13 PEER MENTORING IN NURSING EDUCATION: A TURKISH EXPERIENCE By Suheyla Abaan Sergul Duygulu Seher Basaran Oznur Ispir Hacettepe University Faculty of Nursing, Ankara, Turkey. Abstract Background: Multiple studies have shown the value of peer mentoring in nursing education. Nursing Faculty is under pressure by the increasing number of students, rising competency requirements, understaffing, budget cuts, limited clinical placement opportunities, and observing patient and student rights therefore the need for alternative solutions for competency development is tremendous then ever in many countries as well as in Turkey Aim: The aim of this paper is to share our experience on peer mentoring of nursing students for newly admitted peers to one Turkish University Bachelorate nursing program. Methods: In Fall Term 68 senior nursing students who randomly assigned as mentors to 136 beginning nursing students (mentees) listed in University registrar were included in this descriptive study. Mentors were enrolled in Education in Nursing course with mentorship practicum. During the mentorship practicum, the mentee s knowledge, skills and attitudes towards being a nursing professional were assessed by the seniors; a process aimed at developing professional autonomy as well as helping the mentees in transition to university life. During the term, small group seminars were held every three weeks with the faculty. Mentors prepared reflective dairy handed in to faculty before the sessions and self assessment forms at the end of the term. The mentee was invited to these sessions. Faculty supervised and gave support to the mentors during this session as well as whenever they needed. Results: Orientation process to a new environment, responsibilities, issues such as accommodation, obtaining financial resources; examining the values, beliefs and attitudes toward nursing, examination of learning styles, study habits, problem solving- decision making ability, stress reduction, motivation, setting personal and professional goals for future and as well as personal needs of mentees were studied during three month period (one term) and empowerment strategies were used for both mentors and mentees. Most of mentors stated in their self assessment reports that the peer mentoring experience developed them individually as a nursing student. In their role, peer mentors developed an increase in confidence with skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, and communication skills as well as with leadership and teaching abilities. The process also allowed mentees to grow and mature in coping skills and to be internally locus of controlled. Conclusion: This experience opened up many learning opportunities for both mentees and mentors, and could be used in a nursing curriculum as a part of practicum. 13
