3 General Session PresentATIONS Tuesday, October 10, 2006 Preventing Mental Illness by Getting Help Early By getting help early, a person s chances greatly improve for staying in school, working, maintaining friendships and planning for the future. The PIER Program provides education, treatment for young people and their families and conducts research about the effects of early identification in stemming the progression to mental illness. Donna Downing, MS, OTR/L is a Program Clinical Team Leader for the Maine Medical Center s Portland Identification and Early Referral Project (PIER) which provides confidential assessment and early assistance for young people between the ages of 12 and 35 who are at risk for mental illnesses. Providing Mental Health Care for the Elderly in Rural Settings: Challenges and Innovative Solutions This presentation will discuss the prevalence of mental health problems in the elderly with a focus on depression and dementia and the challenges in detection and treatment of mental health problems that are unique to rural settings. Dr. Turvey will present innovative treatment strategies. Carolyn Turvey, MD is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa. She is a clinical psychologist and her specialty is geriatric depression with an emphasis on depression in chronic illness. She is currently the Principle Investigator on two grants studying the treatment of depression in home bound elders. Dr. Turvey also studies suicide in late-life and suicidal behavior in rural populations. Wednesday, October 11, 2006 Trauma Through the Eyes of a Child: How to Understand and Help Traumatized Children Children are traumatized by violence and trauma as victims and witnesses. When children are traumatized, they will show behavioral, emotional, social, and cognitive effects. They depend on parents, caregivers, and trusted adults to keep them safe. The presentation will discuss the effects of trauma on children and issues of prevention and intervention. Joy D. Osofsky, Ph.D. is a psychologist and psychoanalyst and Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She is Head of the Division of Pediatric Mental Health. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the University of New Orleans. Dr. Osofsky is Director of the Violence Intervention Program for Children and Families and the Harris Center for Infant Mental Health at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. In 2004, Dr. Osofsky published an edited book, Young Children and Trauma: Intervention and Treatment. Rethinking Mental Illness: The Power of Procovery What if, instead of reaching backward to recover in the traditional sense, to a prior state of health, individuals with psychiatric diagnoses reached forward to procover, to focus on life instead of illness, to build new dreams and find new purpose? What if those who support and treat these individuals were able to easily create and support this change? Kathleen Crowley, author of The Power of Procovery in Healing Mental Illness: Just Start Anywhere and creator of the Procovery Model, shows how this fundamental change of direction can take place to initiate a transformative cycle of healing. Kathleen Crowley is Executive Director and cofounder of the Procovery Institute ( com), a former member of the Wisconsin Blue Ribbon Commission on Mental Health, and speaks, writes, and consults nationally on the principles, strategies and implementation of procovery, defined as attaining a productive and fulfilling life regardless of the level of health assumed attainable. She is a writer and author of The Power of Procovery in Healing Mental Illness: Just Start Anywhere and The Day Room, A Memoir of Madness and Mending. How Far Iowa has Come How Far to Go? Dr. Davis will present a report card that identifies and builds on the challenges presented from the prior year s conference. Iowa s Road to Recovery will be explored in the context of mid-decade efforts and policies that are taking place at the national/federal level. The audience will be used to help establish the work-plan for the next year of activities that addresses recovery. King Davis PhD is Executive Director of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health and the Robert Lee Sutherland Chair in Mental Health and Social Policy in the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. King was a professor of Public Mental Health Policy and Planning at the Virginia Commonwealth University and holder of the William and Camille Cosby Chair at Howard University, Washington D.C.
