2 Welcome Currently more than 8000 students are enrolled at our three campuses in Trier, Birkenfeld and Idar-Oberstein. Idar-Oberstein, the city of gemstones, is well known beyond Germany s borders and has an old tradition in cutting gemstones and manufacturing jewelry. Our Gemstone and Jewellery Design degree courses are one-of-a-kind in Germany and internationally distinguished. The Environmental Campus Birkenfeld has been guided by an environment-oriented framework and is a frontrunner in teaching and researching in fields like sustainability and renewable energy. Our modern-equipped campus follows the concept of a residential campus and provides comfortable, on-campus student accommodation. At the Campus, environmental protection and sustainable development are not only taught in theory, but also implemented in practice. All basic energy needs are met through renewable energy sources. Due to the extensive use of sustainable technologies, the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld is the first Zero-Emission Campus in Germany. 5 Campus for DESIGN Paulusplatz / Irminenfreihof / Idar-OBersTEIN / Schneidershof At the campus for design of the Trier University of Applied Sciences six disciplines of design are offered: Architecture, Interior Architecture, Fashion Design, Intermedia Design, Communcation Design in Trier as well as Gemstone and Jewellery Design in Idar-Oberstein. These disciplines compliment and enrich each other through a lively interdisciplinary exchange. Apart from the acquisition of specific professional knowledge students are further given the opportunity to get to know other areas in the field of design. The educational contents of all fields of study are characterized particularly by the open and transparent structures found in our department. Architecture B. A. / M. A. Architects are just as obliged to the social assignment of construction culture, as they are to the advancement of architectural design under the application of the latest scientific findings, technical developments and, not least, of shape- and space-giving factors. Interdisciplinary educational elements, as found in the complexity of shapeand form-giving degree programs, complement the core education and methodological competence in the field of architecture. In the degree program Communication Design the artistic, conceptional and compositional creativity is inseparably linked to formative, mechanical and technical competence. Students will solve design related tasks in the fields of social information transfer through text, images and sound. The sound shape of our immediate environment requires exceptional design competences under consideration of functional, ecological, economic and social framework conditions. Graduates of this programme thus receive two qualifications (vocational and academic degree). Methodical exchange between theoretical and practical phases at the university and within a company provides students with fundamental, scientific studies as well as hands-on experience. Academic courses at the Environmental Campus are interlinked and complementary to the vocational training periods. This means teaching about the complex economic, ecological and social origins of today s megatrends such as climate change, demography, resource management and intergenerational justice. Language of Instruction: English The two years M. Eng. program is structured in 2 theoretical semesters abroad at our partner university (either Japan, Brazil, Turkey or Morocco), followed by 1 theoretical semester in Germany at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld (ECB). The last semester has a practical orientation. You have to absolve an internship (obligatory) and your master thesis in a company/ institution of your choice.
