2 As a service provider, you may be working with clients who: Have trouble budgeting for food Lack the skills to cook at home Have concerns about food Eat out more than eating at home Do not eat a healthy diet You can help your clients to address these issues because: You know your client You are a trusted source of helpful information This resource will: Provide you with assessment questions to help you to determine if your client needs further support Provide you with the resources that are available for your client

3 QUESTIONS ON FOOD SECURITY In the past 12 months have any of the following applied to you or anyone in your household? Have you worried about food running out before the next meal? Have you been unable to eat a balanced meal and how often? Are you including vegetables and fruit? Are you including whole grains? Are you including milk and alternative products? Are you including meat and alternatives? Have you felt hungry because there wasn t enough money to buy food and how often? Have you cut the size of or skipped meals because there wasn t enough food and how often?

5 QUESTIONS TO ASK ON BASIC COOKING How often do you eat at home vs. eating out? What influences you to eat at home more often, or eat out more often? Does anyone else in the household cook? If no, how do you cope with being the person responsible for food provision? How often do you/other household members cook/prepare food from scratch? Are you comfortable and confident cooking or preparing food (e.g. preparing food from scratch vs. ready-made foods)?

6 Based on these questions, your clients may hav Food Security Concerns Issues Time Cost Cooking Food Availability Nutrition They are eating out more often. No one else at home cooks. Eating out is more convenient. More people in the household = bigger meals to prepare. They say that eating out costs more money. There are many people in the household i.e. more food to purchase. The ratio of people living in their household is bigger than those that are working: less household income. They experience hunger or skip meals sometimes due to lack of money. Purchasing healthy food is limited due to lack of money. They are eating out more often. Their food is consistently prepared with pre-mixed, pre-made or ready-to-serve foods. They are not confident with cooking. They do not have much experience cooking. They are not able to cook certain meals due to expensive produce or limited food stores in their neighbourhood. There is not enough food to feed everyone. They do not have enough money to purchase healthy food. Eating out more often. Using pre-mixed, pre-made or ready-to-serve foods more often. Healthy and balanced diet is limited due to lack of money.
