4 Policy on Sustainable Practices 2003 UC Policy on Sustainable Practices, updated in January 2006 and March March 2008 Statement on University of California Sustainability Programs. Recommended dbuilding upon the University s record of environmental stewardship and requested an assessment of several policy areas. September 2009 Policy on Sustainable Practices includes sustainable foodservices, revisions/updates in areas of green building design, climateprotection practices, and sustainable transportation practices.

Sustainable Food Practices Campus Foodservice Operations 20% sustainable food products by the year 2020 Certify one facility by December 2010 through (1) green business program or (2) Green Seal s Restaurants and FoodService Operations certification program or (3) the Green Restaurant Association certification program.

12 UCSD Accomplishments UCSD Accomplishments Total cost of ownership, inclusive of sustainability, used to evaluate the most effective purchase. RFPs have a dedicated section asking about sustainability for evaluation purposes. Electronic products must be shipped with energy conservation features enabled. Paper contracts promote recycled paper but do not phase out virgin due to lack of a campus mandate. Agreements have resulted in some recycled paper beingcheaper than virgin. We are further negotiating recycled content rates and educating campus to make the right decision.

14 UCSD Accomplishments UCSD Accomplishments Soap Products Approached Strategically Sourced Suppliers with an Informal Bid on restroom hand soap Potential Savings of $22,000 $45,000 Challenges refillable is most cost effective and generates least waste but there are contamination issues larger container capacity means less cartridges in waste stream but more cardboard d packaging.
