With some little deviation, by MTB or by road bike, we could visit also the hinterlands and its rivers so Abruzzo is the perfect destination for bikers, especially if they love sea landscapes. 4 Highlights DAY 1 : FROM MARTINSICURO TO ROSETO DEGLI ABRUZZI Mtb/Road Bike(57 kms) elevation gain 200 mts Our tour will start in Martinsicuro at Tronto River, in Teramo area. We ll ride along the cicleway to Giulianova, through Villa Rosa, Alba Adriatica, Tortoreto Lido and Cologna Beach. From Giulianova, by the Tordino river, we ll arrive in Notaresco - Montepulciano (famous italian white wine) capital - where we ll visit Nicodemi Winery. Then Morro d Oro, Montepagano and back to the sea in Roseto degli Abruzzi. DAY 2 : FROM ROSETO DEGLI ABRUZZI TO MONTESILVANO. Mtb/Road bike (51 kms) elevation gain 121 mts We ll visit Torre di Cerrano Marine Park in Pineto, then the wonderful Atri and its WWF Oasi and Calanchi (charateristich type of rocks) natural reserve. Then we ll reach Città Sant'Angelo (one of the most beautiful villages in Italy ) and back to the sea in Montesilvano, riding along the Saline river. 5 DAY 3 : FROM MONTESILVANO TO SAN VITO CHIETINO Mtb/Road bike (41 kms) elevation gain 50 mts Day 3 will begin in Pescara, the biggest town in Abruzzo, where we ll cross the Sea Bridge, a stunning modern pedestrian bridge, from which we could star at the Adritic sea but also at the Majella mountains. Then we ll ride to Francavilla al Mare, near Chieti, and - along the seaside to Ortona and Lido Riccio, where the coast is no more sandy, but rocky and we ll enter the Trabocchi Coast areas. In Ortona we we ll visit Ripari di Giobbe reserve, Aragonese Castle and Acquabella reserve with its suggestive sceneries, riding along the former railway line. In San Vito Chietino, last stage of the third day, we ll have a traditional dinner on a Trabocco, the old fishing machine. DAY 4 : FROM SAN VITO CHIETINO TO SAN SALVO Mtb/Road Bike (51 kms) - elevation gain 50 mts Along the Trabocchi Coast, we ll go south to Fossacesia, where we ll visit the magnificent San Giovanni in Venere Abbey. Then Torino di Sangro and its holm woods, famous also for the Gustav Line where in 1943 Ducthes tried to stop allied troups advance. Past Casalbordino, we ll reach Punta Aderci natural reserve in Vasto, where we ll visit also the hystorical center with its Caldoresco Castle and Avalos Palace and, from Loggia Amblingh, a very panoramic viewpoint, we could see even Tremiti Isles. Then San Salvo, last stage of Bike to Coast cicleway, where we ll visit the Mediterranean botanical garden. 6 Info 2 EXPLORATION: FROM THE SEA TO THE MOUNTAINS VAL DI FORO TOUR 72 hours bike or trekking tour from the sea to the mountains, along Foro s Valley, a stunning valley at Majella s slopes : 3 days to explore so different setting in few kms, from the dirt valley near the mouth river to the wild mountains and the National Park and its reserve. The reserve was established in 1991 and starting from 1995 it has been included in the Majella s National Park: it consists of some piedmont hills up to the Majelletta mountain, a lot of beech woods and Foro river s headwaters. There are also maples, service trees, lindens, holms and some species of birds (like different types of great tits, an uncommon woodpecker, buzzards, goshawks, owls) and mammals (foxes, martens, squirrels, roe deers) This holiday could be organized also with some trekking / nordic walking or during winter months snowshoeing excursions, that are suitable for all ages and training. 7 Highlights DAY 1 : FORO S VALLEY TOWARD ADRIATIC COAST Mtb/Road bike (44 kms) elevation gain 80 mts We ll start our route from De Rosa Mill, between Ari e Villamagna villages, along a tratturo (the old sheeps track) parallel to the Foro river. A very easy and safe ride in Mtb/road bike through Ari, Villamagna, Miglianico, Ripa Teatina, Francavilla al Mare. DAY 2: FORO S VALLEY BETWEEN MAJELLA AND ADRIATIC COAST Mtb/Road bike (43 kms) elevationg gain 145 mts This fascinating excursion, medium level difficulty, includes all the typical elements of a MTB ride : nature, relax, history. We ll start at the Foro river s mouth in Francavilla al Mare and, along the river, we ll climb over the mountains, passing through Fara Filiorum Petri, Ari e Villamagna. We could see Vacri waterfalls and the famous Fornace Diaz, an old furnace. Then we ll reach in Bucchianico at Calcara di San Camillo in Bucchianico, where we ll visit its little church. DAY 4: CHIETI S HILLS WINE Mtb/Road bike (39 kms) / Trekking (10 kms) elevation gain 243 mts Tollo, Crecchio, Canosa Sannita, Villa Caldari on Chieti s hills are the best place to try Montepulciano, Trebbiano and the Rosè Cerasuolo, that has a cherry flavour. Tollo, Tullum, Tenuta Ulisse, Roveri, Agriverde will be the wineries where we ll stop to have wine and also oil tastings. We ll visit also Crecchio, a medieval village with a wonderful castle. 13 Highlights DAY 1 : L'AQUILA, THE TOWN OF HERMIT POPE Mtb/Road bike (35 kms)/trekking (12 kms) elevation gain 70 mts L'Aquila was founded in 1254 during Corrado IV di Svevia reign, on the ruins of Amiternum, a Roman city. In 1257 it became an episcopal seat; in 1266 after destructione caused by Manfredi s troups the city was rebuilt including 99 castle confederations. Every castle could choose a location in which build a church, a square and a fountain: this is precisely why number 99 is the town s symbol! We ll visit the Spanish Fortress, the lightening Fountain in Piazza Battaglione Alpini, Santa Maria Paganica church, Ardinghelli and Margherita Palace, where there s the town hall and that has 52 mts high tower, whome bell rings every evening 99 times. Then San Bernardino church, the Jewish discrict and Santa Maria di Collemaggio church, built for the will of Pope Celestino V. Our last stage we ll be the very iconic 99 cannelle fountain, built in 1272, that has 99 taps and was used as city wash house. Accomodation in L Aquila. 14 DAY 2: TERAMO, THE OLD INTERAMNIA Mtb/Road bike (35 kms)/ Trekking (12 kms) elevation gain 50 mts Between the sea and the mountain, 20 kms away from the coast and 40 kms away from Gran Sasso mountains, there is Teramo, the old Interamnia, that means town between two rivers, as called by the Romans because Tordino and Vezzola rivers flew in its territory. One of the most magnificent monument in Teramo is the Roman theatre, built in 30 a.c. : it was a huge building, with its travertine terraces 78 mts- diameter long, 20 arches, 3000 people capacious. Near the theatre we ll see the ruins (external walls) of the Amphiteatre, built during the first century d.c. Teramo s symbol is the Duomo (also called San Berardo Cathedral, the patron saint), built from 1158 and recently restored; its style is romanic, with some gothic elements. Other important monuments are Sant Anna church, San Giovanni Monastery, the former Benedictine nuns monastery Madonna delle Grazie church, the episcopal Palace and the town hall Loggia, Casa Capuani and Delfico Palace (in which there is a big public library).

15 DAY 3: CHIETI, ALONG THE GUSTAV LINE Mtb /Road bike (35 kms)/ Trekking (12 kms) elevation gain 120 mts Chieti, on the the top of an hill, is the perfect destination for bikers and trekkers, for all ages and training. Chieti has a huge archaeological and artistic heritage, but also a breath-taking views on the Adriatic sea and on the mountains. This urban excursion will start from Largo Valignani, a squared called the well because was built on an old Roman cistern. In this square there is the Marruccino theatre and the episcopal Palace with its tower adorned by multicolor majolicas. In 1994 Monsignor Giuseppe Venturi declared Chieti as an open town that means that a town gives itself up so the opposing troups don t raze it. From Largo Valignani, passig through Via Pollione, we ll reach Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, a square called San Giustino" with its cathedral, the courthouse, Mezzanotte Palace and the town hall. We ll visit also the Archaeological Museum, where is hosted the famous sculture Capestrano warrior, De Majo Palace, Archaeological Park Civitella, a lot of panoramic viewpoint from which we could see Ripa Teatina, Villamagna e Bucchianico villages, Morrone, Sirente and Monti della Laga mountains.

It s famous all over the world for its Eucharistic Miracle. The most important square Piazza Plebiscito in the heart of the town is the starting point of our visit, then we ll see the Sanctuary, San Legonziano church, the Roman cistern, Diocleziano bridge, Madonna del Ponte Cathedral and Aragonese fortified tower. In the old Lanciano district we could star at ancient and fascinating palaces, as Crecchio Palace, San Giovanni Tower, Santa Croce and San Biagio church, the antique walls; in the Sacca e Civitanova district we ll visit San Rocco, San Nicola, Santa Giovina and Santa Maria Maggiore churches and the Diocesan Museum. 17 Info 5 VILLAGES AND ART CITIES: ABRUZZO VILLAGES BY BIKE Abruzzo villages are one of the most intriguing attractions, that rise up especially in mountain and piedmont areas near L Aquila. In 2015 Abruzzo is the second Region in Italy (Umbria is the first-one) in the most beautiful villages club rank, wth its 21 villages. They were built in the Middle Ages, made of natural stone and mortar; today we could see the ruins of external walls and of old gates. Some of these has a lot of small fortified little houses with embrasures at the top floor as a real defensive city walls; some have aweinspiring castels or towers, fortresses, strongholds.. Then we ll visit Scurcola Marsicana with its castle built by Orsini family in , that has big defensive towers. Then Alba Fucens and Balsorano Vecchio, where on the top of an hill we ll could see the majestic Piccolomini Castle. Accomodation in Balsorano. DAY 2: ABRUZZO NATIONAL PARK FROM PESCASSEROLI TO INTRODACQUA, ALONG SAGITTARIO CANYONS Road bike (69 kms)/trekking (15 kms) elevation gain 622 mts Pescasseroli is 1000 mts high, in the heart of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, and it s philosopher Benedetto Croce s birthplace. Its Natural History Museum, the botanical garden and the wildlife observatory are worthy of attention. Its most important building is SS. Pietro e Paolo Cathedral. Near Pescasseroli, we ll enjoy Villetta Barrea s artificial lake, and the Wolf Museum and the Agricultural Traditions Museum in Civitella. We ll visit also the center of Barrea and Opi (two villages included in the most beautiful in Italy club), where we ll could stop at the Chamois Museum. Through Godi Pass we ll reach Scanno (another village in the club!) e, along the lake coast, we ll go down the Sagittario Canyons, passing by Villalago, Anversa degli Abruzzi, Bugnara, Introdacqua. 19 DAY 3: NAVELLI S VALLEY Mtb/Road bike (35 kms)/trekking (15 kms) elevation gain 504 mts Navelli s Valley is a very uncontamined territory that connects the Gran Sasso and the Sirente Velino mountains. The most important villages in this valley are Poggio Picenze, Barisciano, San Pio delle Camere, Prata d'ansidonia, Caporciano, Civitaretenga, Navelli (one of the most beautiful village in Italy, famous for saffron production), Bominaco (where we ll visit S.Maria Assunta church and S. Pellegrino), Tussio, the Camponeschi castle, Peltuinum. A big tratturo (old sheep s track, where shepards guided sheep from summer pastures to Puglia, where they used to spend the winter) runs through the valley. Accomodation in Navelli. We ll start our tour from Badia Morronese in Sulmona, the abbey used as a dungeon for a long time, and - cycling across the valley- we ll visit Pratola, Corfini, Introdacqua and finally Pettorano sul Gizio, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. In the afternoon you ll may enjoy a great adventure in Maja Green Adventure Park in Pisciarello Park, famous for its terapeuthic waters! DAY 6: HERMITAGES Mtb/Road bike (35 kms) elevation gain 450 mts For centuries, the solemn landscapes of Abruzzo, lying between the Adriatic Sea and the highest mountains in the Apennines has drown men into reflections on the mysteries of faith, and there inaccessible hermitages were created in the middle ages. In 1943, after the Fascism s fall and Mussolini s capture, this hotel became his prison (precisely on August, the 28 th), in fact it was considered more inaccessible than prisons in Ponza and Maddalena, where he was jailed before. 29 Info 8 EXPLORATION: SHEEPS TRACKS - TRATTURO REGIO BY MTB Tratturo is a grassy or stony track, usually 111 mts large, originated by the transit of sheep. There are 5 Regi Tratturi starting from Abruzzo towards other Italian regions and the longest one, called Regio Tratturo or Magno Tratturo ( Royal or Main ), is 244 kms long ad starts from L Aquila, near Collemaggio Abbey, to Foggia in Apulia. There are lot of sheep paths in the italian central regions, used for Transumanza ( transhumance ), the act to move the sheep towards the South of Italy in winter and to bring them back to the Apennine pastures in summer.
