1 INTC 328 Historical of Rhetoric & Communication Winter 2014 Online Course Instructor: Dr. Lucy Xing Lu Loop Office: Room1807, 14 East Jackson LPC Office: TBA Course Description: Rhetoric is a discipline with a history of over 2,500 years. This course offers an overview of Western rhetorical tradition and examines how the historical foundations of rhetoric shape human consciousness, persuasive styles, language arts, and communication patterns. We will explore the influence of culture and social contexts in which rhetorical theories are formulated and contested, read primary and secondary materials on classical and contemporary rhetoric. We will critique and apply rhetorical theories to current social and political issues. Finally, we will compare Western rhetoric to rhetoric of nonwestern traditions. This class is fully online. Students are responsible for following the online setup on reading/listening to powerpoint presentations, reviewing content materials, engaging in discussions, taking quizzes, and turning in a paper all online. You are welcome to contact me through or make an appointment to meet with me in person if you need help or have any questions regarding the course. This course carries Liberal Studies credit in the Understanding the Past Learning Domain. It belongs to the geographical categories of Western societies. Students may not take more than one U. P. course in any given geographical category. Learning Objectives: 1. To explain social/cultural factors and contexts in which rhetoric is emerged and formulated. 2. To familiarize with rhetorical concepts, theories, and practice throughout the history of Western civilization. 3. To name major classical and contemporary thinkers and rhetoricians and describe their contributions to rhetoric. 4. To compare Western rhetorical traditions with rhetorical voices and practices of women and non-western cultural groups. 5. To apply rhetorical concepts to the analysis of contemporary persuasive and communicative practices. Reading Materials: Herrick, James The History and Theory of Rhetoric: An Introduction. 5 th Pearson, Edition. A Reading Packet of primary rhetorical texts (placed on D2L)

2 Assignments: 1. Online Discussions: The online discussion is the forum for your participation, analysis, and application of content materials you have learned from this class. You are expected to actively participate in online discussions. At the end of each chapter, there is a list of Questions for Discussion. I have selected two questions from the list in each chapter. You will choose one question out of the two for your first posting which has to be done by midnight every Wednesday of the week. From Thursday to midnight Sunday of every week, you can respond to other students posts on the selected question as many times as you want. Some weeks of the quarter we read one chapter from the textbook; some weeks of the quarter we read two chapters from the textbook. When we read two chapters of the textbook, it means you will address two selected questions from two different chapters. The quantity and quality of your response to these questions will be counted as your participation grade. I will read every discussion post and evaluate your responses based on the following criteria: 1). Showing the evidence of having done the readings; e.g. addressing the question by making reference to the readings and showing the application of rhetorical theories and concepts. 2). Showing critical thinking ability in critiquing/evaluating the statements made by rhetoricians. 3). Showing thoughtfulness and completeness in covering the question. 4). Showing the ability of making connections to personal experiences, current events, and relevant rhetorical acts and artifacts such as rallies, speeches, commercials, TV shows, art works, online (and social media) communications. 5). Providing evidence and examples to support your statements. 6). Number of times of your posts for each chapter and for responding to other students posts. 7). Addressing or responding to the selected question in a timely manner (Responses to the question from each chapter have to be placed online during the time when the chapter is covered. Responses to discussion questions from previous chapters will not be accepted.) 8). Helping cultivate a healthy online learning environment; e.g. netiquette, greeting others by name and closing by a signature, offering constructive comments, respecting others perspectives; academic integrity. 9). Free of grammatical and spelling errors in your written responses. There are 22 discussion questions total, two from each chapter of the textbook and you respond to one of the two questions on by midnight Wednesday of each week, followed by responses to other students posts by midnight Sunday every week. 25 points total for participation grade. I will give you a mid-term point grade based on the above criteria for your participation. A detailed grading criteria are specified under Discussion Guidelines in Week 0 of the Content page.

3 2. Quizzes: There are 5 quizzes throughout the quarter testing on concepts, theories, rhetoricians in the history of rhetoric and communication. (50 points). You will take each quiz online within the specified due date/time (see the course policies for the quizzes). Your answers will be automatically recorded and graded. 3. Analysis Paper: Choose a rhetorical artifact (e.g. speeches, town-hall discussions, sermons, letters, art work, media or digital texts) and analyze it by applying relevant rhetorical theories covered in class. The artifact can be from a classical period or drawn from contemporary societies. The paper is 7-10 pages and worth 25 points. The paper is due on March 17 th. You turn in the paper in the drop box on D2L. A detailed description of the assignment is placed on d2l. Grade Summary Participation 25 points 5 Quizzes 50 points Analysis Paper 25 points Total 100 points The following scale will be used to determine the final letter grade: A= C+=77-79 A-=90-93 C=73-76 B+=87-89 C-=70-72 B =83-86 D+=67-69 B- =80-82 D=60-66 F=59 and below Descriptions for Grades: A Grade: Demonstrate an outstanding performance in all the class assignments. Participate in online discussions actively and contribute significantly. Show an enthusiastic learning attitude. B Grade: Demonstrate a good to above average performance in all class assignments Participate in online discussions actively. Show a good understanding of the learned materials and a positive learning attitude. C Grade: Demonstrate a satisfactory performance in class assignments. Participate in online discussions occasionally. Show a basic understanding of the learned materials and a positive learning attitude. D Grade: Demonstrate an unsatisfactory performance in class assignments. Participate in online discussions at a minimum level. Show a poor understanding of the learned materials and low motivation for learning. F Grade: Demonstrate an incompetent performance in class assignments. Fail to participate in online discussions. Show a negative learning attitude and no respect for different perspectives.

4 Policies and Expectations: 1. Participation: Your participation is essential in accomplishing the goals of this course. I expect you to follow the readings and class materials in all class units. Post your response and respond to other students posts in a timely manner as specified in the Online Discussions assignment. 2. Self-Review Questions: There is a list of Questions for Review at the end of each chapter; there are also worksheets I designed for each article from the reading packet. These questions capture the main points of each chapter and of the articles in the reading packet. They serve as self-study-guides for the quizzes. You are responsible for reviewing these questions on your own. They are not graded, but they are fundamental to your success in this course. 3. Policies for Quizzes: There will be no make-up quizzes. Period. Each quiz will be accessible on the time and date specified in the course schedule. You are given 24 hours to do each quiz. The quizzes will not be accessible after 24 hours and no grade will be recorded if you fail to do the quiz within the time limit. 4. Analysis Paper: The paper must be turned in in the dropbox on D2L on the due day specified on the syllabus. No late papers will be accepted. Papers must be typed and double space. You are responsible for saving documents and drafts of your paper. Any excuse with computer breakdown or loss of document for the delay of the paper will not be accepted. 5. Academic Honesty: Plagiarism is the appropriation or presentation of someone else's ideas, language, or designs as your own. You should be aware of the strong sanctions against plagiarism as stated in the current Bulletin and Student Handbook. If proven, a charge of plagiarism could result in an automatic F in the course. Be sure to consult with me if you have any questions about what plagiarism entails or how to acknowledge source materials and the works of others.
