How to install phpbb forum on NTU student club web server This guide contains the step by step instructions to install phpbb (stable release 3.0.7- PL1) on NTU student club web server. It does not cover contents on how to manage or operate the phpbb forum. Requirements: - Access to your club web folder - Club database name, database username, database password If you do not have the above information or access, contact CITS helpdesk (helpdesk@ntu.edu.sg) 1. To begin, download the software from http://www.phpbb.com/downloads/ and extract the phpbb3 folder to your desktop.
2. Copy the phpbb3 folder into your club s web folder (Eg. \\webx\club1) on webx server. 3. The name of the folder determines the URL of your forum. For example, if you wish the URL of your forum to be http://clubs.ntu.edu.sg/club1/forum, rename the phpbb3 folder to forum.
4. You will not be able to proceed further as some directory permissions need to be configured by NTU CITS administrator. Send an email to helpdesk@ntu.edu.sg to inform them of the location of your phpbb folder and request for the permission configuration. 5. After you have gotten a reply from Helpdesk that your request has been completed, you are ready to continue with the installation. Open your web browser and go to http://clubs.ntu.edu.sg/club1/forum. Click on the Install tab
6. Click Proceed to next step. On the requirements screen, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on start install. 7. Enter database information as follow on the database settings page: a. Database server: localhost b. Database name: <Your club s database name> c. Database username: <Your club s database username> d. Database password: <Your club s database password>
Click Proceed to next step.
8. The database connection test should show success. Click Proceed to next step. 9. On the Administrator s detail page, enter your administrator username, password and contact email address. Click Proceed to next step. Note that you will have to use a NTU email address that ends with either @ntu.edu.sg, @e.ntu.edu.sg or @pmail.ntu.edu.sg. This will be the email address that your forum user will see when a mail is sent from the forum administrator. 10. The next page should show Tests passed. Click Proceed to next step.
11. Click Download and save a copy of the configuration file config.php to your desktop.
12. Copy this config.php into the forum web folder and overwrite the existing file. 13. Go back to your web browser and click Done.
14. Click Proceed to next step. 15. Click Proceed to next step on the next 2 pages Advanced settings and Create database tables. No entry is required. This might take a little while.
16. If everything works well, your installation is successful. Click Login to login to your forum
17. You are now at the Administration Console Panel. The next few steps are recommended settings for the forum. Click on Board settings.
18. Enter a name and description for your forum and change the timezone to UTC+8. Click Submit.
19. Click on User registration settings. On this page, the following changes are recommended. a. Account activation: By Admin b. Password length: Minimum 8 c. Password complexity: Must contain letters and numbers d. Force password change: 180 Days Click Submit at the bottom of the page.
20. Click on Security settings. Click No under Allow persistent logins. Click Submit at the bottom of the page.
21. Click on Search settings and modify the User and Guest search flood interval to 5 seconds. Click Submit at the bottom of the page.
22. You are done with the setup. Now delete the Installation directory on your forum web folder.
23. Click on the Forum tab. You can now setup and manage your forum as required. This is not covered under the scope of this installation guide. 24.
