4 Winter 2015 Courses Faith in Verse: Christian Themes in Poetry Instructor: Sarah Jarvis Historically, many lasting literary works have owed a great debt to the faith of the author, who may have written so-called religious verse as a devotional expression of his or her own faith, or as an approved subject matter for a literary form that authorities in the church might have assumed were employed more for other purposes, perhaps less august (e.g. John Donne). Specifically, the literary form of poetry and faith have had a long and fruitful relationship, which may have been relegated to hymn or praise song lyrics in public consciousness. This course explores this rich partnership in historical and modern poetry. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore their own creative and analytical writing techniques. Students will apply their learning to produce and publish an article or literary work each for a revived edition of the Canterbury College Journal. Classes will combine lectures, discussions, directed readings, and writing workshops. Note: this course is open to students of all beliefs and outlooks. Dates: Tuesdays; January 27 March 31 (excluding Tuesday of the March Break). Time: 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Sarah Jarvis was educated in Ontario and Scotland, and has worked as a secondary school teacher and an instructor at the St. Clair College of Arts and Technology. Sarah brings to her teaching extensive skills in writing and publishing. She is very involved in her faith community, All Saints Anglican Church.
5 Living Spirituality through Music Instructors: Norman King & Jane Ripley Winter 2015 Courses An exploration of the power of music to express and evoke our deepest humanity; to heal, renew, and develop the individual; and to put us in touch with the sacredness and mystery of creation. A consideration of the connection of music with silence, listening, and the discovery of one s authentic voice; music s essentially relational and communal dimensions; its blend of inner depth and outer expression; its link with presence, memory, and longing; and its relationship with religion and spirituality. Examples will be drawn from classical music, spirituals, folk songs, and other sources; sacred and secular expressions; instrumental and vocal forms. No musical background is required. Dates: 5 Saturdays: January 31; February 7, 21, 28; March 7 Times: 10:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. (With 1 hr. break for lunch) Dr. J. Norman King is Professor Emeritus in Religion and Culture at the University of Windsor, holds the Stephen Jarislowsky Chair in Religion and Conflict at Assumption University, and is the Acting Principal and Director of Theology at Iona College. Prof. F. Jane Ripley has taught piano, voice, and music theory for many years in private practice and in the Public School system. Jane is also a Sessional Lecturer in Music at Assumption University and Iona College. Jane has considerable experience as a Music Director for congregations of many different denominations. 5
