4 Alternative Careers in Education By Meaghan Goebel A Bachelor of Education is one of those degrees that will get you places, and not just inside a school. There are entire books written on the subject of alternative careers in education (many of which are available at the CaPS Resource Centre) because the skills you gain are so transferrable. Time-management, strong communication and organizational skills, and leadership training are all part and parcel of your education degree which can be used inside, but equally outside of the classroom. Education graduates have gone on to a myriad of other professions: police officer, probation officer, human resource manager, educational program advisor, outreach coordinator, park naturalist, and even adventure travel specialist. The list goes on but what these jobs all share is an emphasis on people skills, communication abilities, and organizational strengths which, as education graduates, you all share! If you are looking for a bit of an adventure before starting a full time position, an out-of-country experience can be financially supplemented by teaching English as a foreign language. This can give a candidate practical, hands on knowledge of an exotic and exciting teaching field, with the added bonus of life-lessons that can only be learned away from home. (A good place to start is: Don t let classroom walls limit your thinking when there are so many great options available. Come to the CaPS Resource Centre and check out these valuable resources: 101 Career Alternatives for Teachers, Career Opportunities in Education, and, What Can You Do With a Major in Education?
