ISBN 13: or ISBN 10: Course Description Welcome to a class that is designed for educators and counselors as they progress toward practitioners. The purpose of this course is to apply psychology to teaching with emphasis on educational research and practical applications related to contemporary issues. An overview of educational psychology focuses on three areas: theory, research, and applications. I am privileged to have the opportunity to share information that will enhance your skills and provide you with background knowledge and resources that can be used throughout your professional career. Objectives Students will demonstrate the ability to generate hypotheses about learning processes and teaching techniques engage in discussion and reflect about educational controversies formulate a personal view or understanding of educational issues support reflections based on research findings research and apply effective teaching strategies conduct literature reviews on empirical educational psychology topics and research acquire information about psychological theory and classroom practice 1

2 Methods and Procedures for Achieving Stated Objectives PowerPoint Lecture Notes Case Studies Textbook Readings On-line Class Discussions and Activities Completion of Study Questions and Exams Research and Completion of Independent Projects Course Policies and Requirements The online certification course will consist of weekly activities in the form of assignments, assessments, discussions, PowerPoints, and lecture notes. - All assignments are due on the date and time specified on the ANGEL Course Calendar and in the various course ANGEL modules/activities. - All students are expected to communicate with the teacher any concerns, technical difficulties, or questions they may have via discussion board, , phone call, or face-to-face appointment. - Students are expected to follow the layout of the on-line course. - Students are expected to have procured the required text prior to the beginning of class. - Students are to submit homework as directed in ANGEL weekly folders - Students are expected to have daily access to: A computer The Internet Evangel ANGEL Learning Management System (LMS) Microsoft Word 2003 or 2007 (available in the Evangel computer labs) Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 or 2007 or Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer Viewer 2003 free download: ANGEL: This course will be conducted exclusively through the ANGEL Learning Management System (LMS). All information needed to access and interact with the course can be found on Evangel University s euniversity Homepage (http://www.evangel.edu/euniversity/index.asp). The Homepage will provide a log in link, information about how to log in, ANGEL computer requirements, Evangel help, and how to use ANGEL. Course Content All course content information (Lessons, PPTs, Assignment Dropboxes, Quizzes, Exams, and Discussion Boards) is located under the Course Content tab within the ANGEL course. Please review the ANGEL Student Quickstart Guide located under Course Content within the ANGEL course or on the Evangel euniversity Homepage (http://www.evangel.edu/euniversity/index.asp) for directions on how to access content, take quizzes, and send s within ANGEL. 2

3 Grade Access All course grades will be recorded and shown through ANGEL. In the ANGEL course, do the following to see student s grades: a. Go to the Report Tab b. In the Category Drop Box, choose Grades c. Click Run. Submitted assignments and grades will be entered into the ANGEL grade book (and graded copies, as needed, returned to students) within 48 hours of the assignment due date. Course Outline, Assignments, and Quizzes The online course is designed so that students can work within flexible schedules. The course is divided into four (4) weekly sessions. Each week has its own corresponding folder listing daily activities; however, students can work as far ahead as they choose as long as assignment due dates are met. Weekly Assignments are located under the Course Content Tab within the ANGEL course. Each week will be listed so that the student can access whichever week is needed. 5 Late Assignments/Missed Deadlines All assignments are due at the dates and times specified. If a student does not turn in an assignment, the student will be deducted full points for that assignment. Even if the student may have enough points to earn an A, the student will not earn an A due to incomplete assignments. Late assignments are not accepted. - Please be proactive in your assignment preparation and admission. - If there are any difficulties in submitting an assignment or if the student experiences technical difficulties, immediately the professor. - If there are difficulties with an assignment, please contact the professor at least 24 hours before the assignment is due. Missed quizzes may be made up at the discretion of the professor. If a student knows that he or she will be unavailable to take a quiz before the due date due to an unusual emergency or situation, please make arrangements for an alternative quiz time. If a quiz is missed, the student has 48 hours to contact the professor for a possible make-up time. Temporary Grade of Incomplete (I) The temporary grade of incomplete (I) will be granted only in cases of extreme hardship. Students may be granted an incomplete grade only when there is evidence of just cause. A student desiring an incomplete must submit a written appeal to the course professor at least two weeks prior to the end of the term. In the appeal, the student must (1) provide a rationale, (2) demonstrate that he/she has been making a sincere effort to complete the assignments during the term, and (3) explain how all the possibilities to complete the assignments on time have been exhausted. Should the course professor agree, an Incomplete Contract will be prepared by the student and signed by both the student and the professor. The Incomplete Contract must contain a description of the work to be completed and a timetable. The completion period should be as short as possible and a completion date cannot extend beyond 30 days from the last day of the term. The Incomplete Contract will accompany the submission of the professor s final grade roster to the program office. The program office will monitor each Incomplete Contract. If a change-of-grade form is not submitted by the scheduled completion date, the grade automatically will be changed from an I to a F. No student may graduate with an I on his or her record. Evaluation Grades will be based on number of points accumulated by completing course requirements. Points accumulated will be divided by the total points available in the class. The instructor retains the right to edit assignments or points to meet objectives of the course. Percentages are not rounded up. Grading will be based on the following: A % C % A % C 73-76% B % C % B 83-86% D % B % D 63-66% D % F 59% and below 5

6 Communications Student : - is the preferred method for contacting the professor. Students should check daily through ANGEL LMS for announcements and communications. If an ANGEL account is needed or there are technical questions, students may contact Evangel s Information Technology HelpDesk: s to the professor should contain the following: The subject line should note reason for message. The body of any should contain proper grammar, punctuation, and complete sentences. Content forums will have interaction directions posted within the forums. The general discussion forum will allow students to ask general course questions. Students are expected to assist with general course questions posted by classmates. - Phone and Face-to-Face Meetings: Phone conversations and face-to-face meetings may be pre-arranged by appointment. Please contact the professor for available times. - Course Announcements: Daily and weekly course announcements will be posted on the course ANGEL Homepage, so please check them daily. Professor s Responsibilities - s: All student s will be answered within 24 hours of receipt during the regular business week and 72 hours during weekends. The professor will not answer s between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. - Discussions: The professor will interact with student postings and will respond within 24 hours of initial posts during the regular business week and 72 hours during weekends. - Online Office Hours: The professor will be available during the posted online office hours. If not, a message will be posted as to rescheduled office hours via the Course Announcements in ANGEL. - Phone and Face-to-face Meetings: Phone conversations will be through Evangel office phones; however, if unable to reach professor by office phone, do not leave a message without trying the professor s cell phone and voice mail. Face-to-face meetings can be arranged on campus. Please call or for arrangements. - Course Announcements: Any change in the course schedule or assignments will be posted in the announcement section of the ANGEL Course omepage at least 12 hours in advance. APA Style, Plagiarism, and Academic Dishonesty Written assignments are graded on grammar, spelling, and APA format. Students are challenged to incorporate new information into subsequent assignments. Plagiarism is not tolerated and is easily avoided by giving credit to original authors. Plagiarism or cheating erodes the integrity of a person and may result in failing grades for an assignment, exam, or course.
