4 WHAT WE DO Learning through simulation The sky was darkening, the wind and rain growing much stronger and the crew were feeling anxious as the situation became much more severe. A flight manual was shaken violently and fell to the floor with a terrible thud- but nobody was brave enough to loosen their grip on the controls to even think about picking it up. The crew knew that the decisions that they had to make in the next few minutes would bring safety or disaster to everybody on board. The pressure was on! Luckily, this was a training exercise-although it felt real enough for the crew to raise their blood pressure - it was carried out in a flight simulator. The flight simulator has proven to be the most effective method of developing the capability of pilots without risking human or commercial disaster. Companies can develop the business capability of their key managers and executives using business simulations which do for them what flight simulators do for airlines - enable them to develop capabilities to a high degree. Participants will be totally immersed in running a business with all the opportunities, challenges, unforeseen issues, market shifts, financial constraints that make up the reality of running a real business. They are challenged to discover how they can improve their decision-making, communication, leadership and team working all in a completely safe environment. Every day business is seldom conducive to full learning, since delays and the complexity of a company's work tend to obscure the link between decisions and their consequences. Under normal conditions, managers are rarely able to see the full effect of their actions. Simulations however can compress the timeline, and learners can experiment with different strategies and techniques and see the consequences of those in the very next round. Benefits of training with simulations: w Simulations are experiential, and they provide a safe environment to test 'what-if' scenarios without making costly mistakes while still seeing the consequences of decisions w The lessons are indelibly printed on the learner's mind because the training is dynamic, interactive and emotionally engaging w The context and content are relevant, realistic and directly applicable to the job w w Simulations shorten training time, as a few days of simulation can replace weeks of classroom activity Simulations allows for theory application, and can integrate different functional areas Facilitation The simulations can be facilitated by our trainers or we can conduct train the trainer sessions for a company's own team. 8 Commercial Awareness & Business Acumen We train managers on commercial awareness and business acumen using advanced business simulations. Managers are immersed in a realistic commercial scenario where they are able to learn about business & finance through a 'hands-on' and ' learning by doing' approach. They are placed in a commercial situation where they learn about the key concepts and factors that affect a commercial outcome. They will see with their own eyes how various commercial decisions have an impact on the business, it's results, staff and customers - which in turn can have an effect on turnover. They will learn the importance of making sound commercial decisions and how to become more aware of the impact they have across the business. 9 Building a high-performing team Team building simulations are a great way of encouraging a team to find effective ways of working together and building a great team spirit. Each team will face the challenge of setting up and running a virtual business and then compete in the same market as their peers. Learning Content Developing a high performing business team Managing and leading a business unit Driving business results and productivity Responding to the competitive environment Roles, Responsibility and Accountability The effect of teamwork and leadership on business results The teams will work through the stages of building a high performing team whilst learning about developing and managing a profitable business unit. Using a business simulation helps participants understand why team work is important within an organization,and also helps them to see how it also drives real business results when it is working well. 10 OUR APPROACH The four pillars of our training methodology ensure that we can guarantee a return on your training investment. 1 Assessments: We deploy a range of validated psychometric instruments to assess personality preferences and competency gaps prior to commencing management development or team building interventions.these enable us to focus exercises on specific areas of need and track each participant's learning progression in the identified areas. 2 Experiential learning: Change does not come readily to adults. Lectures, training modules and workshops may lay bare the mechanics of organizational change, but they are unlikely to revolutionize people's work practices. Most of the time, we learn only through experience. As simulations replicate a typical organization, the scenario is as close as possible to reality, and the experience gained during the training can easily be transferred to the participant's real life work situation, in the same way as a pilot's initial and ongoing training is facilitated through the use of flight simulators. 3 4 Field & Forum: This approach enables participants to apply learning to their workplace situation in phased progression. Learning content is delivered in segments, and spaced at two to four week intervals so participants can apply the outcomes of each training segment (forum) to their work. This reinforces the learning and enables them gain deeper insight and practice new skills. Typically, a full scope management development programme is delivered over a three month period. Reflective Journal: Reflection helps to bridge the theory - practice gap. To ensure participants retain knowledge and apply their learning, we encourage them to keep individual reflective journals through out the duration of the training programme. They are able to analyze their performance as learners, evaluate gains in understanding and make connections with other experiences or ideas. As it is written over a period of time, a journal shows development of learning over time. L&D SOLUTIONS FOR BUSINESSES 9
11 Pre-work Individualized competency assessment and gap analysis on each participant. Field and forum Classroom training is spread over a series of learning forums and fieldwork is assigned in between the learning forums. Classroom sessions are spaced at a minimum of three-week intervals and fieldwork assignments link directly to the day jobs of participants Reflective Journal Pre-work Forum 1 Fieldwork Forum 2 Fieldwork Review Application of Learning in the work place Engagement The learning process is enhanced by our adoption of business simulations to deliver training and the use of reflective journals to track development over time. 13 MANAGEMENT TEAM To p e l e a d s A c c e l e r a t e d Learning Systems. With prior b a c k g r o u n d i n b u s i n e s s development, he has been working in learning and development for more than a decade. Tope Toogun Tope holds an MA in Management Learning & Leadership from the University of Lancaster in the UK and he is also an alumnus of the University of Stellenbosch Business School in South Africa. He sits on the boards of several organizations in Nigeria and South Africa and he is a member of the Governing Body of two international schools in Lagos, Nigeria. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and the Institute of Consulting in the United Kingdom. Kemi is the Executive Director, Administration at Accelerated Learning Systems Limited. Kemi started her career in banking and accounting, from which she took a break for several years, to raise her young children. She joined the team at Accelerated Learning Kemi Toogun Systems Limited in 2006 and has been responsible for several portfolios within the company since then. Kemi holds an HND in Accountancy from the Yaba College of Technology, and the ACCA professional diploma in Accounting and Business. She is currently enrolled on the certificate in entrepreneurial management course at the Enterprise Development Centre of the Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos. L&D SOLUTIONS FOR BUSINESSES 12
14 Aisha Idahosa Aisha is the Head of Business Development at Accelerated L e a r n i n g S y s t e m s L t d. Previously, she has worked in various capacities as a m a r k e t i n g m a n a g e r a n d customer service ambassador at Zenith Bank Plc. Aisha holds a B.Sc. in Geography and Regional Planning, M.Sc. Human Resources Management from the University of Bedfordshire and Ontario Postgraduate degree in Human Resources from Humber College, Canada. She also holds a TESOL certificate from University of Cambridge and a Certificate in Teaching for Understanding from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and is an associate member of CIPD, UK.Aisha started reading at the age of two and has not stopped since then. She is married with children. Segun Shogbanmu Segun is the Head of Learning Management & Execution at Accelerated Learning Systems Limited. Segun is a graduate of English Language from the Lagos State University, and he holds an MBA from the Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University. He is currently a doctoral student in Management at PAU. He has worked on several projects and has trained over 1,000 professionals including entrepreneurs in the areas of strategic thinking, competitive strategy and value innovation, selling skills, business problem analysis and decision making, and accelerated learning techniques.
