4 Master of Science in Educational Psychology Standard Procedures Advising Expectations Students and adviss should meet befe during the student s first semester to plan a program of study. Future advising may occur in person via phone each semester as deemed appropriate by the advis and student. Adviss should keep a completed Program of Studies fm on file f each advisee. EDRS 590 Research Experience Equivalent Prerequisite Students who have not completed EDRS 590 a comparable research methodology course experience will be accepted provisionally and need to complete EDRS 590 within the first semester of the program. Grading Policies Students in a graduate program must maintain a GPA (B average). Only two grades of C will be allowed f completion of the master's degree. Grades of B better are required f all education course wk f licensure in the Teacher Preparation concentration. Transfer of Credit Other Graduate Programs: Up to 9 credits total may be transferred from another master's program at Gege Mason University another accredited institution with approval from the student's advis and the Educational Psychology Program Codinat. Credits cannot be me than six years old, must be graduate level, and must be graded (grade of B better, no pass/fail, no audit, etc.). At minimum, the last 18 credits of the MS degree must be earned in the Gege Mason University Educational Psychology program. Non-Degree Coursewk: Students accepted as non-degree students by the university may take educational psychology courses providing there is space available. However, students may only transfer 12 credits of non-degree coursewk into the master's degree and licensure program. This means that if students take courses as non-degree students and then are accepted into the master's and licensure program, only 12 credits of the non-degree coursewk may be transferred into the program. Students must complete the Graduate Transfer of Credit Request fm. Course Substitutions Independent Study : To maintain the integrity of the program, students may not take me than one independent study course (i.e., EDEP 798) as a substitute f a program course. Independent study courses must be supervised by a profess with expertise in that particular subject/field. The student s advis will direct the student to the appropriate profess. Independent study courses are not permitted f the following ce courses: EDEP 550, EDEP 551, EDRS 620, EDRS 621, EDRS 531 and the development ce course (e.g., EDUC 672, EDUC 539). Students may take capstone EDEP 798 EDEP 799 multiple semesters in der to complete their thesis independent capstone project. Concentration Electives within the Educational Psychology Program: All students complete at least two electives within their selected concentration (i.e., a) Learning, Cognition, and Motivation, b) Assessment, Evaluation, and Testing, c) Teacher Preparation). Depending on an individual s professional goals and interests, students may take one elective from one of the other program concentrations with advis approval.
5 Substitutions from Other Programs: Students are allowed to substitute up to two program ce and concentration courses with comparable courses offered at Gege Mason University. These courses must be approved by the students advis and be related to Educational Psychology and the student s academic and professional goals. Other Types of Course Substitutions: F other types of course substitutions not specified above (i.e., intensive summer wkshop), all program faculty must review and approve the substitution. To receive approval, students are to submit a written proposal, ideally in advance of the experience, that includes the following: The specific course the experience is meant f substitute f (Note: this cannot be a ce course) A rationale justification f why the experience should be considered and what it adds to the student s program of study Alignment of the experience with program goals The length of the experience The exact number of contact hours A syllabus agenda Any wk products (i.e., completed description of those to be completed) Program faculty will meet to discuss and vote on approval of the proposal. Program faculty will review the final wk products and any evaluation infmation received to officially grant credit. Students cannot have me than one such substitution as part of their program and such a substitution would count as an independent study. Thesis Independent Research Project Capstone Experience Specific guidelines f Thesis and Independent Research Project are available on the program website ( F program planning purposes, students and adviss should be aware of the following: The students must register f EDEP 799 EDEP 798 (Educational Psychology Thesis Independent Research Project) f the semester in which the Thesis/Project requirement is to be fulfilled. Students must register f a minimum of 3 credit hours f the first semester wk f the thesis/project is completed. In subsequent semesters, a variable number of credits (i.e., 1-6 credits) may be taken. Students should not register f me than two courses in addition to EDEP 799 EDEP 798 without written permission of the Thesis Committee Chair Project Ment. The student is required to contact the Thesis Committee Chair Project Ment one semester pri to the semester in which they wish to enroll in EDEP 799 EDEP 798. Registration f EDEP 799 and EDEP 798 requires that the Individualized Section fm be filled out and signed by the Associate Dean f Teaching and Academic Affairs, Dr. Ellen Rodgers. Students must submit the final product (e.g., paper) approved by the thesis committee project ment by the last week of classes the student intends to graduate.
