Major/Minor: English/Psychology Country: UK Program: Univ. of Sussex Term & Year Abroad: Instructors - What were they like when compared to UCSB instructors? They were very relaxed and willing to help you. If I wanted to take a course, they made sure I got in. - Could you call them by their first names? Yes. I think it was actually expected. - Was the student/instructor relationship more formal than at UCSB? No, it was a lot more of an almost peer relationship. They regarded you as an equal. - Were they available for help during office hours? Yes. My professors were always really kind to help if I ever came in and had questions. One professor even allowed me to work in a psychology lab for him. Courses - Were the courses more difficult when compared to UCSB courses? No, but the way courses worked was quite different. It s a lot more independent, so you have to be good and motivating yourself to do extra research and work hard. My GPA was just a little lower than usual (by literally.1) so it was generally comparable. - Was the grading system similar to UCSB? There is a grade conversion scale, but basically - How did the course structure differ? Ex) did you have many assignments or just finals? There were a couple assignments and readings we d discuss in class, but the majority (maybe 80%-100% of the grade) was finals. - Did you have oral and/or written exams? I had written exams. - Was the final exam schedule flexible or inflexible? It was pretty inflexible. You had to take them at the end of the year with the regular British students, and they weren t very willing to reschedule your exams for flights. - What kind of academic support, if any, did you receive? The uni actually has a really nice system set up with the departments so that you have an international academic advisor in your department. - Did you find you needed to be more independent and take more initiative abroad? Yes.
- Was classroom participation expected? Yes. All my classes were much more like seminars. - How were the host university courses different than UCSB courses? - Were classes usually on certain days/times and for how long? Usually just once or twice a week for 1-2 hours. - What is the class culture like? How important was it to be punctual? Could you eat/drink in class? You really didn t eat in class. It was too small and that would be awkward. Language - In which languages were the courses offered? English - What language did you take your courses in? English - If you took your courses in a foreign language, please provide info about your overall experience, difficulty of courses, language acquisition, placement exams, etc. Host University - How large is the university? Student enrollment and approx campus size (smaller than UCSB)? Is it an urban campus with many tall buildings or just a few building? Smaller than UCSB - Do the local students live on campus, at home, or off campus? Freshers are on campus, the rest are off - If not located in the city center, o How far or close is it to the city? 5 miles o What type of public transportation could you take? cost? Buses: 2.50 pound return Train: 2.30 pound return less frequent o Could students take cabs -cost? Yes, but I don t know how much. Maybe 12 pounds to the city center o How long would it take to get to the city center?
40 minutes by bus, 9 minutes by train - Are there student clubs on campus that UC students could join? Yes, there s a whole system of them. You will find out about them during freshers week - Is there a bookstore on campus? Where did you get your books? Yes, but I got most of my books from the library - Is there a computer lab on campus? Or, should students bring laptops? Yes, there are plenty of computer labs but I would still recommend bringing your lap top. Note that wifi is not that widespread at this uni, including in the dorms - What types of establishments are in the university s neighborhood? (cafes, stores, etc) There are pubs and cafes on campus, and a tea house in the neighboring village, literally a 20 minute walk away Housing - What types of accommodations are available to UC students? Dorms, or home stays, or finding your own place - How close are they to campus? Dorms are on campus. The rest varies - How did you find your housing? The Uni sent me information - Where did you live and with whom? Park Village's dorm on campus. With 11 other girls in our house - If you lived off campus, was it difficult to find an apartment and roommate? - Were the rooms nicer or not than I.V./UCSB dorms? NOPE. They were terribly dirty. But you get your own room and sink so you can make that nice. I just needed to share kitchen/bathroom with 12 girls so it was pretty gross. - Was it more expensive than living in I.V.? How much was a typical rent cost in US dollars? Yes, it was 86 pounds per WEEK so probably around $650-$700/month - How/who did you pay for housing? American credit card, and dealt with the international fees
Food - What was the food like? At restaurants, mostly good. - Where did you eat most of your meals? Cafeterias, restaurants, street vendors, etc? There were restaurants in the city and on campus that were good. There were two pubs on campus, a crepe café in Richmond building, and some great places in Brighton. - How much was an average meal? 6 pounds - What time of day did people eat lunch/dinner? The regular times - Would it be difficult for vegetarians to find meals? No, there s always something Travel/Safety - If not discussed above, describe the public transportation system around your host university/city? Mostly people used Brighton and hove buses, but you could also use the southern railway train system - Did you feel safe in your host city? Are there tips you would offer future students? Yes, but you wanted to be smart and not walk alone at night in the city - Describe the public transportation in your host country? Buses/Trains were the most prevalent forms - Was it difficult/easy to travel to neighboring countries? Yes. Easy Jet left from Gatwick airport which was only a 40 minute train ride away Host City/Country - What was the weather like? COLD! And pretty gloomy. It was cold even in sunshine. - Describe your host city? which California/US city is it similar to (if any)? San Francisco/Santa Barbara. San Fran for culture, SB for the location (seaside, with a small downtown that mostly just ahs shopping) - What were some interesting/fun things that you did in the host city?
Royal Pavilion, shopping in the lanes, riding the bus, sitting in parks - How international was your host city in terms of tourism, cultural diversity, and international businesses? VERY international. There were many foreign restaurants and English learning students Culture - Describe the cultural differences that you observed/encountered. o Time & punctuality people tend to be early, but they are very relaxed o Eye contact & staring fine o Relationships same as America o More formal dress in general, for women, for school, etc? seemed far grungier, even for class o Alcohol consumption way more the norm. even my professor brought wine for us to drink o What culture shock did you go through? I had a hard time understanding their accents at first, and it was frustrating having my American accent constantly commented upon. The drinking was also so prevalent and I didn t really know how to hang out with people outside of that context of pub life o Other? Banking - Were credit cards widely accepted? yes - Did you open a local bank account? Was it easy? no - If you did not open a local bank account, was it easy to withdraw money from the ATM? Which banks were popular & had low ATM fees? Were there ATMs on campus? - yes
