4 LEARNING AND TEACHING Teaching responsibilities during the last academic year Programme Unit Level of study: Faculty of Foreign Languages English Department Undergraduate studies and Post graduate studies: My contribution: Conduct lectures and seminars, mentor young aspiring academics, perform advanced research, engagement in external fund-raising projects Teaching and assessment responsibilities: Evidence of your contribution to enhancing the student experience in your programme/units e.g. teaching plan, design and carry out assessment as an ongoing part of learning and teaching and periodically use specific assessments, tests or examinations as appropriate. I constantly work in inspiring and motivating students to the development of their critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills and scholarly values involve learners fully in assessment and help them to understand what is expected Encourage students to adopt research-like ways of learning, and engage students as active, questioning participants who use the inquiry and research processes of their discipline to learn. evaluate evidence of learning to contribute to profiles and report on learners achievements and progress. I incorporate primary sources, recent research discoveries and new knowledge in my teaching. Additional comments (including actions to enhance learning) I design the course syllabi on students learning needs and approaches. I try to find out about the ways my students are learning and the ways they are relating to the subject, and adjust my teaching. I am approachable and provide empathic and effective guidance to students; where possible assisting students from equity and other demographic subgroups to participate and achieve success in my courses I always try to enhance teaching beyond my own teaching in context, discipline or profession, and seek opportunities to engage in mentoring junior staff.
5 Summary of significant personal achievements in teaching My most important accomplishment as an associate professor is not that I have become an excellent teacher. Instead, my central achievement is that I have become an integrated teacher, scholar, and citizen - a true university professor. To appreciate what I mean by this claim, I must provide a little history. In my first years as an instructor, I thought the sole task was to deliver the best courses possible. I learned whatever I needed to master, experimented with numerous techniques and strategies, developed new courses and constantly revised old ones. The students evaluations, in combination with their performance on papers and exams, gave me the feedback I needed to determine whether I was progressing as a teacher. Only a few years after I began, I started to receive university recognition for my efforts. In 2001 I was honoured with the Teacher of the Year, bestowed by the Associated Professors from Indiana University and South East European University in Tetovo. As my scholarly visibility grew, opportunities to integrate my teaching and research expanded even more. I was frequently asked to deliver guest lectures and to lead seminars in undergraduate programs at other colleges and universities. Such accomplishments no doubt contributed to my being selected a Fulbright Scholar for the to conduct a post-doctoral research and teach a one-semester course at Fordham University in New York, NY, USA. This very privileged scholarship allowed me to integrate research and teaching in a manner that will contribute to develop new research projects.
6 RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP Summary of current research and scholarship I was extremely honoured to be the recipient of the Fulbright scholarship award for for post-doctoral research and teaching a one-semester course at Fordham University, New York, NY, USA. I enjoyed teaching a semester-long master s course on Sociology of Language Acquisition (CTGE 5840-SLA). I was really excited to work with American students. The most memorable experience was the first time I stood in front of my new students and was introduced by my faculty advisor Dr. Carolyn Brown and my colleague Dr. Aida Nevarezalatorre. A very warm and friendly atmosphere was created followed by relevant questions and a good academic discussion. I can say that teaching played a great role during my visit there, as I got a lot of pleasure and satisfaction from it. In addition to teaching, I was invited to present several lectures at doctoral program at the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Department. Along with teaching, I was constantly working on my research. I explored the teacher training programs, their curriculum and syllabi at five universities in New York. In collaboration with my American colleagues from Fordham University, I have been visiting five different universities in New York: Fordham University, City University of New York (CUNY), Long Island University, Queen's College and New York University and have been conducting several interviews with program directors and teacher training educators. In addition to teaching and research, I was also involved in many activities connected to my area of study. One of them was the NYS TESOL 41st Annual Conference. I have gained a lot from these activities. They have helped me greatly in developing my knowledge and keeping it updated. Actually, they did not only sharpen and developed the knowledge I had, but also helped me perform more highly skilled and demanding tasks. Summary of research and scholarship in the previous three years I am a socio and psycholinguist. My scholarship is grounded in theories and methods found in the field of social psychology of language with application to language acquisition and use, language teaching and language policy (Bilingualism and Multilingualism) I have been educated at the University of Vienna, where I was awarded a Ph.D. scholarship in Linguistics in Prior to the PhD degree, I had completed many professional development programs for teacher training, Educational Leadership and Curriculum Development, awarded by the American Embassy in Skopje, USAID and the British Council in Skopje. I got the trainings for these programs at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, the George Washington University, Washington D.C., the Oxford Brooks University, Oxford, GB and the South East University in Tetovo. I have benefited from the outstretched and guiding hands of several exceptional academicians who invested immeasurable personal and professional resources into my training. It is largely because of the mentoring of these scholars combined with institutional supports afforded me that I am inspired to strive for excellence in all three areas of academe: research, service, and teaching.
7 Summary of significant personal achievements in research and scholarship My research experience began my freshman year and has spanned from field of Linguistics to Education. I have initiated and conducted multiple independent projects as well as assisted with data collection for larger projects. My field research has taken me to the USA, Austria, Spain, Great Britain and Germany. Overall, I have presented the results of my researches at conferences and seminars; have paper of my own research and have contributed to their publication. I gained further research experience assisting my PhD supervisors, Dr. Christine Dalton-Puffer (Vienna University) and Dr. Ulrike Jessner (Innsbruck University), gathered data on the sociology and psychology of multilinigual language acquisition. I described my role in the project in an oral presentation given to the Vienna University doctoral research seminars. My current research is examining the role EFL teaching in primary secondary and high schools in Macedonia. I plan on presenting this project September 2013 at the 25th Annual EAIE (European Association for International Education) Conference. In addition to my research interest, I have been associated with Scientific Journal International for a bit more than a year and my experience has been of utmost high quality. The intellectual productions, the review processes, and the published works do not differ at all, from any other ranked academic journals. I have found that the parameters, the array of diversity, and the involvement of the authors is of enormously high standards. Scientific Journals International is a pioneer of open access publishing and it abides to the highest criteria of intellectual research, I have ever been exposed.
