1 A. General report 1. Host institution and exact dates of semester abroad My host institution was Universitas Indonesia (UI) Depok campus, located in South-Jakarta. I flew to Indonesia on August 11th 2014 and returned by the end of December. Most of the final exams are done around Christmas. Regarding flight dates: when selected for UI, I would recommend to book a flexible flight ticket, since we only knew the dates of the end of our semester somewhere in November. They don t have much of an agenda at UI. 2. Contact with home faculty, preparation and journey During my study abroad I barely had contact with the home faculty. Only in the beginning I contacted mr. Elhorst because the courses I was about to take were different than the ones described in my learning agreement. He replied my quickly and said my new courses were fine. As a preparation to my journey I had vaccinations at GGD; typhoid fever, hepatitis A&B and DTP are recommended. Furthermore, I went to the Indonesian embassy in The Hague to get a Socio-Cultural Visit VISA. I flew with Turkish Airlines, the route was Amsterdam-Istanbul-Jakarta. The return ticket had cost me 615,- which is fairly cheap, and the flight was just fine. Just check which airlines offer the cheapest fares on websites like skyscanner or kayak. Making your actual booking at the website of the airline of your choice might even be cheaper than booking via skyscanner, but skyscanner gives a proper indication of which flights are cheap. Garuda Indonesia is the only airline that offers direct flights on the route Amsterdam-Jakarta. 3. Residence abroad Before I went to Indonesia I arranged a Socio-Cultural Visit VISA, as mentioned above. This visa is valid for 60 days, and after that you have to extend it every month at the immigration office in Depok. It only allows for a single entry into Indonesia. After all, this Socio-Cultural VISA was rather useless to me since I travelled to Malaysia in September and after that I just bought VISA on Arrival for the rest of my stay in Indonesia. VISA on Arrival is valid for 1 month and can be extended once at the immigration office in Depok. When going to Indonesia on VOA this means that you have to travel out of the country at least every 60 days. Regarding the costs: both the Socio-Cultural VISA as well as the VOA will cost you approximately 30,- a month. So, if you plan to travel a lot (and also outside the country) you might not need the Socio-Cultural VISA and go just for a VOA. But if you plan to stay in Indonesia for a longer time period, the Socio-Cultural VISA might be the better option. I lived in Margonda Residence 2 during my study abroad. Margonda Residence offers fairly good accommodation with furnished and airconditioned rooms in an 18-floor building. In the lobby of the building there s a small supermarket, laundry services, a travel agency and outside there is a swimming pool and a tennis court. Margonda Residence is only a 10 minute walk from UI campus and when you are on campus you can take a bus or ojeg to the faculty of economics. All in all, Margonda Residence was a very nice place to live. Only the azan, which woke everyone up every morning between 4 and 5 a.m., is something I could not get used to during my stay. After we arrived, we went to the international office of UI and met Windi there. She showed us around and helped us with some necessary shopping such as bed linnen and an Indonesian simcards. This really surprised me! I could not even imagine the international office staff of the FEB of Groningen going away from their office for half a day to do some shopping and having lunch with international students! But in Indonesia this is possible. As mentioned above, these people don t really live according to an agenda. If anything comes up, they just do it. Furthermore there were also two introduction days at UI which mostly incurred waiting, subscribing for courses and getting your yellow UI jacket and student card. Unfortunately, student life at UI is not very vibrant. Indonesian students have quite an other perception of the word student life than how we know it in Groningen. For them, student life happens mostly in class or at university campus. UI is a top-rated university in Indonesia (they

2 sometimes call it the Harvard of Indonesia ) and every student is particularly proud to study there. Furthermore, Indonesians like to spend their free time at malls, do some shopping, karaoke or go to the movies. Since Indonesia is an Islamic country, most people don t drink any alcohol and go to bed early. However, Jakarta has some fairly nice clubs and bars to offer. In Depok you won t find any of this, but you can easily take the commuter train or a taxi to get into Jakarta. The language spoken is Bahasa Indonesia. It is supposed to be quite an easy language to learn since it barely incurs any form of grammar, but I didn t even try to learn it. However, after a while you will know some words and how to express yourselves in for example a warung or restaurant. In my free time I was away most of the time. I think I only spend about 4 or 5 weekends in Depok during the semester. Since I had a convenient schedule with which I only had classes on Tuesday and Wednesday, this left me a lot of travel-opportunities. 4. Grant I received 2/3 of the Marco Polo grant before I left to Indonesia, this was 630,- and will receive the other 1/3 of the Marco Polo grant after handing in this report. I think this grant is just enough to cover your flight ticket to Jakarta. I was lucky to book a very cheap flight, but most flights will cost around 800 euros for a return ticket. If you want to travel or do something extra you should save up money in advance. About living expenses; life in Indonesia can be fairly cheap. The rent at Margonda Residence 2 was about 135,-/month and water&electricity expenses will be roughly 30,-/month. Food can also be particularly cheap in Indonesia. Meal prices start around 0,70 per meal and can be up to 4,- per meal if you go to a somewhat more expensive restaurant. Alcohol, however, is quite expensive everywhere since Indonesia is a Muslim-country. However, since I travelled a lot my semester has costed me quite some money, and my advice is to certainly save up some money in advance if you can. Being able to travel while abroad will really enrich your study abroad experience and will make it much more fun! I think when going to Depok, it might be quite depressing if you will not be able to get away there every once a while. Also Jakarta offers some things to see or do, but it still remains an overcrowded, dirty and smoggy city with lots of poverty, in which you don t want to bee stuck for too long. Furthermore, before you leave the Netherlands you will probably have to make some costs on vaccinations. Hepatitis A&B, typhoid fever and DTP are recommended. Furthermore GGD also recommends Rabies, but I did not take that one since it was about 300,-. I was glad I didn t take it since I haven t been in a single situation where a dog, monkey or cat was in the position to accidentally bite or scratch me. Also DEET is recommended to bring with you to Indonesia. However, this can be bought very cheap at Indomaret, so don t bring more than 1 flask with you since this stuff is rather expensive in the Netherlands. 5. Study In general, studying at UI was not very difficult. Lecture sessions lasts for 2,5 hours straight and every course has at least 1 lecture a week and some courses also offer tutorials once a week, which last for 1 hour. Five subjects had to be taken in order to obtain 30 ECTS (6 ECTS per subject) and you will follow all these five courses the entire semester. The semester will be divided in two blocks. Every block incurs 7 weeks of lecturing and 1,5 week of examination. Around the end of October/beginning of November there will be mid-term exams and by the end of December the end-terms will take place. The level of education is fairly low in Indonesia, so it should not be difficult to obtain your 30 ECTS. However, study at UI sometimes takes quite some time since teachers tend to give extensive assignments just the evening before the deadline. Once again here: Indonesians don t live according to an agenda and everything changes all the time. Therefore you must be(come) kind of flexible. This also meant that every week at least one lecture was cancelled due to some silly reason. Some lecturers held make-up classes by the end of the block in order to have taught all the exam material. UI had not much study facilities. Nearly nowhere on campus WiFi was working, and the library is a meeting point for Indonesian students where they spend their free time. University Library is not known as a place for studying in Indonesia. Despite not having much study facilities, the campus, lecture rooms and buildings were all in very good condition and well-equipped. The International Office staff was very nice and helped us with everything we asked for. Also it was nice that the

3 Faculty and International Office staff all knew our names and who we were, since there are not that many exchange students from outside Asia. 6. Other relevant info you want to share with our future exchange students If you go to Indonesia as a non-asian, you will be stared at and hear Bule! being yelled at you all the time. Also, many people will be trying to make pictures of you. Indonesians are not used to seeing many white people around (except for on Bali and Gili) and you will encounter discrimination for sure. Girls even more than boys. Furthermore, be aware that Indonesia is a Muslim-country which implies that it is considered very rude to wear summer dresses, shorts and tanktops. Shoulders and knees should be covered. But here once again, on Bali and Gili you can just live a normal summer holiday life since these area s are used to many tourists and Islam is not the dominating religion here. 7. Summary impression of the study period abroad and any advice/suggestions/tips for students or academic staff who will be involved with the host institution in the future All in all, my study abroad in Indonesia and travelling through Asia was a fun as well as an informative experience. I have learned a lot about different cultures and developed different perceptions on certain topics. If you have the chance to go abroad to Asia: just do it! It might sometimes be compelling but you will learn a lot from it. Indonesia in particular might sometimes offer a compelling environment since it is a developing country and does not always offer all the western facilities and structure that we are used too. But this made me realise even more how rich even the poorest in the Netherlands actually are
