4 DIGITAL MEDIA AND ANIMATION DEPARTMENT The Digital Media and Animation department offers Associate of Applied Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in digital media and animation. DEPARTMENT MISSION The Digital Media and Animation department at Alfred State prepares graduates for immediate employment or continued educational opportunities in a range of design and technology-related disciplines. The department provides quality technical education that integrates theory and practice with a foundation in the arts and sciences. FACILITIES Digital Media and Animation Studios - Students in DMA programs have access to a large traditional studio space for foundations in traditional materials, figure drawing, and 2D and 3D design. They also have access to a highly sophisticated computer lab that provides industry standard capability in 2D graphics, Web design, interactive media, motion graphics, 2D and 3D animation. Students enrolled in a DMA degree program have 24-hour access to these studios. A sound production studio with industry standard software and hardware is also available for students to use for class projects. Other Equipment and Software - Digital cameras, digital audio recorders, HD video cameras, and other pieces of high-end equipment are available for students to sign out. All entering students in the digital media and animation programs are required to purchase a laptop computer. The laptop enables students to have access to program-specific software via the wireless network on campus. DEPARTMENT PROGRAMS Digital Media and Animation (AAS) Digital Media and Animation (BS) 4
5 DIGITAL MEDIA AND ANIMATION VISUAL IMPACT CLUB PURPOSE I. One of the main objectives of the Visual Impact Club (VIC) is diversity. Along with diversity comes: A. A sense of variety and a point of difference. B. Traveling far and near also enables the sense of outside views and a variety that is reached by actually viewing live. C. The ability to explore cultures exposes members to current exhibits and opens them to new cultures. II. Another objective is the chance to experience the community and the life at Alfred State College. A. Provides support from peers and a connection with the school. B. Allows assistance for members in finding adequate information concerning internships and career possibilities. C. Assist members in discovering and gaining information about institutions of higher learning and possible prospects for transferring. D. Lets members experience the art in life and the life in art. MEMBERSHIP Any student who is interested to be a member of the Visual Impact Club needs to be enrolled at SUNY College of Technology at Alfred participating in any curriculum. MEETING First meeting will be announced. TRIPS Possible yearly trips: Buffalo, Rochester, Corning, and New York City. GAME DEVELOPMENT CLUB PURPOSE The Game Development Club is a dedicated group of students with the desire to analyze, create and distribute video games. Participants work collaboratively to design gameplay concepts and experiment with games technology. MEMBERSHIP Open to any Alfred State College student in any curriculum MEETING First meeting will be announced. 5
6 DIGITAL MEDIA AND ANIMATION STUDENT SHOWS At the end of the academic year there is a Digital Media and Animation Student Show in the gallery of Hinkle Library. The students of the Digital Media and Animation program are invited to display their work, traditional and computer generated during the school year. DMA CAGE SET 389 Hours: Check Cage door for Hours By signing out equipment from the cage you are agreeing to the following RULES. Failure to follow the these rules can result in loss of cage privileges, a grade of incomplete for studio courses, and payment of replacement cost for lost of damaged equipment. Students are responsible for the replacement cost of any equipment lost, stolen, or damaged while signed out in their name. Students signing out equipment MUST be enrolled in a DMA studio course that requires the use of the requested equipment. Students who have fulfilled all DMA coursework but are still taking classes on campus may NOT sign DMA equipment out of the cage. Students may not trade equipment or hand it off to another student without returning it to the cage first. Equipment may be checked out for a 24 hour period ONLY. If you need more time you need to bring it back and sign it out again. (only if there is low demand for this equipment) Equipment can be signed out Monday Friday. Equipment must be returned within 24 hours from the time you checked it out or on Monday if checked out on Friday. Students will be denied the opportunity to re-sign out a piece of equipment during times of high demand for that equipment, or if they have already signed it out twice in a row. Students are responsible for charging / re-charging batteries prior to returning the equipment, supplying their own AA batteries, USB cables, and SD cards for equipment that requires them. All equipment MUST be returned to the cage prior to the end of the semester and prior to any break. Students who wish to sign out equipment over a break must get permission from the department chair. 6

Attained a 2.0 grade point average in major courses (DGMA+FNAT). 4. Attained a minimum overall index of 2.0 along with other requirements as stated in the College Academic Regulations. 5. Approval of department faculty. 6. Completed at least one course from 5 of the 10 SUNY General Education Knowledge and Skill Areas (7 of 10 for the BS program). Note: Entry level of student into Math and Composition/Literature sequences is a function of student s high school preparation and Mathematics and English placement examinations. 7
