1 國立交通大學交換學生心得報告姓名 Kitipop Huangthanapan 學號系所及年級 GMBA 101 交換期間研修學校 / 前往地點自 103 年 3 月 1 日至 103 年 6 月 5 日 Yonsei University 延世大學 / 韓國ㄧ心得報告 Yonsei at a glance: Yonsei University is one of the best universities in South Korea. According to the Guardian s World University Ranking 2013, Yonsei ranked 114th globally, 16th in Asia and its was among top 5 universities in Korea. In term of Business School, Yonsei s Global MBA program is one of the most expensive MBA program in Korea. There are 4 MBA programs at Yonsei university: Global MBA (Full-time), Corporate MBA, Financial MBA and Executive MBA (all part-time). I was in GMBA program. The average age of the class is 30s or older. Location: Yonsei University is located in Sinchon which is one of the shopping area for teenagers in Seoul. It takes around 5-10 minutes walk from university to the nearest MRT (Sinchon MRT). Right beside the university is Ewha Women University which is one of the most expensive woman-only university in Korea (and is also famous for beautiful girls) and around that university is also another shopping area. Take MRT one station away from Sinchon and you will find Hongdae university MRT which is probably the crowded teenagers spot in Seoul. There are many shops, club and eating places in this area and crowded especially in weekend. Yonsei is also around 15 minutes bus ride to

2 Myeongdong and 40 minutes to Gangnam. Seoul is a very big city, so going anywhere would take lot of time. Getting there and away: From Incheon airport to university it is best to take a bus (as MRT would require minutes walk to dorm and need to change the line. Bus station is nearer to dorm). Upon exiting the custom, you will first have to go to the bus ticket counter to buy ticket (one way around 11,000 won). Then when you are on bus, you have to get off at the station call Ewha University Back gate (the Korean pronunciation is E-dae-hu-mun). I have attached the map on how to walk from the bus stop to dorm (if you stay in International house or SK global house) because it is a little confusing looking at the map. Travelling in Korea is easy and convenient. For most of the place, you can take bus or high speed rail. If you want to go somewhere quite far away e.g. Bhusan, then it might be cheaper to buy 2-days or 3-days pass. Please see these links for more information regarding the pass and prices; and It is sometimes also cheaper to fly using domestic airlines. There are several domestic airlines you might want to check out: jejuair, Busan Air, Jinair and T-Way airline. Some of these airline also offer cheap ticket to and from Taiwan. Please check website for more detail.

3 Google Map does not work well in Korea!! You can still use public transportation mode in Google map but you cannot use the walking mode. All Korean people use Naver map instead of Google Map. However, there are no English version of Naver map and you will need to know a little but of Korean in order to use it. However, once you know how to navigate the map, your life will become much easier. Most of the route are easily accessible by bus and sometimes its much faster to use bus than train. Studying Korean It would be a shame if you re already in Korea but not studying Korean. Most Korean people do not speak good English (but some shopkeepers do speak Chinese). If you go on exchange in the first semester, you may take Korean classes offer to international students in GMBA free of charge. However, if you go on second semester, then it is unlikely that GMBA would open another Korean class just for you. So you may have to sit-in (you won t get credit for this) in some of the Bachelor level classes (you have to contact the professor yourself and most professor wont accept sit-in). Yonsei university do have its own Korea Language Institute call KLI (Korean Language Institute), which offer many Korean classes but you will have to pay for it and you will have to apply this in advance. However, as far as I know, KLI pretty much focus on writing and grammar, so you wont be able to speak that much. The better alternative to this (and if I can go back in time I would do this) is to take classes in Sogang university which is also in Sinchon area and near Yonsei university. Sogang University s Korean classes are famous for its focus on speaking and I ve heard that many students can speak basic stuffs within one month of studying. There are many classes offer by Sogang so you d better check the website yourself. Drinking and Clubbing!! You will be surprised by how much Korean people can drink. There are many types of alcohol in Korea but the most famous one would be Soju (because its cheap and strong). There are also So-Mag which is Magju (beer) mix with Soju. This would make you drunk pretty fast. Korean people would usually drink around three rounds before going to club (its like pre-game). There are many etiquettes associating to drinking. Firstly, do not pour the drink to your own glass! So who would pour it for me? Just leave the bottle near your empty glass and someone in the table should recognise it and pour it for you. Secondly, do not pour the drink when the cup is not yet empty. Thirdly, if you re drinking with someone older than you then you should turn your head sideway while drinking. There are many things to learn and you will probably learn this along the way. For clubbing, there are 3 main place for clubbing in Seoul. First one is in Hongdae area which is nearer to university. This is mainly for university students and younger crowd. Second one is in Itaewon. This is more popular for foreigners and if you re

4 gay, then you can find many gay bars in this area. The third one is in Gangnam. This is more of a fanciers area and the crowd is more biased toward working people. Gangnam is also very far from the university. However, most people will go to club around midnight or later (they will have pre-game before that) and club usually close around 6-7 am, so you can take the MRT back to university if you dont want to pay for taxi. Internet and Sim Card Most places in Seoul offers free wifi. However, it would also be convenient to open your own sim card and data plan. The closest place to buy sim card is at the shop in SK Global Plaza (in SK Global House dorm). However, you will need to wait around 3 days before you can buy sim-card. You can also purchase internet data plan here. Shopping & Grocery Despite all the craze about shopping in Korean, things in Korea are not cheap. Once you get there, you ll probably want to buy a lot of stuffs for your dorm. One of the cheapest place to buy is Daiso (Daiso is usually 1,000 won or 30 NTD. Daiso in Taiwan is 60 NTD). There is one Daiso near Ewha University and one near Sinchon MRT. For grocery, you can buy stuffs from Grand Mart (Sinchon MRT Exit 8). Otherwise, there are local market nearby university (one bus stop away) which sell fresh vegetables and meats much cheaper than Grand Mart. I usually go there for shopping. To get there, you need to take bus number 470 and get off after the bus get out of tunnel. The market is called Yongcheon market.

5 If you want to buy something online, then go to gmarket.com. This is probably one of the biggest online stores in Korea and you can find nearly everything there. The postal service in Korea is also very good. Usually the goods would be delivered on the same day or on the next day. Moreover, many Korean would go to outlet to buy stuffs because its much cheaper there. The nearest outlet to Seoul is in Paju which is around one hour from Seoul. There are 2 outlets in Paju which is Lotte outlet and Premium Outlet. Banking Everyone in Korea use card and nearly every place in Korea would accept card. This is pretty convenient because sometimes I would just go outside only with my phone and card and I would still survive. You can open a bank account at Woori Bank which is located in Student Union building opposite to library. To open bank account you would need 2 ID (so bring passport and Alien Resident Card. If you don t have Alien Resident Card yet, then take your Taiwan national identity card). Money Exchange You can exchange money at the bank or you can find many money exchange place in Myeongdong. You may have to shop around to find good deals. Usually I would go to the shop near Chinese embassy in Myeongdong because the rate is better there than shops in the middle of Myeongdong.
