory applying that knowledge in the management of a medium sized project. Certificate Programme in Business Project Management (Advanced) The ability to plan and execute projects is critical to an organisation s ability to bring about change. Projects, from small to mega, are required to take advantage of opportunities, to optimise operations, and to meet statutory requirements. In short, project management has become a core skill for managers at varying levels and across all disciplines. This programme is WBS s response to customers requiring a more substantial qualification. The traditional disciplines of project planning and control are covered. In addition, there is discussion on how projects exist within the organisation, and what is needed for them to thrive. Thus, perspective is built that goes beyond the project itself. No matter what the project or programme, we explore issues from the financial justification process, through implementation, to the planned returns or benefits. The practical skills transferred will be applicable to both private and public sector, and to any type of industry. The outcome for the participant will be a greater understanding of the principles, the techniques and the strategic implication of project management, particularly for their own organisations. Executive Achievement Through Projects (Executive) The key responsibility of executives is to bring about change to take advantage of opportunities, and to optimise operations. Often there is a gap between executives knowing what needs to happen, and making it happen. Appropriate executive involvement is essential for projects to successfully meet the goals of the business. This programme addresses that gap. An intensive, common-sense based, programme to equip executives with the knowledge and skills to initiate and respond to change, through projects.roughly half the time is spent in interactive lectures, and half analysing case studies in syndicate groups or doing self-assessment exercises. At the end of the programme, participants will know how to enable and sponsor projects of varying sizes, to achieve strategic and operational objectives. They will have assessed their current practices, and identified areas for improvement.

16 Entrepreneurship Programmes Technology and High Growth Entrepreneurship The course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of technology and high-growth entrepreneurship. Presentations of real cases by invited experts convey the art required to implement each. Moreover, the course content is driven by benchmarked offerings at Stanford University and MIT. The course supports managers, entrepreneurs, and engineers with technical backgrounds who are opting to start their own business and/or in the process of reinventing industries and markets. Corporate Entrepreneurship The present business environment is filled with many contradictions where the dominant logic of a company previously considered optimal, may well be inappropriate. One way of creating a dynamic dominant logic is to make entrepreneurship the basis upon which the organization is conceptualized. The scope of corporate entrepreneurship is widening as organizations that have not previously been recognized as entrepreneurial begin to do so in order to survive and succeed in increasingly competitive and financially constrained environments. In the quest for sustainable competitive advantage, companies are finding that lower costs, higher quality and better customer service are not enough. The focus is on creating work environments where entrepreneurship is not the exception, it is the norm. This course is based on cutting-edge knowledge and research which has application value, where delegates must take the ideas, concepts, tools, and frameworks to which they are exposed and apply them in a series of real-world cases and contexts. Contact Virginia Matshaba on or xoliswa.matshaba@wits.ac.za

Within this business area, best practices need to be developed make organisations more intelligent in how they conduct business in the digital age.
