step 1 Unpack the lunchbox And check whether you have got all the components~ If you have questions please contact us at: info@unitunlikely.com This part is called the PCB (printed circuit board). All the component will be soldered onto this board. The PCB has internal copper wires to connect all the components so we do not have to worry about that. Convienent~ The way it is shown on the picture is the top side.
step 2 read this to learn the basics of soldering. Bend the legs if required to fit them into the PCB Push the legs (metal pins) of the component through holes of the PCB. The locations are indicated in the manual. The component should always be visible on the printed side of the PCB (the side with the logo, as indicated on the picture). Flip the PCB and briefly heat up a leg of a component. This takes about 2 seconds.
step 3 read this to learn the basics of soldering. Add solder tin to the leg. If the leg of the component is hot enough, the tin will automatically flow onto the metal ring, fastening the leg of the component to the board. Always make sure to solder all the legs of a component. Cut of excess material of the legs. If you are done it should look something like this. The legs of the components should never touch when you are done soldering. This will cause a short-circuit and will ruin your components.
step 4 R1K Resistor - 5x It does not matter in which direction you solder the resistors. Components that have this feature are called non-polarized. The resistors have color codes to indicate their resistance. Super convenient! Find the 5 resistors with the color code Brown-Black- Red-Gold and solder them on locations R1, R4, R5, R6 and R7. These places are also indicated with R1K, which stands for Resistance 1 Kilo Ohm.
step 5 R10K Resistor - 2x Find the 2 resistors with the color code Brown-Black- Orange-Gold and solder them on locations R3 and R2. These places are also indicated with R10K.
step 6 1N4004 Diode - 1x The diode is a component that functions like a oneway-street. It lets current go one way, but not the other and will protect the more sensitive components of the Lunchbox if you connect the battery on the wrong way. The diode is a polarized component. This means that the direction it is soldered matters. Make sure to check you solder it as indicated on the PCB. The grey band indicates the negative side of the diode. Its solder location is indicated with D1.
step 7 IC sockets 14 pin socket 1x 8 pin socket 1x The Sockets are small outlets for heat sensitive electronics. Please make sure that you only fill the sockets when it is mentioned in the manual to do so. With each component you solder you heat up the PCB and consequently heat up the electronics if you already plugged them into the sockets. Solder the Sockets on the places indicated by IC1 and IC2. Mind the visual indication on the PCB and try to match it with the sockets. In case you didn t, don t worry it is more a convention in electronics than a crucial thing to safegaurd the Lunchbox from working.
step 8 C100nF capacitor - 2x The Capacitor C100nF is non-polarized. It does not matter in which direction you solder it. You can recognize these capacitros by their curved legs. Solder them on location C3 and C2 right next to the Unit Unlikely logo (left side).
step 9 C10nf capacitor 1x The Capacitor C10nF is non-polarized. It does not matter in which direction you solder it. Note in difference to C100NF the C10NF has a dimple on top. Solder it on location C1.
step 10 LED Light emitting diode - 1x A LED is a component that lights up when power goes through it. A LED is polarized where, if you look closely, has one flat side which indicates the negative side (-). Match the flat side of the LED to the flat side of the print on the PCB. Another tip: The long leg within electronics often indicates the positive side (+). Solder the LED on the location LED1.
step 11 LDR Light dependent resistor 1x The LDR is a resistor that varies in resistance when it catches light. The LDR is non-polarized so it can be soldered in either direction. The LDR measures the frequency in which the LED blinks and on the basis thereof switches the sound on and off to create the tremolo effect. Solder it on the location indicated with LDR. Please make sure that you do not solder the LDR to tight on the PCB but make sure that a small part of its legs still stick out so that you can eventually bend it in the direction of the LED.
step 12 POT 1M Potentiometer 1M - 3x A potentiometer is a variable resistor that can be operated by turning its knob (knob will be inserted later). Note that you have four similar looking components, however only 3 are 1M, the other one is 100K. The values are recognizable by the white print on the top. Solder the 1M potentiometer on the location R1- PITCH, R2-VCO and R3-TRML. values are described on the top of the potentiometer.
step 13 POT 100K Potentiometer 100k - 1x Solder the 100k potentiometer on the location R4- VOL.
step 14 vcc and gnd battery clip - 1x Solder the Battery Clip s red wire to the VCC and the black wire to the GND. The battery that matches this connection is a 9V.
step 15 HEADPHONE (connector) Headphone 3.5mm jack connector - 1x First make sure that there is no ring on the connector. This ring will come in handy later on, but for now it is just in the way. Solder the headphone connector onto the location marked with HEADPHONE. Now give the PCB some time to cool down! The following components are sensetive to heat. A PCB stays hot a short while after you soldered a component. This excesive heat can damage the components in the next steps. Just take it slowly from here on and you ll be fine~.
step 16 C1uf elco capacitor - 1x The negative side of the capacitor is distinguished by the grey stripe that has been printed on the side of its casing. Another tip: make sure that the longer leg of the component goes in the hole marked with a plus. Note that you have two similar looking capacitors look on the writings on the side for the right one. It is crucial that you solder this components on correctly in order for the circuit to work. Give the component time to cool down before progressing to the next step. Solder the capacitor on the location marked with C4.
step 17 C22uf elco capacitor - 1x It is crucial that you solder this components on correctly in order for the circuit to work. Give the component time to cool down before progressing to the next step. Solder the capacitor on the location marked with C5.
step 18 NE556N DUAL timer ic - 1x Put the NE556N IC in the socket marked IC1. Make sure that the small gap of the NE556N IC is on the left side and matches the gap of the drawing on the PCB. Tip: if the legs are too wide, gently bend them inwards before pushing it in its socket.
step 19 NE555N TIMER IC - 4x Put the NE555N IC in the socket marked IC2. Make sure that the small gap of the NE555N IC is on the left side and matches the drawing on the PCB.
step 20 Potentiometer knobs knobs - 4x Click the knobs into the potentiometer. Push till they make a clicking sound and they are nice and secure.
step 21 Admire for 20 seconds (optional, but deserved) Wow, look at that musical instrument you just soldered. Maybe even try it out real quick before reading on. Now put your Lunchbox in its casing. Push the little rounds out of the cardboard, now the knobs of the potentiometers can stick through and there is a hole for your headphone cable. Also put the little ring on the jack connector and tighten it, so that the synthesizer is nicely secured in its box. Awesome~
step 22 This is how it works The circuit of the Lunchbox can be roughly divided into two parts. One part that generates the sound and the other part that adjusts the volume. sound generation bpm and volume The Lunchbox has two IC s. The bigger one is actually two smaller ones in a single casing. + = These IC s are capable of turning an internal switch on and off. This creates a square wave. If we make the speed at which the IC s create these square waves high enough, we create sound waves.
step 23 This is how it works Want to continue exploring electronics? Or came up with some nice hacks? We added a prototype board to the Lunchbox (the white bottom right corner) where you can conveniently solder additional components. i love you A cool thing about the Lunchbox is the LDR and LED combination. The LDR is a resistor of which the resistance is based on the intensity of light it sees. By turning on and off a LED we can create a nice sounding tremolo effect. The coolest part is that the LDR also responses to external light. So opening the cardboard box will influence your synthesizers behavior.
