The win snapped the Huskies 47-game winning streak. UConn, which went 40-0 last season, hadn t lost since March 12, 2013 in the BIG EAST Championship to Notre Dame, The Huskies hadn t lost a game in November since falling to North Carolina on Nov. 21, Connecticut s 47-game stretch was the fourth longest in NCAA history. Stanford also snapped the Huskies record 90-game winning streak with a victory in Maples Pavilion on Dec. 30, In fact, the Cardinal has ended three of the six longest winning streaks in NCAA women s basketball history. Its win over Baylor on Nov. 16, 2012 in Honolulu, 71-69, ended the Bears 42-game undefeated streak. For Stanford, Monday s win was the seventh in 20 tries against the nation s No. 1 squad in the Associated Press poll and first since toppling Baylor in the aforementioned game in Honolulu. Stanford has played the No. 1 team at least once every year since and is 4-7 over that span. The Cardinal has played Connecticut with the Huskies ranked No. 1 eight times and is now 2-6 in those encounters. Stanford moved to 4-1 all-time against Connecticut on The Farm. NEW NUMBER ONE: By virtue of its stunning performance, the Cardinal jumped all the way up to No. 1 when the USA TODAY Top 25 Coaches Poll was announced on Tuesday morning. It s the first time Stanford has been ranked first by the nation s coaches since Dec. 24, The Cardinal began the season No. 6 in that poll and the jump to No. 1 was its biggest leap in the USA Today top 25 since At the tail end of that season, it was ranked No. 14 heading into the NCAA Tournament, but made it to the Elite Eight and finished seventh in the country. It s the largest jump to No. 1 in that poll by any program since Texas A&M finished the season on top in That year, the Aggies entered the NCAA Tournament ranked No. 8. The Associated Press top 25 was released on Monday before the win over Connecticut so the Cardinal remains No. 6 in that poll. Stanford has appeared in the AP rankings a possible 460 times out of 675 total polls since 1977 (68.1 percent), with an average positioning of 6.6. The Cardinal s 460 all-time appearances in the AP top 25 are fourth behind Tennessee (661), Georgia (511) and Texas (471). By virtue of its sixth-place standing in the last AP poll, Stanford moved into a tie with Louisiana Tech for third when it comes to all-time AP top-10 appearances (373). Tennessee is first in that category with 587 and Connecticut is second with 380. [Thanks to Mel Greenberg for that note.] FORTRESS MAPLES: Maples Pavilion has always provided the Cardinal with an intimidating home-court advantage, which Stanford has used to its benefit. Stanford is (.853) in Maples since and (.982) since , with the only two losses coming during the campaign. The Cardinal is currently in the midst of a 28-game winning streak at home, which is the third-longest active stretch in the nation behind Chattanooga (41) and Notre Dame (29). That run is currently the fifth-longest in program history, behind stretches of 82 wins (Nov. 28, Dec. 29, 2012), 59 wins (Nov. 25, 1994 to March 14, 1998), 42 wins (Nov. 25, 1988 to Feb. 9, 1991) and 34 wins (Feb. 2, 1991 to Dec. 3, 1993) STANFORD ROSTER No. Player Pos. The updated offense is in stark contrast to the triangle that VanDerveer has become known for on The Farm and implemented prior to the season. She first gained experience with the tried and true triangle during her time with the 1996 Olympic Team and was tutored in the strategy in part by Jim Cleamons, a New York Knicks assistant coach who teamed with Knicks President Phil Jackson to win nine NBA titles as an assistant with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. This summer, VanDerveer and her staff spent time with Milwaukee Bucks assistant Joe Prunty and former Lakers coach Mike D Antoni, among others, to learn the intricacies of a more guard-oriented, fast-paced, pick-and-roll offense. VanDerveer at Pac-12 Media Day in late October: We really approached it intellectually, figuring, This is the problem we have, this is not going to work for this group, let s figure out something new. IT S ALL ABOUT THAT PACE: With significant question marks heading into the season, Stanford s up-tempo attack has been a revelation through two games. Stanford totaled 76 possessions, had an average possession time of 14 seconds and averaged points every time it touched the ball in the season opener against Boston College. In the win over Connecticut, those numbers read: 86 possessions, 17 seconds and points per possession. Through two games, the Cardinal is averaging 92.0 points per outing. The team s 184 points in its first two games are the program s most since it scored 186 at the start of the NCAA Championship season of That year Stanford opened with a victory over Michigan State and followed it up with a triumph against Ohio University. Both games were part of the Communiplex Hall of Fame Classic in Cincinnati, Ohio. Something to keep an eye on this year is the team s scoring average. The last season Stanford put up more than 80 points per game was (80.3), which was also the last season of Cardinal basketball before VanDerveer implemented the triangle offense. APPROACHING MARKS: Despite losing a number of key contributors, Stanford s Amber Orrange and Bonnie Samuelson are on their way toward putting their names among Cardinal all-time greats in various statistical categories. With 435 career assists, Orrange sits just behind a number of Stanford legends and is aiming to become the seventh Cardinal to reach the 500-assist plateau, joining Sonja Henning (757), Jennifer Azzi (751), Milena Flores (644), Jamila Wideman (585), Nicole Powell (577) and Jeanette Pohlen (560). She s also on track to crack Stanford s career top 10 lists for both games and minutes played. Orrange is 10th in the nation among active players in assists. The senior captain also has 977 points in 112 career games and its just 23 away from becoming Stanford s 35th 1,000-point scorer. Bonnie Samuelson has drained pointers in her three years on The Farm. She s never made less than 44 in a season and reaching that number again this year will make her the seventh Stanford player to hit 200 from behind the arc, joining Candice Wiggins (295), Jeanette Pohlen (268), Vanessa Nygaard (210), Kelley Suminiski (208), Sebnem Kimyacioglu (205) and Nicole Powell (201). #NEXTGENERATIONSTANFORD: This group of Stanford student-athletes has embraced the challenge of continuing the Cardinal s storied tradition of women s basketball excellence. A couple eye-popping numbers for Stanford s young guns in the early going. Sophomore guard Lili Thompson, averaging 25.0 points per game, has scored 26 and 24 in Stanford s first two. She is the first Cardinal guard to put up 20+ in back-to-back games since Candice Wiggins scored 41 and 25 against Maryland (March 31) and Connecticut (April 6) in the 2008 Elite Eight and Final Four. In just her second collegiate outing, Kaylee Johnson pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. That total is the most for a Stanford freshman in a single game since Chiney Ogwumike grabbed 15 in the NCAA Tournament against Gonzaga on March 28, WHAT THEY RE REPLACING: Stanford lost three starters that combined for 35.5 points and 22.9 rebounds per game a season ago, averages which accounted for 43.7 percent of Stanford s scoring and 53.8 percent of its rebounding in This season is the first in a decade that Stanford will not have a returning Associated Press All-American (first, second or honorable mention) on its roster, a run that began with Candice Wiggins in That team also did not welcome back an AP All-American following Nicole Powell s graduation at the conclusion of the season. That squad went 32-3, 17-1 in the Pac-10, and advanced to the Elite Eight. Until this year, the Cardinal had also returned a WBCA All-American in every season since beginning that stretch with Jayne Appel in [Appel was an AP All-American Honorable Mention in 2007-

The season will be the first since , the year before Nnemkadi began as a freshman on The Farm, that Stanford will not have an Ogwumike on its roster. Mikaela Ruef made 36 starts and averaged career bests of 7.1 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game en route to All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention accolades, her first conference postseason nod. Sara James started 22 of her 33 games, scoring 2.3 points and grabbing 1.5 rebounds per outing. Entering this season, Stanford s roster had a combined 90 starts last year and accounted for 64 percent of Stanford 7,400 minutes in Orrange (31.9), Thompson (25.0), Bonnie Samuelson (15.3), Taylor Greenfield (16.6), Karlie Samuelson (15.5) and Erica McCall (10.5) are those returners that averaged more than 10 minutes per game in EFFICIENCY IS KEY: Stanford hasn t missed a lot of looks and has been extremely efficient from the floor. Stanford leads the Pac-12 in field goal percentage (.568), hitting on 67-of-118 attempts from the field. The Cardinal shot 64.9 percent from the floor (37-of-57) in the season opener against Boston College, the fifth-best mark in program history. Stanford hadn t shot that well since hitting at a 64.8 percent clip against Arizona State on Jan. 8, The last time the Cardinal was better was when it made a school record 67.3 percent of its attempts in a win over Oregon State on Feb. 20, Every starter has made at least half of their attempts, and the volume shooters, Lili Thompson (26 attempts) and Amber Orrange (21 attempts), have made 65.4 and 57.1 percent, respectively. Over the past seven-plus seasons, the Cardinal has accumulated a record of (.913) and been one of just two programs to reach the Final Four at least six times. Stanford is also one of just four teams to reach the national title game twice since In an even shorter window, Stanford is second in the country in both wins (172) and winning percent- Win #1 Dec. 1, 1978 Idaho vs. Northern Montana, Win # (date N/A) Ohio State vs. Michigan, Win #200 Feb. 12, 1988 Stanford vs. Washington, Win #300 Dec. 20, 1991 Stanford vs. Southern Illinois, Win #400 March 16, 1995 Stanford vs. UC Irvine (NCAA), Win #500 Nov. 26, 2000 Stanford vs. Pacific, Win #600 March 20, 2004 Stanford vs. Missouri, Win #700 Dec. 28, 2007 Stanford vs. Washington State, Win #800 Dec. 22, 2010 Stanford at San Francisco, Win #900 Nov. 27, 2013 Stanford vs. Florida Gulf Coast, (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico) VANDERVEER S CAREER MILESTONES Win #1 at Stanford Nov. 22, 1985 vs. Hawaii, Win #100 at Stanford Jan. 27, 1990 vs. Arizona State, Win #200 at Stanford Dec. 18, 1993 vs. SW Missouri St., Win #300 at Stanford Feb. 14, 1998 vs. USC, Win #400 at Stanford Nov. 30, 2002 vs. Kansas State, Win #500 at Stanford Feb. 11, 2006 at California, Win #600 at Stanford March 14, 2009 vs. UCLA, (at Los Angeles, Calif.) The Cardinal s 12 total Final Four appearances are third all-time among all schools in trips to women s basketball s marquee event. Additionally, Stanford s NCAA Tournament appearance in was its 28th, moving the Cardinal into third place past Louisiana Tech (27). WHAT S IN A NAME?: With the addition of freshman Kaylee Johnson to the roster, distinguishing between this year s Cardinal could prove difficult. 6-foot-3 freshman Kaylee (pronounced K-lee) Johnson, from Wyoming, is not the same person as 6-foot-3 sophomore Kailee (pronounced KY-lee) Johnson, from Oregon. The former has been dubbed Kayl by her teammates, while the elder Johnson (no relation) goes by KJ. The Johnsons are not to be confused with sophomore guard Lili Thompson, who thankfully plays a different position than her two frontcourt teammates with rhyming last names. There s not only Kaylee and Kailee, but also Karlie, as in Samuelson, a 6-foot sophomore guard from Huntington Beach, Calif. whose elder sister, Bonnie, is the team s third-leading returning scorer. Sophomore forward Erica McCall goes by Bird, to distinguish from senior forward Erica Payne, and was given the nickname by departed senior Mikaela Ruef. There are also a pair of Taylor s, in senior Greenfield and freshman Rooks. The name game also crosses over to the staff, the team s ports performance coach Brittany Keil shares the same first name as freshman Brittany McPhee. VanDerveer on the confusion: I mix them up all the time. PAC-12 DOMINANCE: Since the advent of Pac-12 women s basketball in , Stanford has been far and away the class of the conference in terms of victories and end-of-season awards and honors. The Cardinal has won outright or shared the regular-season title 23 times out of a possible 28, while the next team on the list, Washington, has won the conference title just three times. Stanford has also dominated the Pac-12 Tournament, capturing 10 of the 12 tournament titles. From Jan. 22, 2009 to Jan. 8, 2013 Stanford won a record 81 straight games against its Pac-12 foes (including Pac-10 and Pac-12 Tournament contests). Through the end of the regular season, the team s (.848) overall mark since and (.881) mark in Pac-12 regular-season play are both by far the top marks in the conference.
