Seven of those contests take place in the Eblen Center. Nine different teams make up the games, with five from outside the Ohio Valley Conference. Saturday s contest marks the first meeting between the two programs since 2001, a contest taken by the Tech squad, The Golden Eagles have dominated the all-time series, owning a edge. Charles Jackson became the first Tech player to record a double-double in each of his first two career games since when Damien Kinloch managed the accomplishment. Kinloch was a 2013 inductee into the TTU Sports Hall of Fame. While it s still early in the season, Tech has already found its players dominating statistical categories, particularly offensive rebounding. The Golden Eagles own three of the top four spots in the OVC, with Mason Ramsey in first (5.0 off rpg), Charles Jackson in second (4.5) and Dwan Caldwell in fourth (4.0). Jackson also ranks first in the league in defensive rebounding (7.0) and first in total rebounding (11.5). Tech assistant coach Rick Cabrera holds ties to both programs. In addition to coaching at Tech, Cabrera played two seasons in the purple and gold. Prior to joining the Golden Eagle coaching staff, he spent as an assistant coach at Chattanooga. Tennessee Tech Ht. 3 SERIES VS. CHATTANOOGA TECH LEADS It s been over a decade since these in-state rivals met, but with over 50 games played between the two programs and a distance of only 100 miles between the two arenas, there s little doubt the rivalry burns on. Tech owns a very favorable lead, having won 40 of the 46 match-ups over the years, inlcuding a series best 10 straight two separate times. The Mocs have never claimed more than four in a row, although the team does own the highest point total with a monster 121 back in The Golden Eagles also own the largest margin of victory in the series, throwing down a 45-point win back in The series has seen two overtime contests, with each team claiming one on the road. The closest contest went to Chattanooga, as the Mocs eaked out a one-point victor back in Tech received the last laugh in the series, winning the most recent meeting by 10 points in Cookeville Chattanooga, Tenn. A late run by the hometown Trojans proved to be enough to hand the Tennessee Tech men s basketball team its first loss of the season as the Golden Eagles fell to USC in Los Angeles Monday evening, In a game that saw the Tech squad battle toe-to-toe with the Pac-12 members for nearly 40 minutes, key buckets late from USC guard Katin Reinhardt gave the Trojans the opportunity to put the game out of reach. Playing in front of several family members and friends proved to be no problem for Los Angeles native Dwan Caldwell, as the big man tied with Reinhardt for a game-high 19 points, thanks to 8-for-16 shooting from the field. Caldwell added five rebounds, all on the offensive glass, for the Tech squad in 31 minutes of action. For the second-straight game, junior center Charles Jackson notched a double-double, scoring 12 points and crashing the boards for 10 rebounds. He also saw 31 minutes of action to open his career with double-doubles in each contest, the first Tech player to do so in over a decade. Shirmane Thomas, a sophomore guard for the Golden Eagles, stuffed the stat sheets on the night with eight points, six rebounds, two assists, a block and three steals over 30 minutes of action. Two factors to the game were the disparities in free throws and attempts and 3-point shooting. USC attempted 16 more freebies in the contest, drilling 70 percent while Tech made just 61 percent of its 18 shots at the charity stripe. The Trojans also finished with a 40 percent mark from beyond the arc while the Golden Eagles struggled from downtown, hitting just 1-of-18 attempts. Tech actually out-rebounded the home squad on the night, pulling down 42 boards to USC s 33. The Golden Eagles grabbed 22 boards on the offensive end alone. Tech also had one less turnover than the Trojans. SUMMER OF SUCCESS DOWN IN THE DOMINICAN The Tennessee Tech squad got a slight head start to the season, embarking on a summer trip to the Dominican Republic for both basketball and community service. In addition to acting as a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the players who were able to participate (Javon McKay, Torrance Rowe, and Ryan Martin did not make the trip), the team got an early start on building team chemistry both on and off the court. The squad took part in several community service activities, ranging from feeding children at a local shelter to running a small basketball camp for the local kids. The Golden Eagles also played some basketball on TECH VERSUS... The Golden Eagles have played 14+ contests against 13 different opponents from the state of Tennessee throughout the program s history. Our bigs just dominated the paint in our first contest, Payne said. I was impressed with how well they got after the ball and were able to score in the post. They played a significant role in our first victory. Leading the way was junior big Anthony Morse, who tallied an impressive double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Incoming junior post Charles Jackson also tallied a double-double, scoring 10 points while adding 12 boards. Junior guard Josiah Moore led all scorers with 17 points. Tech s second contest of the day also ended as a 19-point victory, with the Golden Eagles taking down another professional team in the Metros de Santiago, That was a good quality win for us, Payne said. It was nice to see a couple of other guys lead the way and show that we can score from all over the floor. I m excited to see how our guys grow for the duration of our trip. Once again, Moore led the Golden Eagles in scoring, this time tallying 15 points and adding six rebounds. Sophomore DeOndre Haynes and freshman Savonte Frazier each scored 14 points, with Frazier including six rebounds and three assists. U-18 Team Thursday night. This was a good win for us, said head coach Steve Payne. We were a little banged up, so it was really nice to see the guys overcome some adversity and play hard. We still have a good amount of work to do, but the guys have been performing very well and I m proud. Sophomore guard DeOndre Haynes led the Golden Eagles on the night, dropping 16 points in the contest. Big man Charles Jackson came up just one rebound shy of collecting his second double-double of the trip, scoring 11 points with nine boards. Another sophomore guard, Shirmane Thomas, also performed well. The Homer, La. native tallied 12 points while dishing out six assists. GAME 4 D.R. NATIONAL SELECTION TEAM 69, TECH 67 Playing in its fourth game in just three days, the Tennessee Tech men s basketball team finally saw a blemish appear on its record during its trip to the Dominican Republic. The Golden Eagles fell to the D.R. National Selection Team Friday morning, 69-67, after a desperation at the buzzer bounced out. I think the schedule finally started to get to us a little bit, head coach Steve Payne said. We had some tired legs and banged up bodies out there, and it showed in a few different areas of the contest. We still had a chance to win the game at the end there. We are getting better every day and the progress is starting to show. We had just finished playing four games in three days, but we looked good out there. I think as a whole, this trip has really been an eye-opener for us and we learned a lot about ourselves as a team. With the victory, the Golden Eagles finished its game schedule with an impressive 4-1 mark over five days of action. Payne, 45, led the Tech program back to the Ohio Valley Conference tournament in , posting a overall record just one season after missing post season play with a mark in an injury-plagued campaign. Tech fought its way to a 9-7 record in OVC play in , grabbing the No. 5 seed after finishing fourth in a stacked East Division. Payne led the group to a first-round victory over SIUE. The head coach orchestrated a record in , going 9-7 in league play and leading the Tech squad to an OVC tournament first-round win over Southeast Missouri. The Golden Eagles also made their sixth post-season appearance that year, playing in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Payne came to Tech in 2002 as assistant coach under Mike Sutton, and was the top assistant on the staff for nine years, rising to the post of associate head coach. Although he filled the role as Tech s top assistant coach, Payne found himself vaulted into a much more demanding role when Sutton was sidelined for the early portion of the 2005 season after being stricken with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. During the season alone, Payne who was named the 2011 Top Assistant Coach in the Ohio Valley Conference by FoxSports.com headed the Golden Eagles on two Ohio Valley Conference road trips in Sutton s absence, and guided the team to three wins in four games. In his nine years, Payne has helped Tech post 149 wins and two of the program s five 20-win seasons, hitting that mark in and Payne was also recognized in July 2009 as one of the Top 25 Mid-Major assistant basketball coaches in the nation, according to CollegeInsider.com. Prior to his arrival at Tech, Payne was the acting head coach at Frank Phillips Junior College in Borger, Texas. Coming to the Golden Eagle program in 2002, he could already boast over a decade of coaching experience. Before he took over the reins at Frank Phillips Junior College, Payne was an associate head coach for four years under Happy Osborne at Georgetown College in Kentucky. During that time, the Tigers compiled a record and three conference championships in four years. The Tigers won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championship in Georgetown also finished second in the national tournament in and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in With Payne handling the day-to-day operations of the program, the Golden Eagles raced out to an 8-2 start with its only losses coming at Dayton and Cincinnati. Payne continued to handle a major portion of the coaching duties for the balance of the year, helping to lead Tech to an record and the semifinals of the OVC Tournament. Following the season, Payne was recognized for the role he played in Tech s success while Sutton began his recovery. He was named OVC Coach of the Year by CollegeInsider. com and CBSsportsline.com. Both awards, which are usually given to head coaches, were unusual but well-deserved recognition for the assistant coach. Payne was also listed as one of 15 finalists for the 2006 Hugh Durham Award honoring the mid-major Coach of the Year. Payne also served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Northwestern (La.) State University where he helped lead NSU to its best conference finish in a decade. He was also an assistant coach at Union University in Jackson, Tenn., where he was recruiting coordinator and helped lead the team to back-to-back 20-win seasons. Payne was director of player development at Union, and that included the coaching of two NAIA all-americans. He also coached at Knox Central High School in Barbourville, Ky. He is a graduate of Russell County High School in Russell Springs, Ky., and earned his bachelor s degree from Union College in Barbourville, Ky. in Payne and his wife, Kelli, have three children sons Parker (15) and Paxton (13), and daughter Abigail (10).
