1 Hudson Valley Community College 80 Vandenburgh Avenue, Troy, New York AGENDA For the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of Hudson Valley Community College to be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. on the college campus, 80 Vandenburgh Avenue, Troy, New York, the following matters are submitted for consideration and action. 1. MINUTES Request is made for approval of the minutes of the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees held on April 30, 2013 Approved Action Taken COLLEGE OPERATING BUDGET & TUITION AND FEE SCHEDULE (materials enclosed) Request is made for approval of the college s Operating Budget in the amount of $110,150,437, with the related tuition and fee schedules that shall apply in , with full-time tuition established at $3,980 per year, and part-time tuition established at $165 per credit hour. Approved Action Taken 3. ACADEMIC SENATE RECOMMENDATIONS CURRICULUM Request is made for approval of the following curriculum changes, as recommended by the Academic Senate and the President: 1. New Degree: a. Digital Media A.A. Degree Program The Digital Media Certificate Program was created three years ago. Students continue to request that it be a two year A.S. degree program. In the three years the program has been in existence students have coupled the one year program with one year of Individual Studies and have eventually graduated with both the certificate and a two-year degree. The creation of this degree will afford students a clearer academic path to graduation with a Digital Media A.S. degree. New Courses: These new courses are a critical component to the field of digital media and to the concurrently proposed Digital Media A.S. degree DART 100, Digital Imaging I (3 credit hours; Fall 2014) This course emphasizes the use of the computer as a tool in digital image making. Hands-on lectures will introduce students to the tools and methods employed in digital imaging as well as current artistic trends in creating digital images. Emphasis will be

2 2 placed on the formal aspects of composition and structure, image manipulation, retouching, and compositing through raster-based graphics programs. In addition, students will be introduced to the process of making web graphics and methods for inputting and outputting digital images. It is expected that students will spend additional time outside of class completing course assignments. Students will also be required to purchase quality inkjet paper and other supplies (such flash drives and SD cards) as directed by instructor. This course uses Adobe certification courseware. DART 120, Web Art and Design (3 credit hours; Fall 2014) This studio art course will focus on Web design fundamentals in the context of creating art with the unique characteristics of the Web. Students will also be introduced to the history, theory and best practices of Web-based art through readings and hands-on lectures. Topics will include, but are not limited to compositional principles of the Web page, layout and navigation design, color schemes for the Web, and effective uses of multimedia incorporation. Through several small-scale projects, students will learn how to implement HTML, CSS and JQuery (or the current industry standards of Web design technologies) in Web site design and creation. This course uses Adobe certification courseware. DART 200, Digital Imaging II (3 credit hours; Spring 2015) This is an intermediate level course that will introduce students to digital imaging using a drawing tablet and will build upon image making skills developed in Digital Imaging I (DART 100). Students will examine current practices in both fine arts and the design industry through lectures and projects. The course will include practical exercises with the drawing tablet to introduce digital drawing techniques, advanced image manipulation using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and best practices in outputting for large-scale print images. Students will be required to purchase a drawing tablet and large format inkjet paper for this course. DART 220, Interactive Media (3 credit hours; Spring 2015) This course brings together video, animation, graphic design and digital art into an interactive environment. Students will be introduced to interactive media design concepts and practices and the technology that drives them. This course builds upon skills developed in Web Art and Design (DART 120) to include programming and scripting in the selected authoring software programs used in the course. DART 235, Arts Internship (3 credit hours; Spring 2015) Students will engage in a supervised internship in a work environment that requires the skills learned through their fine arts or digital media coursework. Placement assignments will be arranged by the student intern with the consent of the course instructor. Students may consult the course instructor for suggestions or present options of their own. 2. New Certificate Program: a. Entrepreneurship Certificate Program The certificate will provide opportunity for students with specific technical or innovative abilities with the entrepreneurial and business education skills necessary to increase the likelihood of their success as entrepreneurs. It will enhance the students' skill-sets both intellectually and through application.

Change in Pre-Requisite and Pre or Co-Requisite for ENTR 290, Entrepreneurial Strategy New Pre-requisite: ENTR 120, Entrepreneurial Process New Pre or Co-Requisite: ENTR 150, Legal Issues in Entrepreneurship; ENTR 210, Entrepreneurial Finance This pre and pre or co-requisite structure will allow for successful completion of both the certificate and Entrepreneurship A.A.S. degree program requirements more efficiently. 3. Change in Degree Requirements: a. Invasive Cardiovascular Technology A.A.S. Degree Program Revise course requirements as follows: We will make the requirement BIOL 139 or BIOL 271

4 4 We will now require a grade of C or better for BIOL 139 or BIOL 271, PHYS 110 and RESP 101. We will no longer require BIOL 205 but will require PHYS 110 with a grade of C or better. We will change MATH 110 to a choice of MATH 135, MATH 150 or a higher level math course. We will no longer require ICVT 230 in the last summer session and replace it with the concurrent proposed new courses IVCT 125, ICVT 215, and ICVT 225. The total number of credits will go from 68 to 64. These changes are being pursued to meet the changing needs of our graduates. All of these changes will benefit the students in regards to transfer opportunity and preparation for the clinical setting. New Courses: ICVT 125, Fundamentals of Invasive Cardiovascular Technology & Electrophysiology (4 credit hours; Summer 2014) This is an introductory course to the monitoring and interventional techniques used for cardiac patients. Content includes patient monitoring techniques, EKG performance, catheterization equipment and sterile patient preparation. ICVT 215, Electrophysiology Clinic I (2 credit hours; Fall 2014) This is an introductory course to the mapping and treatment of electrophysiology disturbances in cardiac patients. ICVT 225, Electrophysiology Clinic II (2 credit hours; Spring 2015) This course introduces the student to interventional treatment of electrophysiology disturbances in cardiac patients. 4. Deactivation and Discontinuance: a. Telecommunications Technology Verizon A.A.S. Degree Program The Telecommunications Technology Verizon A.A.S. degree is a corporate sponsored degree, which is a contracted benefit available only to Verizon employees. This benefit was negotiated out of Verizon s agreements with their unions. Only Verizon employees who will be able to complete their coursework no later than August 31, 2017, as defined by the policies and procedures of the Next Step Program, will be able to continue taking courses.
